I hope that's truly the way you view it. You won't get skinny. Few people do. After a year or so, the "affects" of the surgery seem to loosen up and it continues to be somewhat of a battle, keeping weight off.
The reason I was so harsh previously was that you seemed so reluctant to lose a friend, or to have loose skin, things like that. Yes, losing weight will help you be healthier but you'll have to work at it, too. When I signed on for the surgery, I had to promise I'd exercise. When I follow the rules, I do so well.. I doubt I would have done all this without the surgery but it's not a magical cure.
If the surgery was just about getting thin, no doc would get insurance approvals. They do because it also makes us healthier. Within weeks, you will be significantly healthier.
If you don't mind my asking, approx how much wt do you want to lose? The more you need to lose, the better you'll do!
I do wish you lots of luck and happiness with this...it's all we all want.
Sheila

NO, it's not going to cure everything wrong with me, I have auto immune diseases, but it will help a great deal. I have no qualms about that. I don't have any friends that love me because I'm fat, but in spite of it. I've accepted the way I look now, because it's the way I look. I'm not going to be "skinny" six months after I'm dead, but I can be healthier. I am considering this surgery for medical issues and the weight loss for me is a nice side effect for a change. No, I don't like the stares, comments, uncomfortable seating, etc that goes with being this size...but you get stares, comments, and weird seating being skinny too. There are no easy answers in life, but there are changes for health.

I discussed how much weight with my dr and I said I wanted to loose approximately 130 and he seems to think I'll loose more than that, but time would tell. I am reluctant to loose a friend, have loose skin, and things like that...as a whole...not just one particular one of them. I am looking at all aspects of this decision and not just any one thing. I am also reluctant to have it because of the new weight, new looks, new comments..it's a whole. I have to decide what I can live with and what I can't. I am more of a private person and only very few people know I'm even considering this. I don't like drawing attention to myself and I don't like being sick. This surgery in no way is going to fix what is wrong with me. I gained the weight due to illness and can't get it off because of it. I can't agree to exercise until we see what happens to me after the surgery and they doctors are very aware of that. You want to try being in my shoes. Try
telling people that you really don't eat much, that you really don't like to eat, and be this overweight. If I could walk and exercise, I wouldn't weight as much...I can't do those things, and it's ended up in one big spiral. I know what caused this and what I can do to stop it. But nobody will believe me and I'm so sick of it that it's not funny. Then I look for advice because surely to God I'm not the only one that has doubts before surgery and I get lectured on for having feelings and wanting to consider every aspect of what I can live with. Everybody has things they are not willing to compromise on and I have to figure that out for myself. I just wondered if I was alone.

Brenda, I am truly sorry if I upset you. I wish you a lot of luck with your decision. Losing weight is fun compared to gaining. You'll definitely feel a lot better. If you are already eating very little, why does the doc feel that this surgery will help?
No one in this group would take the surgery lightly. Any and all of your friends will still love you thin and healthy, as much as they love you now. You know that! You'll still be you, but probably a little more confident and a lot healthier. Who wouldn't want that for you?
As far as loose skin: I have some loose skin but I bet you're a lot younger than me, so chances are yours will tighten up. With 130 lbs to lose, you're far from the point where you'd have the type you've seen on TV. You probably will not have as much loosened skin as you are worried about. If you had over 200 lbs to lose, then perhaps you might.
It is a huge decision, but if you follow your doc's orders, you'll be fine. I was and still am, and like I said, probably at least 20+ yrs older than you. And you're so right, it's not a cure for anything, but being healthy is so nice.
I do wish you luck and hope you find your answers soon.
Sheila

Besides this dang head hunger lol but everyone gets that, post or pre. You'll do fine. And even if you become lactose intolerant, then you will deal with it ok!

I'm 15 months almost post-op and have not developed lactose intolerant. Not all people do. I drink milk and eat tons of cheese

Subject: [After Weight Loss Surgery] Hi all
I tried a banana form from the hospital pharmacy...it was horrid. Now I'm afraid to try the others. This whole process is starting to scare me to death, and I haven't had the surgery yet. I just don't know what to do. I need it and it would help me, if it doesn't kill me first. I don't think I could stand being lactose intolerant and does it get better after surgery if you get that way. I haven't went to GNC yet but I'm not sure what to look for if I do.

OK I just tried MUSCLE MILK Banana from GNC and it is perfect for lactose
intolerance. No problems at all. The taste was good but it was the ready made
cans like slimfast.
There regular barrels of proetein powders are usually 39.00 which is twice
more than Walmart. walmarts are $15 but not latcose intolerant.
The one lacotse intolerant barrel was $49. Its double size is of course $99
but was on sale for the regular barrel price of $49 which was good for
them.
If I find any other LI protein powders that are cheaper I will say
something. I hope others will do the same for us low budget people. I havent bought
a barrel of anything yet because of expenses but maybe Amazon.com has Muscle
Milk on their rosters?
I said I would comment on the taste of the product and if it brought well
being of not. It did fine.

Sometimes you can do better shopping on line. I found shakes on
Amazon (with free shipping), often for less than at retail outlets.
I'm wary of outfits like that famous three-initial one, often found
in malls, that starts with a "G". Anything priced at $100, on sale
for $50, may not have been worth $100 in the first place. I don't
know much about nutrition, but I do know something about
manufacturing and retail markups. As usual, it's "buyer beware."

The lactaid is making a BIG difference for me. I still buy the regular
milk because I have other people to buy for not just me and then use the
pills. I have used it 4 wonderful times and will continue to use it. I was
told by our local grocery store owner that they are coming out with lactose
intolerant cheeses and such soon because it seems this is becoming a problem
with other people too not just WL people. Huuuuuuumm can anyone say
"pesticides"? Ok not more soap box. At any rate this is just my two cents
worth. I have learned far more from this group then in all the classes I was
required to complete.

Wow, I'll have to try that. I have Muscle Milk in Chocolate flavor
and can't stand it.
Interesting how our tastes may change after surgery. I used to adore
egg salad, but ate it during my post-op soft food stage and now can't
stand the thought of it. I've been off Crystal Lite for a while, for
the same reason -- too much of it at the beginning.
It was like tuna in the old Weight Watchers days, when tuna was what
we ate, and ate, and ate. For years thereafter I avoided tuna.
(Probably saved myself from mercury poisoning, LOL.)
While my cravings are largely gone, I now crave apples, but the
craving's not insane. For a while I got into dried figs, but quickly
realized that I was using them as I'd always used sugar -- and
head-craving them (and eating three a day, counting the hours till I
could have another one). So I can't have them around any more.
As they say, the surgeons fix your stomach, not your head.

Cheese is hard for me because of cows milk and I am new at this by 2 months
but my doctor suggested only very hard cheese will be ok and he was right.
Swiss, cheddar and very expensive hard cheese seems to be fine.

I was only allowed cottage cheese (nonfat or lowfat) for some time. But, I'm not, nor have been lactose intolerant. I wasn't allowed hard cheeses for some time. Have you tried feta cheese? It's made from goat's milk.

>Yes, yes, yes and it was no, no, no, LOL.
Too funny!
But then I don't think Feta was designed to be eaten by itself. On a
Greek salad, or in Spanokopita, it's heavenly. But alone, as you say,
no, no, no, LOL.
Post-op, I suppose we could eat Spanokopita sans pastry -- i.e., as a
quiche. It's just spinach, feta, and egg, baked. Lovely!
It took some time, but I learned to love goat's milk, which WalMart
carries. And I even learned to love some goat cheese -- very mild,
and never "goaty." Somehow, for reasons I don't understand, mild goat
cheese tastes (to me, at least), "fresher" than just about anything
else. I don't know how to define "fresher," but it's what happens
when your tastebuds sit up and say "Howdy!"
