His drinking. He is drinking more and then we start fighting and he throws in my face that I have had a lifestyle change and just because I did and because I am PERFECT (which I am not by far) doesn't mean he is. He supported me through it all until recently and things are getting worse and worse. I have a sister who is an alcholic and has been for over 20 years and I am not going to live through all of that again. He knows how I feel about my sister and about drinking - but he doesn't seem to care anymore. Oh sure there used to be a whole lot of "I'm sorries" at the begginning - and now there is not. He throws it in my face that at least he is at home drinking - that he could be like all the other men in the world and be out at bars with who knows who doing who knows what. Just breaks my heart because I truly love him. I do not love who he becomes when he comes home from work and starts drinking.
And the more he drinks - the more I say things about it - and that seems to give him "an excuse" to drink more.

Thanks for the response Vic and Janet. I don't believe it's that bad yet and she isn't ignoring me or anything like that. She just wants to go all the time when she was the one in the past that was like why don't we ever just stay home some time.
Where we live they have free poker tournaments just about every night at different bars one game at 7 and one game at 10. If I would let her she would go to everyone of them. The game at 10 doesn't get over till sometimes 1 in the morning. She is also drinking a lot more than she ever has and that is really concerning to me.
I feel as though if I keep nagging her she is not going to stay around forever.
Janet,
What is your husband doing that you can't take much more of?

Gosh, that sounds so much like what I am going through right now. It just makes me want to cry. I told my husband when I got the surgery (and I truly meant it) that we were not going to be among the stastitics.
But I just can't take much more.

in my experience, I became a 'born again healthy person'. My ex-spouse was not interested in exercising, or losing any weight. He wanted the status quo to remain the same, that is, a nice 'safe' wife who didn't rock the lifestyle boat. When I lost weight and started dressing in a stylish, if not sexy manner, he protested by being verbally abusive and avoiding me, when he wasn't trying to sabotage my diet. He started drinking more (he already had a drinking problem). In short, he couldn't deal with the new me, and we grew apart, and finally, I gave up and left (but not until after 24 marriage counselling sessions).

Cheeks, there are non-lactose/whey-based protein products, such as soy or rice-based proteins. You might try avoiding milk-related foods for a week and see if it eases the cramping.

Thanks for the information. When i got the Lactaid I also checked
out other GNC products. The lady said to try unflavored protein powder and
mix it with my Crystal Light or whatever I am drinking. Then milk will not
be an issue.

Dont worry Brenda, only 4% get Lactose intolerant. Its so low that only 4
patients out of his office ever got it. That is one of the reasons they dont
know how to deal with it. They have very little information there for me.
This group has been my God send from the angels. Its very unlikely that you
would end up like that. Not likely at all.

I've always been a lactose-intolerant person who adored ice cream,
custards, puddings and such and -- despite the pain and
embarrassment, which could be considerable -- consumed them them all
the way to 286 pounds. Given the choice between weighing 186 pounds,

what...??? Duh. For me, it's an easy choice.

OH Kelly
That is wonderful news to me. I LOVE milk and enjoy it so much. The
weight loss team said sometimes you can "out grow" the problems. That is
what I am hoping will happen to me. They say these things can be
temporary. I tried the lactaid last night and this morning.......no problems BUT I
do also love cheese etc. I guess time will tell. If I have learned nothing
else from this journey it is one day at a time.

Cheeses have never been a problem for me, since in many (perhaps
most?) cheeses the lactose has been converted by the
enzymes/microorganisms (I'm not sure, not a pro or even well informed
on this, LOL) that occur in the cheesemaking process. Lots of people
who are lactose-intolerant can't handle cow's milk, but once that
milk has been turned into cheese, no problem.

Kelly, you are just too cute. I wish I could stop tossing this around. It's a lot of things that bother me...I keep thinking I could do this myself without surgery (which I can't), that I have had enough surgery (which I have), the hanging skin (which would be a problem), the relationship with my best friend, and my other health conditions which surgery wouldn't fix. I don't want to get into this and loose the last few things I have left in my life. I too am on disability and can't afford anything fancy. I will still have to cook meals and feed my family, but not eat with them,,which I don't care about but bothers them some. My husband and I got together when I was smaller and gotten heavier through our marriage and I think if I do this now that it wouldn't have been too long for him to forget that. My best friend is a guy and his wife gets jealousy issues from time to time as it is. I won't loose a 20 year friendship based on that. He says it
is her problem and she will have to deal with it...but I'm leary. I'm sorry I just go on and on, but I just feel in a tailspin about it all.

I wonder if someone who became lactose intolerant after surgery wasn't predisposed or had it mildly but like you, Dororthy, ignored the symptoms. I don't think anyone should generalize about what will happen to everyone. I have found very few things I can't eat but it's mostly due to the density or tremendous sweetness (like thick heavy ice cream, overcooked chicken breasts or cake frosting). Also, I think as time goes by, we can eat more in quantity and variety of foods. I'm over 4 yrs out and rarely have any problems whatsoever.

Brenda,
Even though health-wise you need the surgery, emotionally you are far from ready for it. It's a tough surgery. Not just physically, which it is, but emotionally too. Food is any overweight's person's best friend and it's very hard to give it up, almost permanently. I think anyone going into this new way of life has to be EXCITED and determined, with maybe a slight hesitation due to fear of things like death. You have way too many concerns.
Ok, skin. The younger you are, the less likely you'll have skin problems. I do and I will get them taken care of as soon as I finish losing back some of my recent weight gain. When I look at the pics of myself 2 yrs ago, at my slimmest, I looked good! :) I have plenty of loose skin, but I am 57 and probably would have anyway!
If you really HATE being fat, HATE everything about it, want being thin more than anything else, you're ready but I don't think you are just yet. There's no rush really. Take your time. Any friend who loves you for being fat, dear, is not a real friend but an eating partner.
Sheila

I thought the surgery was more about being healthy than thin. I don't want to do this to be thin...I need to be healthy. I have every medical problem except the sleep apenia that this surgery is supposed to fix. NO, it's not going to cure everything wrong with me, I have auto immune diseases, but it will help a great deal. I have no qualms about that. I don't have any friends that love me because I'm fat, but in spite of it. I've accepted the way I look now, because it's the way I look. I'm not going to be "skinny" six months after I'm dead, but I can be healthier. I am considering this surgery for medical issues and the weight loss for me is a nice side effect for a change. No, I don't like the stares, comments, uncomfortable seating, etc that goes with being this size...but you get stares, comments, and weird seating being skinny too. There are no easy answers in life, but there are changes for health.

If I remember, Kelly, it wasn't? a whey isolate? I think it was a regular
whey protein. It was delicious but I couldn't keep anything down nor stop the
stomach/mouth gas at that time. I had finished it but I began to suffer so
much. can you check for me once again? I think the man at GNC said that as
far as he knew there were only "two" isolates there available for lactose
intolerant people. He knew which once because his body builder friend was a
person like this and told him the two that he could tolerate. one was not good
tasting and they other, he said, was just ok but better. he has to try all
of the products there to sell them.
Kelly, although your banana shake was the BEST tasting of all of them that
I had ever tried, I could not tolerate it. Our systems have changed since
the surgery and anything milk or cheese or gravy or chocolate causes a violent
eruption within us. It hurts a whole lot. :(
Look on the side of your canister and see if it has the word ISOLATE or soy
at all.
Also I heard that soy puts weight on women's bodies like crazy.
Hmmmmm. Is the ISOLATES made with SOY?
peace, lee
Did you like the banana that I sent you Lee? I did send it to you right? I
love it ;)

LOL its just lee. I get lazy and dont put in the comma, forgive me.
I went out and bought lactaid pills and some GNC Protein Milk that is a
whey isolate so lets see what happens. The man there almost talked me into
buying the banana creme $99 on sale for only $49 but I didn't know if this
powder would work with lactose intolerant people. So I asked for a sample.
he
said that you can take the canister home, open it, take a scoop or two and
then
return it if it doesn't agree with you, wow. But I wanted to buy a small
amount, so I saw the ready made shakes of the same protein for $10. I
haven't
tried it out yet but I will let you know if it is lactose tolerant.

Hi Peace Lee,
I like the Click protein shakes, which are calcium caseinate-based and I
tolerate them well, although they are a bit higher in carbs than some of
the
others. Also, Jay Robb whey-based protein shakes are isolate-based, and the
Isopure line; also the Syntrax Nectar line. You mix these with ice and
water and blend. Some of the Syntrax Nectar ones are more like a fruit
juice
texture and flavor, but they all mix with water. Gayle has some great
suggestions posted about the shakes, too. As far as the Lactaid is
concerned, the
instructions are to take them right before you drink milk or other dairy.
Hope this helps.

That is another source of concern. I live on Social Security. This stuff
costs a lot. I have a very limited income. Of course maybe, just maybe,
if I can loose the weight and get the other health issues under control I
could get a job........ yadda yadda yadda. I have not been pain free in
more then 3 years it is so heavenly to not be in pain. This whole thing is
worth the effort. Even the 2nd trip to the OR. I got the hospital today and
almost had a heart attack at the cost of my 6 day "hotel" stay.

Sometimes you can do better shopping on line. I found shakes on
Amazon (with free shipping), often for less than at retail outlets.
I'm wary of outfits like that famous three-initial one, often found
in malls, that starts with a "G". Anything priced at $100, on sale
for $50, may not have been worth $100 in the first place. I don't
know much about nutrition, but I do know something about
manufacturing and retail markups. As usual, it's "buyer beware."

I agree 100% with you on that. I make sure I research anything new
that I buy. From many sources. I can be a real B with an itch about things
if you know what I mean. I did not buy at that place just checked it
out. I told the clerk I had to think about it. Most people in those stores
are paid by commission so they will say just about anything to make a sale.
I also used to work in manufacturing so I know how things are done there
too. Not good.
