Hmm, my weight is maintaining or gaining at 193 and I am a shorty so that's
bad.
Vic, what do you eat for high fiber in a full day. What do you eat for low
carbs in a full day? And what kinds of excersize, weight lifting and weight
bearing do you do?
Sometimes I need to get a better visual of how I am going to do things. I
am determined to understand all that I can do, and not just accept that the
doctor, maybe, didn't make my pouch as small as he should have. If he didn't,
then why would I have stopped at such a high weight (near 200lbs?)

Thanks for more details when you get around to it. Please share!
Desperate! lee

Hi Denise:

My favorite means of losing/maintaining weight is eating low carb, high
fiber and getting some weight-bearing exercise 3-4 times a week, with some
weight conditioning (weight lifting that does not build muscles).

I don't understand the stop in weight loss. From what I have read there is a 1 year honeymoon period when you should just be loosing. I am 1 month post op RNY I have lost 42 lbs. and still have 60 that I want to loose so this is very disappointing to hear. I started at 230 goal in 130. Sara

I eat mostly protein foods - eggs, meat, fish. For carbs, I eat nuts (almonds, peanuts, sunflower seeds) and Ezekiel bread (a sprouted multi-grain bread that has no flour in it) and fresh vegetables (lettuce, cukes, bell peppers, radishes) and fruit (oranges, strawberries, canteloupe, apples, pears, etc). My parents did a weight loss diet that allowed them only 33 carbs per meal. They ate anything they wanted for those carbs, but I would tend to go with whole grain products and fresh fruits. They lost 60 and 80 pounds respectively (Mom/Dad) in 6 months time.

Avoid alcohol and anything made with white flour.

How long since your surgery? Do you do weight-bearing (on your feet) exercise?

Sorry, I didn't clarify, but my fiber comes from whole, multi-grain foods (Ezekiel bread), fresh vegetables and fresh fruits.

Hello everyone.. I am desperate to receiving advise from anyone who has had the rny gastral bypass surgery. I had surgery 11 weeks ago weighing at 285lbs and am now currenty 200lbs. I love the fact I have lost alot of weight, but am scared it may have been extremely fast and may have a higher rate of putting it on fast as well. I do exercise 1 hr a day always, but I have no energy after a full day at work and then my daily exercise. My work schedule is not a normal work schedule due to it is a rotation and varies if you work 5 days or 10 days before you get a day off. I think this is a big part of my issue, but would love to hear from anyone if there is something more that I can do to help besides take the required vitatmins. Also, does anyone have any receipts for taking protein drinks besides just adding frozen fruit and yogurts???? Thank you so much for your help... I do not live close to any support groups for advise....

Shawna

Hi All, I'm new to all of this.  My surgery was 8 weeks ago.  In 2 months I have lost only 30 lbs.  I am working out and taking all of my vitamins.  However, my job is very busy and I sometimes don't get my complete breakfast & lunch in. I'm also still very tired!  Could it be that I am not eating enough?

Shawna:

I had RNY in 1999. You sound right on target to me. You probably had an initially large weight loss, like 20 pounds the first month, then several pounds a week. Sounds correct to me.

Please don't put energy into wondering if you will 'have a higher rate of putting it on fast'. At this early stage, you will be losing and not leveling off for a long time.

You also don't have to exercise daily, in my experience. 3 times a week keeps my weight maintained with watchfulness of my caloric and carbohydrate intake. If I want to lose weight, I cut back on those items and increase my exercise times (like go from 20 minutes to 30 on the treadmill and add another day's session).

Relax. You now have a tool that will make losing weight SO MUCH EASIER than it ever was before for you. Your weight will fluctuate a lot less with even the lightest amount of vigilance. But you must always be mindful, and not sit back, eat anything you please and not exercise. THAT is the way to gain. As long as you have some minimal exercise and keep your meals protein-centered and your diet moderate in calories and carbs, you will achieve weight maintenance.

If you keep doing what you are doing now, you will continue to lose over time. You might focus on a goal time that is a year from your surgery date. That's about when your body will have settled down and gotten very used to your surgical change. That's when you should review your exercise and diet habits to ensure you know what your body needs to maintain.

Negligence, ignoring what you have learned about exercising and diet, will lead to weight gain. It's a simple matter of 'physics', it's not a 'mystery' any more.

Regarding your protein question, you might try some protein bars or commercially made protein drinks. I like the Worldwide Nutrition Protein Plus bars. Read bar labels carefully, watch for calories, fat and carbs in the bars you select, and of course, protein content.

Soon enough you'll be eating more solid foods for protein. In the meanwhile, you can always puree things in the blender. My favorite treat back in the early days was hummus, I'd eat it with lettuce leaves.

Sorry this came long late, backed on emails from the weekend.

Ugh! I know your frustrations. I was 311 at surgery and got down to 194 and am currently back up to 208.5 lbs. I am only 15 months post-op on July 9th. I quit smoking on April 1st (3 months ago) and I truely believe this is what caused my 15 lb weight gain. I am so frustrated and irritated and upset over it. Im suppose to be going down in weight, not up. Ugh! The further you are out the harder it is to maintain.

I too am interested on how to get back on the saddle, how to kick back my weight loss and get back on the right track. I was thinking of starting weight watchers also but didnt feel it was fair to anyone there. But I too deserve to be able to keep track of things for myself too right?

Hi Everyone,

I really could use some tips on how to get back on track and lose 20 pounds. I was 230 after surgery down to 168. That was my lowest. Now Im back up to 185. I exercise 2 hrs a day 3-4 times a week. In great physical condition but wearing a very tight 12.

I can eat bascially anything I want. Im so frustrated.

Do you have any ideas on how I can diet or do you have a book for pts that gives tips on how to get back in control.

I've joined weight watchers and thus far just maintaining. Im very embarrassed but desperate.

Thank you very much!

Everyone is different on their honeymoon period. Keep eating what you are suppose to and exercise. Make it last as long as you want it to last. Sneaking in things here and there cause the weight loss to stop. I believe that's what happened to me. I quit loosing after 6 months also.
I need to get back on track
