Hi group!!
I'm new to the group and thought it would be nice to introduce myself to everyone. I'm a 26 y/o female from the Atlanta, Ga area. I was diagnosed with a condition called Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) November 2007. It's a horrid condition which contributes to obesity, infertility, hirsutism (male pattern hair grown... eww!), insulin resistance, etc. It's nothing glorious.
I began considering RNY-gastric bypass- about a year ago. I finally jumped on board after I saw the results my cousin had experienced! I finally began researching and had narrowed my surgeons down to 2. I attempted to make an appointment for the first surgeon's seminar only to find that after 2 hours of attempting to contact his office, I STILL had not talked to a person nor was I successful in getting at least to a call tree. I felt in my heart that the second surgeon was right for me all along. So I called the second surgeon and after half of a ring and 1 option in a call tree, I was booked for his seminar! That easily and quick. (After hours I called his office just to see how prompt the after hours service was. I heard maybe 2 rings and an operator answered!)
So I continued on my path to WLS, looking through the good and the bad. Watching YouTube clips, TLC specials, reading literature, etc. and finally went to the seminar. Dr. Steinberg not only talked about the wonderful benefits from this surgery, he made sure to drill into us the risks associated with surgery. After the seminar, I continued to pursue educating myself about the pros and cons of the surgery and made my appointment to meet with him.
As I spoke with him and informed him about my PCOS, he informed me that I was an ideal candidate and he also informed me of a few of his other patients who became preggers post-op! He is so down to earth and VERY easy to talk to.
I received my packet including my checklist which had to be completed with the prior authorizations and clearances. The first appt I made was for the Pulmonary clearance. I remember being SOOOOO upset because it was a month and a half out. After about a week of complaining (PCOS moment), I sucked it up and realized I could use that timeline to my advantage by setting up my other appointments in the mean time. I tell you that time passed with a BREEZE! I saw my psychologist, my PCP, the nutritionist and finally the pulmonologist. I submitted my information to the surgeon's office about 2 or 3 days before I went on vacation with my BFF and began praying like there was no tomorrow!
We went on last Sunday and I had NOT thought about the application at all. On Tuesday, May 12th, I woke up that morning and ate breakfast. The thought of getting home the following week so I could wait for my approval ran across my mind, but I quickly brushed it off; not wanting to rush my vacay. So I sit on my bed and I hear my cell phone ring. I screened the call and I saw it was DeKalb Medical. I figured it was the nutritionist calling to inform me I had another payment to make. So I answered and much to my surprise it was Dr. Steinberg's coordinator informing me I had been approved!!!!
I've scheduled both of my pre-op visits for the same day I meet with Dr. S for the last time before surgery! I'm so excited and I can't wait to finally have the "TOOL" I desperately need for weight loss! I'll definitely annoy everyone with questions and I'll also keep you all posted with before and after pics!
I'm sorry, there I go rambling again! Thanks for listening! (if you did!)

I'm so excited for you but you didn't say when your schedule was. I have mine tomorrow May 26th, I've waited about 3 months, but it felt like three years! Ok so I'm exaggerating a little. Good luck and I will keep you posted. Sara

I am so glad things are working out. I too had pcos. I am six months out and down 108. I had the laproscopic gastric bypass and I don't regret it for one moment. I hope that one day I will be able to have babies. But that is up to the man upstairs in the end. Good luck!!!!!

Welcome Loreal! I have PCOS, too, which resulted in my losing an ovary to Endometriosis when I was 26 and ultimately my uterus to numerous fibroid tumors (at 38) after years of being tormented by my body (non-stop periods for YEARS). The majority of my symptoms have abated since my hysterectomy, altho I still have insulin resistance (which I believe has been extended by my WLS). Things can get better, as I hope they will for you. You sound like someone who has educated themselves about their situation and taken action. I predict a healthier life for you and wish you all the best.

2a. Questions from a post op =)

Hi Jennifer,
Congratulations on thinking about what food is good for your post-op body.
As to doing high quality foods on a budget, a few things to remember: we eat alot less now than before, so we can buy very small quantities of very high quality.
Another option is to go for less expensive forms of protein. Eggs come to mind as one form. Another thing to do is to buy lesser cuts of meat (for example 7 bone-in chuck steak) and cook in stews and soups. You get the same protein, but at a greatly reduced price. Buying in bulk also can save money, and you can freeze things in individual packets for your use later.
With regard to protein drinks -- you could try the Jay Robb protein mixes. They are based on egg white so they have no whey or lactose in them. Easy to digest. I think they taste fine with water. But if you think it's too thin with water, consider putting it in a blender with some water, some ice, and a half a banana (and even some peanut butter if you like that). It will make it thick and rich without the milk or the expense of soy milk.
Best of luck!
Julie

My surgeon recommends the Bariatric Advantage vitamins. I take two of the multi-vitamins, three calcium citrate, one iron, and one B-12 sublingual. You just have to remember to not take the iron too close to taking any calcium. My daily regimen is one multi-vitamin and one calcium citrate in the a.m.; one calcium citrate and the B-12 at lunch; one calcium citrate and one multi vitamin in the late afternoon/early evening; and one iron at bedtime. Hope all goes will with your surgery!!!

> Hi, Sara. I have lap rny on April 3, so I am one month post-op. I can tell you that I already feel this is one of the best things I have ever done for myself!!! I have lost 26 pounds since surgery, and have had no complications. The best advice I can give you is to do all the research you can prior to surgery. I am fortunate to have a friend who had the procedure about 9 months earlier - she has been a blessing to me. Just plan to follow your surgeon's instructions - as you will find they all differ somewhat in what they recommend. I had to do a clear liquid diet the day prior to surgery and take something to "clean me out". After surgery I was on full liquid diet until I was released from the hospital. After that I could go slowly with "pureed" foods for at least two weeks. After the second week my surgeon advises slowly introducing regular foods as tolerated. I have had no significant problems. A couple of times I have eaten a little too fast and that caused me some minor discomfort, but like I said, nothing major and I would certainly do this all over again. Feel free to e-mail me with any specific questions you might have. Good luck!!! Renee
