Hi:
I'm 7 ½ years out with a DS surgery. My dietician advised me to go on
straight liquid protein for 3 days in place of meals, and make sure I
exercised at least 15-30 minutes daily. It worked for me back then and took
me off some whopper plateaus. Then, for the next two days replace one of
the meals with food, and go back to my regular food on the 6th day. Again,
continuing to exercise.
I started at 276 and ended at 123-126 pounds. I have maintained my weight
all these years by following the plateau. When I gain 5-10 pounds – which I
can do when I get into my potato chip and chocolate gigs – I use this and
the weight comes off.
I'm 53 years old and had the surgery when I was 45 so it has worked for me.
I also still eat 3 main meals and small snacks in between. At my age, I
need all the help I can get to kick start my metabolism. The dietician
described the body as a car – without fuel it won't run. Every time you eat
or fuel up, it kick starts your metabolism – thus the grazing method. Even
at this late date with the DS surgery – I don't eat large meals so grazing
stops me from feeling hungry.
Hope this helps.

Hi Lisa,
I'd love to see what your dietitian gave you on plateaus. I'm definitely
sitting on one for a few months now.
Good luck with your weight loss. Sounds like this new surgery could be a
good option. Thanks for being willing to participate in the study to prove
it out.

Hi Ellie,
I had a lengthy conversation with our study dietician and she gave me a
document on Weight Loss Plateaus. If anyone is interested, I can post the
document OR post the highlights.

Wow – that is great. Please keep us informed about your progress and
results from the TOGA. My daughter is extremely obese and this would be an
option she would consider. I had the full BPD/DS which basically means my
incision goes from my breastbone down to below my belly button – at 276
pounds, my incision was about 15 inchs long – since losing the weight to
120s, it is now about 6-7 inches but I have no stomache muscle. They
basically took everything apart – took out ¾ of my stomach, and gave me a
distal cut so the common channel between my large and small intestine is
very small. Then everything was reattached so my stomache works the same
way it did before the surgery. This means I don't absorb fats or vitamins
and minerals very well. I have to take supplements daily and potassium is
the one that seems to cause problems. I have to take supplements daily
because if I don't get enough potassium in my diet, my feet and legs cramp
up something terrible.
Since I haven't been able to afford plastic surgery, I still have lose skin
and a cute little apron above my pelvic area that I would love to get rid
of, however, since I'd already had 2 heart attacks prior to the surgery when
I was 45 years old – now 53 years old – not so sure my cardiologist would
even approve it. I haven't had any heart attacks since, my diabetes is
completely gone, and my fatty liver has been normal for years. So, it was
worth it no matter how it looks. My husband thinks I'm still the sexiest
thing and loved me at 276 and still now – so, I have no real complaints.
My DS surgery saved my life so now I am the proud grandmother of 4 – at the
time of the surgery my 8 year old granddaughter wasn't even a year old. I
had the surgery because of my health issues – 2 heart attacks, diabetes,
fatty liver which made me and my Drs. Wonder if I would live to see her grow
up. At the time, my then cardiologist told me after I had lost the weight
that the way I was going he thought if I survived another 3-5 years I would
be lucky.
So, I am in favor of any type of WLS surgery that works. Anything that will
improve the quality of life – anytime I hear about a new procedure, I am
thrilled that this opens an another door for someone to get healthy and
happy.
God Bless and good luck with your journey.

Subject: [After Weight Loss Surgery] Weight loss plateau
Hello friends,
I had a new, non-invasive type of weight loss surgery on 3/25/09. To date, I
am stuck at a weight loss plateau for 3 weeks. (more about my procedure
later, right now I could use your insight and experience).
I lost 38-39 lbs (depending on how I stand on my scale) to date. When I
stopped losing, I increased my exercise from 30-45 minutes and nothing
changed. I seem to be 'Playing' with the same 3-4 lbs each week. I try not
to weigh myself too often however I do anyway. I read all the posts about
"tiger hunger" and I agree with all of you. I also read the pouch rules for
dummies. That was a very informative article, thanks!
Does anyone have any suggestions how to get my weight loss going again? I
did read about a few members who went back to 2/3 days of liquids, following
by 1/2 days of soft foods and then "regular" foods. I try to eat a high
protein, low fat diet. The dietician in my study told me I was eating too
many carbs at 30 days out so I try to watch the carbs also. What do any of
you suggest?
Thank you ALL for your posts they are informative and supportive. My weight
loss procedure is called TOGA - transoral grastroplasty. They put me out,
went down my esophogus with a new instrument (TOGA) & created a pouch that
holds 4-5 ozs of food at the top of my stomach then stapled it. There is a
small hole that empties into the rest of my stomach. I'm pretty sure it's
just like the lapband or stapled pouch procedure. I am part of a clinical
trial to determine if this new device will help people lose weight. There
were no laproscopic or surgical cuts and I was only in the hospital over
night. I was on liquids for 1.5 to 2 weeks, soft foods for 1 wk and then on
to regular foods. I have been clean & sober for 21 years and I know I eat
compulsively. I am using the discipline of 21 years of sobriety to help me
through the "head hunger" times and most of the time it works.
Your help and sharing your experience will be very helpful.
Thanks.

Siri,
Thanks for sharing your experience. Since I've been unemployed for a year and I'm having problems with unemployment check delays, starting my weight loss will help me focus on something positive. Your suggestions regarding "jump-starting" my weight loss are great.
I decided to do a semi-liquid diet for 2 days (3 protein shakes per day & 1 meal, protein & veggie) followed by 2 days of soft food and then back to my weight loss program. I actually like protein shakes and some protein bars.
I am hungry right now however I know I can have another shake within an hour, so I can deal with it.

Hi Friends,
Siri's stories as well as other stories I read are amazing. I am glad I found this support group. I've been involved in online support groups for years and it's a valuable tool.
I am somewhat familiar with the WLS surgery options. Can someone tell me what RNY is? I know there is the lapband and also used to be stapling with a resulting pouch. I didn't know there were variations on the original bariatric surgery where they reconnect your intestine to your stomach.
I selected the TOGA study because it didn't involve any surgical cuts, laproscopic or otherwise. I form keloids, which are scars that heal over & over, thus I don't want any more scars on the trunk area of my body. I had gall bladder and surgery for a uterine fibroid years ago with two resulting scars.
Your help and support is appreciated.

Can anyone recommend a good protein shake. The one I bought at Wallmart is loaded with too many calories. 276 without the milk. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Pat,
I always liked Spiru-teen protein shakes. Approx 99 calories, no fat and 14 grams of protein. Plus there are lots of flavors. They mix well with Milk or water. You can buy them online (Amazon.com) or various health food stores.

Can anyone recommend a good protein shake. The one I bought at Wallmart is loaded with too many calories. 276 without the milk. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Siri,
Thanks for sharing your experience.

Hey, I've looked this over, and I think I'll order it today-they will even send a free sample & coupons-hi protein-low fat and sugar. Thanks so much!

Hi Pat,
I always liked Spiru-teen protein shakes. Approx 99 calories, no fat and 14 grams of protein. Plus there are lots of flavors. They mix well with Milk or water. You can buy them online (Amazon.com) or various health food stores.
