This sounds reasonable to me, Siri, and practically what I have decided to
do. I am on day 3 of protein powder and soup broth. So far my plateau has
begun a smidgen of letting go. two pounds for 3 days is something, anyway. I
have been able to excersize because of weather and responsibilities, but
today the weather may break and let me outside.

Ok this is news. I went to my surgeon 4 hours away (this time, sometimes
more or sometimes less). It was a seminar for those who already had the
surgery and then another seminar next door for those wanting the surgery.

What I learned was very valuable. He said:

The hormone Ghrelin is what is responsible for our hunger, AND, (what I
have been saying about the Hungry Tiger) is the hunger, when it starts is lower
in the small intestines and not the stomach anymore. (more like a fierce
biting pain)
This is exactly where my NEW hunger is. The reason is, the upper part of
the stomach is where most of the Ghrelin is made and they detach that part of
the stomach, but it is left there inside of you for an RNY and so therefore
it take 6 mos to 2 yrs for the Ghrelin to sink down and begin its hormonal
hunger thing, or less in my case.

That is the major thing in hunger and what they are researching to stop
with a diet pill. It stops the hormone Ghrelin. When asked if it was safe to
take a diet pill with WLS, he said, "GO AHEAD. It does not interfere with
anything and as long as you are taking your supplements and getting your protein
in, why not?" He said many people take phentermine with the WLS. My
question in my head was, where can I get phentermine these days? LOL

Then I asked him about the "vegas nerve", the nerve responsible for hunger
stimulation. He said that they actually cut part of that nerve out during
the surgery for RNY so its better than it was before.

One last thing that was said was, WLS is like a car traveling across the US
to California, you can diet your way across in which you will never get
there or you can use a tool to get there (a car) and you will get there for
sure. It may take 6 mos to a year but you will definitely get there.

Hmmm, maybe they will come out with a jet airliner to get us there, next?

My feelings are I am very honored to have had this surgery after fighting
for it for 10 years with some blasted doctors who treated me roughly and
indignitly. Then to find this doctor miles away who treated me fairly and
honestly is nothing short of a miracle for me in my life so I want to know
everything on how to fight to make this work. After all, this operation did not
come easy for me, I had to fight to get it every day. NOW, I am going to have
to do the same fight only with my body this time. Fighting with your body to
comply is the hardest thing because I like to be easy on myself and ease
into things the kind way. Being on the protein powder drink for 7 days is not
all that unkind, because when I look at the scale (which is night and day) it
is kind to me and I feel as though I just gave myself a big hug in loving
who I am and how I can become me again.

Peaceful Thoughts on your WL journey,
Lee

Lee,
When I feel "tiger hunger", many times it is emotional hunger and not physical hunger. I'm not saying I don't get hungry 4 months after weight loss surgery however many times when I want to eat it's because it's in my head. This is especially true at night when I want to graze.
I've been unemployed for a year and on those rare days when I'm frustrated with my job search and bored, I want to eat. I walk 30-40 minutes every morning. When it's hot, humid or rainy, I use Leslie Sansone's Walk at Home and I do a 1 or 2 mile walk (translate to 20 or 35 minute walk at home).
I'm on my 2nd day of a semi-liquid diet and the scale is back to 220. Starting tomorrow, I will move on to soft foods. The 1st day was torture and I really was hungry. When I'm hungry (either physically or emotionally) I tend to focus on food so yesterday I did everything I could to re-focus my mind. This morning I was not hungry.

Enjoy your day!

Hello Lisa,
I wished I had brain hunger as I do right now on the protein shakes. Its
easy for me to ignore emotional or brain hunger. When my lower ab start
tearing and gnawing, I am gripped with total starvation. (like my body really
needs something?) I am calmed now by the protein powder regiment, thank the
Lord! The ghrelin hormone is strong with me, ungodly strong. I hope I make it
with the rest of you.

Peace to me and you, Lee
Ps. we started at about the same time at about the same weight,

Dear Lee,
Elaine here.  You are always such a fountain of knowledge.  Thank you for sharing everything you learn.  I'm so happy to hear that you have a logical reason for your body's behavior.  Much peace to you.

Lee,
Just remember you can deal with the hunger one day at a time or one hour at a time. I find that's the best way to deal with any challenge.

Just the powder and the soup but sometimes I add in a hard boilded egg for
a balanced snack that is just 2 oz.

Date: Fri Jul 17, 2009 9:54 am ((PDT))

There is a new ceramic "heat retentive plate" that stays hot for half hour and requires only one minute preheating in a microwave oven; the rim stays cool for safe handling with bare hands. It is ideal for people who like to eat slowly, like gastric bypass patients, it really keeps food warm. Type HotSmart in any browser search engine. It is available at Amazon.com.

OK, don't you have to eat slowly after WLS? Doesn't food get cold? Do you
know a better "heat retentive plate" of any brand? I thought you'd be happy
to know.

Subject: [After Weight Loss Surgery] CERAMIC PLATE THAT STAYS HOT FOR HALF
HOUR

There is a new ceramic "heat retentive plate" that stays hot for half hour
and requires only one minute preheating in a microwave oven; the rim stays
cool for safe handling with bare hands. It is ideal for people who like to
eat slowly, like gastric bypass patients, it really keeps food warm. Type
HotSmart in any browser search engine. It is available at Amazon.com.

I don't think it is a salespitch. We welcome recommendations of products that are helpful to life after WLS, and this sounds like one of them.
