Wow, VIC, that is exactly what I have been waiting to hear. You listed
everything that I wondered about. So thank you for answering that in a wise way.
With your years of experience, PLEASE share more often on the ways to use
the tool to the best of our abilities. Many of us do not know the ability of
the tool. My tool may be a little larger than it should or maybe its my body
just still hangs onto fat because it is still high in fat. There are
factors that hold the tool back from being optimal. I almost think that the tool
will maybe even work more efficiently once a major portion of the fat is gone
and more muscle is around our bones.
Such as:
I just may be excersize too much. Three hours out on the bike last night
may be doing me in and not helping? Eating too little may kick my body into
starvation mode making it hold onto every fat cell. And also, my body is NOT
loosing anything in 15 days now?
These are factors that I have not figured out yet. It seems that I was
loosing MORE when I just sat there and ate protein powder and did not move
because of the pains of surgery.
So I dont know. I give up.
If you have any insights to these, ~~ let me know ~~
Peace, Lee
Shawna:
I had RNY in 1999. You sound right on target to me. You probably had an
initially large weight loss, like 20 pounds the first month, then several
pounds a week. Sounds correct to me.
Please don't put energy into wondering if you will 'have a higher rate of
putting it on fast'. At this early stage, you will be losing and not leveling
off for a long time.
You also don't have to exercise daily, in my experience. 3 times a week
keeps my weight maintained with watchfulness of my caloric and carbohydrate
intake. If I want to lose weight, I cut back on those items and increase my
exercise times (like go from 20 minutes to 30 on the treadmill and add another
day's session).
Relax. You now have a tool that will make losing weight SO MUCH EASIER than
it ever was before for you. Your weight will fluctuate a lot less with even
the lightest amount of vigilance. But you must always be mindful, and not
sit back, eat anything you please and not exercise. THAT is the way to gain.
As long as you have some minimal exercise and keep your meals
protein-centered and your diet moderate in calories and carbs, you will achieve weight
maintenance.
If you keep doing what you are doing now, you will continue to lose over
time. You might focus on a goal time that is a year from your surgery date.
That's about when your body will have settled down and gotten very used to
your surgical change. That's when you should review your exercise and diet
habits to ensure you know what your body needs to maintain.
Negligence, ignoring what you have learned about exercising and diet, will
lead to weight gain. It's a simple matter of 'physics', it's not a 'mystery'
any more.
Regarding your protein question, you might try some protein bars or
commercially made protein drinks. I like the Worldwide Nutrition Protein Plus bars.
Read bar labels carefully, watch for calories, fat and carbs in the bars
you select, and of course, protein content.
Soon enough you'll be eating more solid foods for protein. In the
meanwhile, you can always puree things in the blender. My favorite treat back in the
early days was hummus, I'd eat it with lettuce leaves.

This sounds like a IRON problem. You can get liquid iron from the doctor on
top of the vitmans w/ iron in them for an extra boost and also B12 problem,
possibly together. I know that I had this in the beginning and they gave me
a B12 boost with a shot and I was better. I also had low blood pressure
from continualing to take the blood pressure pills while loosing rapidly and it
brought my pressure down to 90/60 and I could not move.
So, take iron, B12 and dont take blood pressure pills (check with doctor)

I current have these same frustrations, Kelly. I dont know why some
surgeons do a great job on some and a looser job on others. Also, I think that
women just have a harder time maybe. I am planning and thinking of going back on
the protein powder just because my brother in law took the protein powder
for one year until he came down 250 lbs. He warned me that that was the only
thing that worked for him in loosing the weight for him. Seems like it may
be my only way too.
But I had the lactose problem after month one and had to go prematurely on
regular foods and that has been not a good thing for my once little pouch.
What should be 2 oz is more like 6 oz now, maybe?
So now that the wonderful people here have HELPED me with LI and what to
get and do about it, I can now assuredly go to the store and restart my
process all over again and I will report back with the results.
Would you like to do this together? Start the protein powders again and
keep with it till we loose all the weight and see where that goes? I will be
doing this on July 1, 2009. I want to realign myself with the surgery and
begin again. Let me know because I am determined.
Peace, Lee
Ugh! I know your frustrations. I was 311 at surgery and got down to 194 and
am currently back up to 208.5 lbs. I am only 15 months post-op on July 9th.
I quit smoking on April 1st (3 months ago) and I truely believe this is
what caused my 15 lb weight gain. I am so frustrated and irritated and upset
over it. Im suppose to be going down in weight, not up. Ugh! The further you
are out the harder it is to maintain.
I too am interested on how to get back on the saddle, how to kick back my
weight loss and get back on the right track. I was thinking of starting
weight watchers also but didnt feel it was fair to anyone there. But I too
deserve to be able to keep track of things for myself too right?

The more I read from this group the more questions I have. I am 1 month
out. I am so tired that sometimes I can't lift my hands over my head. I do
go for walks but come dragging after a short time. The hospital I go to
does not start vitamins until 3 months out so I am taking no vitamins at
this time. The GI/nutrition team also started to play with medications they
no nothing about (like trying to stop my insulin and some other medications.
I hate feeling like this. I do understand that I am heading for 60 and
had to take 2 trips to the OR but I don't think I should be feeling this
weak this far out.
Also thank you to the person that said they eat the Ezekiel bread.
This was taken away from me about 1.5 years ago due to Gastroperasis and I
look forward to getting it again.

Oh Judy, sorry you are feeling so down. That's not good though.
I can not believe that your doctor does not have you on vitamins already.
When I came home from the hospital, i was at least taking a flinstones chewable vitamin, a chewable daily vitamin.
I think i started swallowing pills around a month... moved to:
2 Woman's Daily
2 Calcium Citrate
1 B12 Sublingual
2 Vit C (chewable)
1 Magnesium
1 Vitamin D3
1 Prilosec OTC
1 Vit B Complex
9 Iron pills
1 copper
per day.
I know that when I start to get weak, tired and feeling Blah, i either up my iron or i add another B12. I was told that you can not overdose on the B12 sublingual because it comes out in your pee.
Im not an expert but you learn to read your own body after a while
I personally think you should be taking something.
Your body needs it, you would feel 100 percent better
Does anyone else that is MORE experienced feel the same?

Hey everyone...
I'm just writing to get some information for post-op difficulties. I'm having RNY July 7th in Atlanta and I'm definitely wondering what will be some difficult experiences. Things such as sleeping (I'm a stomach sleeper), going up and down stairs, I work in an office where all I do is sit and I'm going back to work after 2 weeks so should I be fine for 8 hrs, etc. Any thoughts and ideas are totally welcome! =)

I don't think you can go by my experience due to being almost 60, and
having to have a second procedure to remove a blockage from a twisted loop of
bowel. The surgeon also spend 2 hours taking down adhesions so I am not
"typical". I just wanted to wish you luck.

Subject: [After Weight Loss Surgery] After Surgery...

If you are comfortable to sleep on your belly, then do it! You may be ok. You're not gonna tare anything, just might be difficult to get up after. Never know

LOL! I've heard it gets easier to sleep on your tummy after about a month. I don't know how I'm going to make it.

Everyone is different.
I really didnt have any post-op difficulties besides a little soreness.
I work in an office also and was ready to go back to work the next
day although they wouldnt let me due to my drain tube and working
around tons of dirt/coal dust. I am a stomach sleeper and trust me
you will learn to sleep another way fast lol it;ll be sore....
Best of luck on your surgery! keep us posted!!!!

Hi All,I'm 8 weeks post and I am very fatigued. I'm taking my vitamins/iron-exercising. When I eat, I feel a tightness around my stomach (below my bra). I make sure I do not overeat, no fat, sugars no excess calories. However, I don't think I'm losing what I should be. To date, I have lost 30 lbs. Should I be satisfied with this? I know everyone is different, but should I be eating more? Any feed-back would be appreciated. Thanks!
