Different drs and insurance require different things. My insurance did not require the 6 month diet but my surgeon did. Then my dr that did the diet didnt do it correctly so I had to redo alot of it. Make sure that if they require a 6 month diet that you go every month otherwise it will not count! Just got my date yesterday so I am learning all this as I go.
Best of luck you Le!

Subject: [After Weight Loss Surgery] Insurance Approval
Hi,
I have been lurking for a few weeks while in the process of seeing my doctor to document weight loss or lack of. I was wondering how long it took for you all to get insurance approval? I have co-morbidity issues (need both knees and hips replaced, high bp, high cholesterol, etc.) and still have to be seen for six months by my family physician.
At the first seminar I attended, the assistant said I could be seen in a month, but then changed her story when I took the paperwork to my doctor. I am so frustrated and in a lot of pain. I truly feel this would help me so much. I have never been thin and I know the weight contributes to much of my problem. On top of this, it is quite possible I may be laid off due to budget-cutbacks from this new administration (a WHOLE 'nuther topic!).
I was just wondering what you all had to go through for your insurance to approve. Also, FYI - I am in Alabama.
Thanks!
Le

Thank you. I have been through all the diets for years, and always gain it back. Now it seems hopeless because I can't exercise due to the knee and hip issues. This is a test of patience for sure, and very frustrating. I wish they would get their act together before speaking.
Which type of procedure did you have and what happened? I think based on what I've learned so far, I will have the RNY if my insurance approves it and I still have a job.

I havent had surgery yet...it is scheduled for July 29th but I am going to have open RNY. I also have been through all the diets all my life and nothing has worked so far. I can lose the weight but then it always comes back plus some. It sure is a test but I think that I really needed the time to get ready for surgery mentally. It is a huge step and very much a life changing event!

I had to wait six months, but as frustrating as that was, it became a
precious time of learning and trying to cultivate new skills that I
knew would be required after the surgery: eating protein first, then
veggies, then fruit, for example, and drinking LOTS of water. It's
also time to begin building a support network, of asking all your
questions, and coming to grips with the emotional aspects of the
surgery and its consequences.

Since the state of south Carolina will not pay for any form of bariatric
surgery, I used Medicare since I am on disability because I am blind and all
I had to show were certain co-morbities and I had the top three at the time
of being diabetic, having high blood prssure and sleep apnea.
That surgery was the best thing I ahve ever done for me.

I do have to say that my husband was all for my surgery. Of course he saw
things that would benefit him in the long run... lol (if you know what I
mean).
I am so happy to have his support and understanding. I cant wait til he gets
home from this deployment to see me! I was only 5 months post op when he
left for deployment. Now I am 14 months post op and 117lbs lighter ;)

I realized this morning that my post never showed so I am trying it again. I
will be the first to admit that my marriage might not have been as strong as
I thought it was but I never thought WLS would have been the reason for my
divorce. My ex has adamently stated that after WLS he was no longer
attracted to me. Now I realize that it was out of insecurity on his part. I
never had his support during the pre-op procedures, therapy etc. He was so
adament he didnt want me to have surgery. I remember coming out of surgery
and getting back to my room and he was no where to be found for the next 4
hours. I eventually had to realize that I had to do this for me and me
alone. I am very proud of the strides I have made but I am thankful to be
rid of the 225 lb weight that would have loved for me to remaine 400lbs. I
wish everyone much success and my prayers as this journey seems to
continue.... .on and on....Enjoy the ride.

I cant wait for that feeling! My own surgery was just approved and am having surgery on July 29th. What branch of service is your husband in? My husband is a Marine veteran but that old saying "once a Marine always a Marine" is so true. I will keep him in my prayers that he is safe through this deployment!

Now I am 14 months post op and 117lbs lighter ;)

luckily he is ok with it now but he is not happy that i have lost 80
lbs...but i am happy. so i think he is ok with it now. my mother says that
he liked me heavy because he didnt have to worry that someone else would
want me...she thinks its insecurity also. i think my marriage is fine but
who really knows my mother was married for 25yrs before her divorce and she
didnt have wls...i figure if he cant love me smaller than he never loved me

He's army national guard. Some call that a "weekend warrior" but they all protect the same regardless. Right?
Oh, you'll feel a lot of feelings after your surgery. Good, bad! You'll experience a lot.

I cant wait for that feeling! My own surgery was just approved and am having surgery on July 29th. What branch of service is your husband in? My husband is a Marine veteran but that old saying "once a Marine always a Marine" is so true. I will keep him in my prayers that he is safe through this deployment!

They are there protecting us the same as those that are active duty! My cousin is Army National Guard and just came back from 3 tours in Iraq.
I am feeling alot right now...nervous, excited, anxious, etc.! It hit me yesterday that this is really real. Even though I am nervous I know that the change will be a good one. I cant wait to see the changes both good and bad.

Hi Judy,
I too have the problem of being lactose intolerant. You can try the soy, as suggested, or in my case I discovered I could tolerate the shakes containing whey protein ISOLATE, not whey protein concentrate.....apparently the ISOLATE version of the whey protein is partially broken down, not needing as much lactase enzyme as the concentrate. The other option, if you have already a stash of shakes with whey protein concentrate, is to purchase lactase over the counter. Digestive Advantage has a lactose-intolerance formula; there's also a product called Lact-Aid, which when taken with the shakes, adds the missing lactase to your system.
Good luck!!
