Dear Chelsea, is there some reason you have not spoken to your surgeon or a psychologist? You have issues about which our group members are really not qualified to advise you. Please seek professional help. I think that even if you believe you can't afford it, you can find some help.

Before my wls last June I was approx 260 lbs and now I weigh 104. I'm 5'3" so that's not terrible, but more and more I find myself exercizing to the point of exhaustion or pain and forcing myself to vomit up at least one meal a day. Has anyone else gone through this? What kind of help do you recommend? I'm on medication for depression and anxiety and see a therapist regularly. Please, any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I had my weight loss surgery on 3/25/09 however I've been a compulsive overeater all my life. Food was my first drug. The biggest challenge I face daily is fighting the urge to overeat. I can look at a plate of food and want to eat it all even though I know I can only eat approx. 1/4 or 1/3 of the portion. I'm also a recovering alcoholic and I know that I can always start my day again. If you are off-track, you can start again. I've seen quite a few posts about the 5 day pouch test. If you google 5 day pouch test, you'll find a website that describes it.
I also find that sharing here and with my close friends helps me greatly. When I get the thoughts out of my head, I can sort things out and ignore the overeater in my mind.

Any suggestions, I worried.

My favorite way of gaining control of my eating habits is to cut back on carbohydrates. Carbs encourage your appetite. Avoid any 'white food', like bread, baked goods, potatoes, sugar in anything.
After about 3-4 days of avoiding such foods, you will find you can much better control your eating habits. Add in some frequent (3-5 times a week) weight-bearing exercise such as walking, race walking or jogging, and you will get better control of your appetite.
I do graze during the day, I eat whenever I feel like it BUT it's what I eat that matters. I go for protein foods first - I keep cooked meat in the fridge, some cheeses, tofu. I will eat those first, then green vegetables, perhaps in a salad, with a vinaigrette dressing (no sugar in that). I eat Ezekiel bread, which is made from sprouted grains, not flour.
For me, it has been OK to eat whenever I am hungry. I don't do the 3-square-meals-a-day thing. I eat on impulse, but I eat whole, unprocessed, non-sugar, non-white flour product food.
Eating well-selected foods - proteins, low fat, low-starch, no-sugar, lots of green veggies - and exercising regularly on your feet will make a BIG difference, I promise.

PS, my weight is well under control with the eating and exercise habits I've described below. I am 5' 7" and weigh 142 today, my weight ranges from 140 to 145. I wear a size 5/6.

Thanks for sharing what works Vic. I find that I make better food choices since I commited to the food plan after WLS. I tried to give up sugar, wheat & white flour years ago and got frustrated because there is sugar in everything, even catsup. I spend more time examining nutrition labels in the market during the past few months. I don't buy cake, cookies, ice cream, etc unless it's no sugar added. Then again, I bought No Sugar added Klondike bars and the 2nd ingredient was sugar. I haven't eaten them yet and I don't plan on it.
We were told to eat every 4 hours because it would keep our metabolism functioning at a high rate and that exercise was important. I walk 35-45 minutes per day, every day and I usually eat 3 smaller meals plus 2 snacks or 4 smaller meals & a snack. I try to focus on protein and veggies and minimize fat and carbs. However, it can be tough to eat low carb AND low fat because many times when they reduce the carbs they add fat & when they reduce the fat, they seem to add sugar.

That sounds wonderful Vic! I need to start following that example. I have been so bad lately on my eating too. Im ashamed to say I have gained back 21 lbs and am not happy. I am back up to 215lbs and can not seem to (mentally) take back control.
