My old standby is chewing sugar free gum - keep away from dogs - and brushing my teeth and drinking a glass of water or tea. Other than that, I will keep on hand a marinated vegetable recipe made with a ton of vegetables and all free. Also makes a good topping for fish or chicken.

That's just the steroids - nothing you can do about that side effect.

Boy, not sure what to say about this one. I don't tenderize chicken - obviously the chickens we buy generally are really young so they're tender. If you're buying a stewing chicken, you mgiht be talknig about something older and may need tenderizing.

So that leaves steak - I have to be careful of the saturated fat in many steak products but manage to make steak part of my eating plans twice a week. One of the simplest things I try is to take a Lawry's marinade - since you like lemon, I'd choose the Lemon Pepper or the Steak and Chop recipe. No oil but they do have vinegar - these also have lemon juice. And then I add an equal amount of fresh squeezed lemon jiuce to the marinade. I am currenly using a mango habanero I add to an equal part of white wine vinegar. Obviiusly, you can also choose to add more fresh ingredients - like extra cracked pepper to the lemon pepper marinade.

A homemade marinade I use for chicken is about 2 TBS crushed garlic, 2 TBS lemon juice, 1/2 TBS rosemary. One for steak but with vinegar is 2 TBS hoisin sauce, 1/2 TBS honey, 1/2 tsp rice wine vinegar (not white wine or plain white), 1/2 tsp ginger, 1/2 tsp chili paste with garlic, minced green onion to taste.

> Secondly, I'm looking for a barbecue sauce recipe. Our favorite is
> Bullseye, but I felt as if that put too much extra on my chicken.
Extra? Bull's Eye has no fat and is basically carbs and 20 calories per tablespoon. You can't get any lower in calories than pure carbs (or protein) for the same amount of weight. There are (and always will be) 4 calories per gram of carb - the only way you're going to get fewer calories is thin it with water - so is it the quantity you're tempted to use? The only thing I can think of is to stick with your favorite but make a thinner sauce of it - maybe add a little white vinegar, which Bulls Eye has in it's ingredients.

Alternately, you may be just as well off trying rubs on your meat. A marinade will tenderize your meat - a rub wil not tenderize and is best used with a dry heat like grilling or baking but creates a crust that you might like. So you may want to consider the Texas Barbecue Dry Rub 2 TBS chili powder, 2 TBS brown sugar, 2 tsp salt, 2 tsp black pepper, 1 tsp dry mustard, 1 tsp cumin.

> don't know why you started this now with our birthdays coming up."

Just an aside that I took a class once in how to negotiate and one of the things we ran into was the interests of someone we were negotiating with. Negotiating is supposed to be a win-win situation - each side does have to give up something but each side should get what they want most in the exchange.

So I think about your husband and my first question mgiht be what does he want out of the exchange? Obviously, there's the old refrain we always say about "he's comfortable the way things are" or "he's jealous because I'm sharing this with my daughter and he's left out or feels fat." But look deeper than that.

One of the techniques we used to get more information was to make a statement of observation and wait to see what else is said. So if I look at the remarks in this matter, let's see how terrible helpful he's being. He sees your "diet" as a reason you're not eating barbecue sauce and enjoying 4th of July and birthdays, right?

We really, really want to be helpful and give you support, but let'sd hear something more from you - we don't havce a lot of barbecue sauce recipes because we use regular barbecue sauce. Are you looking for something you'll like better? Or is your husband right and the change in eating patterns is real obivous when you're "on" and "off" a diet.

WW is a lifestyle. In the enthusiasm of doing everything "right", his observation is that you might be looking at depriving yourself of food instead of learning how anything fits into a moderate eating plan. But also, from your comment about barbecue sauce, I think you may need help on portion control - too much "extra" with the barbecue sauce. But that your husband might think it's the actual choices of food that might be the issue.

> I'm still trying to figure out the discussion board
> on the Weight Watcher's site.

Unlike this list, that has a small number compared to the WW message board, the WW board is already divided into topics, so you may want to focus on topics of interest to you. With a warning that some of the boards - unliek us! - can get pretty ugly and whiney. The ones I read regularly are On the Momentum Plan, the Simply Filling boar, Recipe Review, Food Finds (to get ideas about new products), a few of the fitness boards (two plans that are very helpful are C25K and New Rules of Lifting for Women), and pick the age group or amount of pounds you need to lose. There is also a board for specific medical conditions that you may find helful.

There are way too many posts on the entire board to read them all so break the boards down and see which ones are the most helpful to you.

Barbara, thank you for all the wonderful advice and support.

Gum-the only gum I can chew, due to dental work, is Freedent, and I
don't think it is sugar free. I don't like chewing gum, anyway, never
have. Good news is, I'm on the next to the last day of steroids, and
only take two today and one tomorrow. It's that six day pack where you
take six the first day and one less each day. So my appetite is
returning to normal. Even with the steroids I lost 5.4 pounds this
week, my second week. I know it won't always be like that, but I am so
thrilled!

In the old days of dieting, adding barbecue sauce was considered a
no-no, so without thinking it through I thought that it would be
adding too much to it. Thanks for pointing out to me what you did. I
just thought there might be one floating around that would use maybe
the Splenda brown sugar substitute, etc.

The marinade is a different subject though, as I am so picky about
marinade, but the one I like is a dry mix you add oil and vinegar (or
in my case, lemon juice) to. If I am eating a good steak, I prefer
just some garlic powder on it, but when you get a cheap cut it needs
the marinade, like for kabobs I made over the weekend.

I don't marinade chicken either, but I do like rubs on it.

As far as my husband, he was the one that encouraged me to start WW
with my daughter, although I was already thinking about it. I think
this past week he has seen my ability to eat with him and still keep
my points where they should be. He hasn't said anything negative in
days, only positive. Of course, that might be because my daughter got
"in his face" about the negative comments. There are times when I will
eat grilled chicken instead of a hamburger, salmon rather than steak.
But yesterday he brought me home a big mess of collard greens, he
knows they are my favorite. I'm cooking them today with some turkey
ham for seasoning. I have told him I will have a piece of birthday
cake and some fat free ice cream on our birthday (we were born the
same day only two years apart), but will also have plenty of healthy
choices for the cookout with friends and family that we are planning.
With my love of fresh fruit and vegetables, there are plenty of items
I can make that are not loaded with fat and sugar. Now he is on a kick
of the food costing more, but I have assured him that will not be as
obvious as time goes on. Right now, Laura and I are trying a lot of
different foods that are WW friendly, but that will subside as we find
our favorites. Since we always have seasonal fruits and vegetables in
the house, it's not going to be a huge difference, once Laura and I
get through testing new products.

Speaking of which, I tried the Fiber One Pancake Mix yesterday and I
loved it! Mike wants me to stick with Jiffy biscuit mix for him, which
is fine, it is much cheaper. But he was thrilled that I was eating
pancakes with him. I also found a good sugar-free syrup. The day
before when I had made French toast I had used a sprinkle of powdered
sugar rather than syrup.

Looking over the change in eating, I think the biggest is just
portion. I am not a sweet lover, but would eat an entire rib eye
steak, including the fat, etc. Changing over to lower fat foods in the
same category (i.e., butter, yogurt, cheese), and looking for higher
fiber alternatives, too, are some of the changes in my eating habit.
So far, about the only thing I have really given up that I miss is
bacon, but I know if I really want, I can have that, too. Just waiting
until I REALLY want it before giving up those points for something
that really isn't good for me-lol!

I have also been pouring over fast food listings, too, so that I will
know, in case we stop there, what the most appropriate thing is for me
to have. Since I am not a fast food type of person, anyway, it isn't a
problem for me, but one for my husband. He loves to stop at Sonic or
Burger King, etc., when we are out running errands or shopping. If I
don't eat something with him, he gets pouty. I am now trying to steer
him towards Subway, as it is better for both of us. But this started
one morning after I had blood work done, and I had to fast the night
before, so I was hungry. I stopped at McDonalds on the way to another
errand and didn't have my favorite-instead I thought the simple
sausage biscuit would be the best. I asked for one of the nutrition
information sheets and almost cried (this is after the fact). I could
have had my favorite-an Egg McMuffin, for 130 less calories and 16
less fat grams!!! I didn't stop to think ahead of time about less fat
in the muffin and the Canadian bacon over the biscuit and the sausage.

Well, I've rambled on enough. I apologize for the length of this.

Claudia,
Hi. I read your message to Barbar and I hope you don't mind my
replying. I think it's AWESOME that you were able to lose 5.4 lbs
even with being on steroids! Luckily for me I've never had to take
them, but my son (4.5) occasionally has to for his asthma and I hate
them! Luckily his is pretty mild so we don't usually need them more
than 1x a year, but they are pretty nasty. He cries when he has to
take it(and it's the liquid kind).

You're really lucky that your husband is willing to help you and
support you. My husband expect me to cook for him even if it means I
have to cook 2 different meals(what a PAIN). My kids are getting
better about eating WW-friendly stuff, but they prefer thing like tv
dinners and frozen chicken nuggets, so some nights it's *3* dinners.
Now that i'm doing Simply Filling, I can see it being even worse, since
DH won't eat Whole Wheat pasta or fat free ANYTHING(not that he
couldn't stand to lose a few pounds!) My daughter will eat some of the
things, she just has to be in the mood(she's 9). I told her tonight
that we're ALL going to start eating healthier and more variety of
vegetables, and of course she turned her nose up, but she's going to
try them if it KILLS me. DS is 4.5 and won't hardly try anything, but
I'm going to enhance his eat too if he'll at least try them. I found
some old recipes that look like they might actually work, just gotta
plug them into the WW site and see if they are FFs or at least low
point enough that they'll work. Some that I've entered already will,
so i'm anxious to try them next time we go shopping for the
ingredients.

Make sure you check your portion size on the Fiber One Pancake mix. I
like it too, but I found that I was making the pancakes way too big and
underestimating the points.Yes, I've started weighing my pancakes or
measuring just enough for me! I love adding apples(cut up into the
atter) and cinnamon to them, gives them a nice taste. The FIber One
Muffins are good, too, and if you use Egg Beaters and applesauce
instead of the oil and eggs it makes them REALLY low point! I do that
all the time, and my kids actually prefer them that way(you really
can't taste the difference, other than they're moister, which is
actually a GOOD thing).

Good job on transitioning from the higher-point items to the lower
point ones. Low fat and fat free items take a little getting used to,
but after 2 years, 2% milk tastest NASTY to me(rest of the family still
drinks it) and I hardly EVER eat anything but LF or Fat free cheese and
yogurt. On Simply Filling you have to eat PLAIN Fat Free Yogurt to not
have to count points, but I add blueberries and strawberries and Sugar
Free/Fat Free Chocolate Pudding powder to it and it's GREAT. I also
add 1 tsp of vanilla extract. A great thing I found, if you like
English Muffins, is Thomas's Better Start English Muffins. Th
Nutritional Info is: Cals=100, Fat=1, Fiber=5, for 2 points, but VERY
tasty. Arnold Sandwhich Thins, if you can find them, are only 1 point
and good instead of toast, English muffins, or bread. I don't know
where you live, but other than on the east Coast I think they're sold
as Orth Wheat or something like that.

For fast food, I haven't found too many good breakfast choices, but
lunch/dinner you're in luck. We just moved to DE where they have a
Sonic(haven't made it there yet), but at McD's, you can have a Big "n"
Tasty with no cheese and NO MAYO(have to ask for that) for like 5 pts I
think it is, or the Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad(no dressing) is 4 pts.
If they have their fat free dressing it's 5 with the dressing, but I
usually take it to go and use my own FF dressing. I used to LOVE their
Sesame Ginger Dressing, but apparently it's been discontinued! :(. The
Vinagrette isn't bad, but I liked the Sesame a whole lot better. At
Wendy's you can also get a plain baked potato and small chili for a
decent number of points, and that's usually pretty filling. Subway is
good, but make sure you get wheat bread and watch the cheese(adds a LOT
of points). I also use my own dressing when I order something from
there, which isn't very often. Do you have the "Dining Out Companion"?
That's a MUST HAVE, in my opinion.

Hope you have a great day tomorrow and you didn't mind me hijacking
your post!

Oh, then you might like this recipe -
1 to 2 cups chicken stock
3/4 cup sugar free pancake strup
2/3 cup white vinegar
1/2 cup tomato paste
1/4 cup Splenda brown sugar substitute
3 tablespoons molasses
1-1/4 to 2 teaspoons Wright's Hickory Seasoning Liquid Smoke
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 to 1 teaspoon granulated onion
1/4 to 1 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 to 1 teaspoon dry mustard
1/8 to 2 teaspoons paprika
1/8 to 1 teaspoon granulated garlic

Combine all ingredients in saucepan over medium high heat, wisk until smooth. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer 30-45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thick. It spatters toward the end so watch it.

> about
> marinade, but the one I like is a dry mix you add oil and vinegar

Adding oil gives the marinade a bit of thickness and it sticks to the meat better, but have you tried just leaving out the oil? Oil does make a difference in baked goods but I leave it out of marinades (and drastically reduce it in salad dressing).

Good for him and for her - frequnetly a change in routine throws house mates for a loop - they don't know what's going on or what to expect - squash casserole for supper? I added grated carrots to my tomato sauce in spaghetti one time asd my sister picked a sliver up and gave me a LOOK!

> eat grilled chicken instead of a hamburger, salmon rather than
> steak.
Sounds like you're making excellent choices! Remember that WW is a lifestyle and the old days of denying ourselves everything that wasn't a diet food are gone. There are still individual items we may haveproblems with - with my mother, it's potato chips - she can't stop at one. She only takes a handful but thirty minutes later it's another handful, then another thirty minutes later ...

So there's nothing wrong while we're trying to set good eating patterns to avoid some big temptations - but I always set a date or time when I've prepared my mind and my mouth for facing a temptation. Practice the correct behavior - the correct behavior isn't avoidance, it's learning to say no.

> Now he is on a kick
> of the food costing more, but I have assured him that will not be as

Oh, you might get some good ideas on the Recipe board at WW - they have a daily post about Adventures in budgeting that offers some great tips.

> The day
> before when I had made French toast I had used a sprinkle of

What a great idea! I usually just eat French Toast plain or with apple butter. I also bake my French Toast on a special pan I found that crisps it in the over just like in the skillet with no added oil. And of course I use a high fiber bread so I can lower the points for the French Toast.

> Looking over the change in eating, I think the biggest is just
> portion.

Boy, me too! I have tried not journaling and tried the South Beach - reasonably close to WW in the later stages - but my problem is portion control and I could always eat mroe than a "single serving" - or as a friend says, "why do they try to mislead us that these servings are two and a half per package, everyone knows it only feeds one person!"

Actually, I had a clever idea the first of the summer - Walmart has colored divided plates in vibrant colors - 4 plates for $1 - just plastic things but I bought some. And obviously with the dividers, I have ready-made portion control if I remember that my vegetables fo in the large portion, meat in one of the smaller ones. So when I make hot dogs with Hebrew National 97% franks (low point and tastes great!) with a low point bun, I put the sauerkraut in the large divider and try to fill it up. A great meal for about two points. If you haven't discovered your higher fiber breads and buns, do so.

> So far, about the only thing I have really given up that I miss is
> bacon, but I know if I really want, I can have that, too.

Oh, then you haven't discovered the Center Cut bacons? Two or three slices for a point? Yeah, I could eat all the package but there are days I make a Egg McMuffin using the Alternative English muffin (Walmart in the refrigerated section), one egg, and two slices of bacon - what a great taste!

> He loves to stop at Sonic or
> Burger King, etc., when we are out running errands or shopping. If I

I don't do Burger King as much but live for Sonic! My choice is usually just the Diet cherry limeade - maybe it wouldn't be the same if you don't eat but getting one of those is always a treat on a warm day. Other than that, most places offer a grilled chicken sandwich with mustard. At Burger King, there's always the Whopper Junior with mustard - I ask to have it cut in half so I can eat half of it and make up my mind whether I want the second half. But at Sonic, there's also the grilled chicken wrap.

> I could
> have had my favorite-an Egg McMuffin, for 130 less calories and 16
> less fat grams!!!

Oh, an even better choice would be to order the Egg McMuffin and - I confes, I eat only half of it. Much of the fat in the egg is in the yolk and the Egg McMuffin can be eaten a bit more than half if you try to avoid the yolk - it's an adventure in breakfast! Take a bite - the one that looks the best. Check to see where you think the yolk is. Really choose that second bite, too. And at the end, you have eaten about half the Egg McMuffin for half the points - needless to say, my dog loves going to McDonalds!

What might be another choice, depending on your points, it to avoid the biscuit, which carries more fat (and so more points) and order what you want on an English Muffin. You can also order anything you want with a "round egg" - the one they put on the Egg McMuffin - instead of the "square egg" the scrambled one in the biscuit breakfasts. If you really want the taste of that sausage patty, I cut the patty into a quarter and then place a bite of sausage into each portion of the sandwich - still the sandwich taste without as much of the burden.

Let us know how things are gonig for you - keep us informed!

I love it that people are willing to help me out, no problem with
someone else adding more info. Thank you!

I am still cooking two different meals some nights, as I have my
husband and son to think about, but it makes it easier with my
daughter on WW, too. Both my children that live at home are grown, but
for reasons I won't bore you with, have had to move back home. Tonight
I fixed two different meals-hamburgers for the guys, grilled chicken
for Laura and I. For myself, we had been to the Farmers' Market
recently, and I cooked okra and tomatoes and a pot of collard greens.
Laura doesn't like either, so she ate some leftover green beans that I
cooked fresh Sunday night. I had looked at making some fried cornbread
(too hot to turn the oven on, even with A/C. It was 120 in the sun
outside our back door today) to go with the collard greens, but felt
it wasn't worth the points. But many nights, we eat the same. I can
make spaghetti sauce and regular pasta for the guys and Laura and I
have whole wheat. In the meantime, he got a hold of my Breyers Fat
Free Strawberry ice cream and ate more of it than I did. He also
doesn't know that the banana pudding I made the other night was made
with fat-free milk and reduced fat vanilla wafers. He loved the kabobs
I made, even ate the zucchini on them! The good thing is, Laura and I
both love to cook and I collect cookbooks. I think I mentioned we have
had fun looking through our favorite recipes seeing what we could
change to make them healthier. Her big frustration right now is that
she is in a play with one of our local troupes and she has to eat on
stage-a lot!. Her director has been good about letting her pretend to
eat during some rehearsals, but since she is supposed to really pig
out, especially on the chips, there's been a few nights she has had to
eat some. Last night during rehearsal she had to eat two corn dogs,
potato chips (got vegetable chips from the health food store and put
them in a Lays bag), a lollipop, canned beans and a DQ Dilly Bar (got
the reduced fat for that). Her character is kind of a tragic but
comical one. The play starts Friday night, so I just encouraged her to
keep up with eating as well as she could the rest of the time and know
that rehearsals are almost over, and then she will just have four
performances. But she gained a pound this week, so she was quite sad.

I was lucky, when the children were younger they ate almost
everything. There are still a few things they won't eat-Laura won't
eat broccoli, Michael doesn't like steak (?!?!?). The youngest will
eat just about anything, even more so since his wife is a wonderful
cook and has him eating things he didn't like at home, like meatloaf.
My grandchildren will eat anything, too, it amazes me. If you have
something new, if you don't let them try it they get upset. They love
vegetables, and will often come back for seconds on vegetables and
forego things that aren't as good for them.

When I made the Fiber One pancakes, I measured out the batter so I
would have the right size pancake. I have found not to take any
portion for granted. I will look for the Fiber One muffin mix.

We live in Sonic central, probably have six or eight in our town and
more all over Oklahoma. It is not my favorite place to eat, although
it is my husband's. I will go over their menu, but off the top of my
head, I can't think of much that would be WW friendly. I have another
problem with peanuts (oil, peanut butter, etc., too) and MSG, so
between the three now, I think I may be quite limited to where I can
eat.

I will check for the Dining Out Companion on the Weight Watcher's
site, see if I can order it.

Good night, all.

Claudia,

Now that i'm doing Simply Filling, I can see it being even worse,
since
DH won't eat Whole Wheat pasta or fat free ANYTHING(not that he
couldn't stand to lose a few pounds!) My daughter will eat some of the

things, she just has to be in the mood(she's 9).

Make sure you check your portion size on the Fiber One Pancake mix. I
like it too, but I found that I was making the pancakes way too big
and
underestimating the points.Yes, I've started weighing my pancakes or
measuring just enough for me!

Good job on transitioning from the higher-point items to the lower
point ones. Low fat and fat free items take a little getting used to,
but after 2 years, 2% milk tastest NASTY to me(rest of the family
still
drinks it) and I hardly EVER eat anything but LF or Fat free cheese
and

Tasty with no cheese and NO MAYO(have to ask for that) for like 5 pts
I
think it is, or the Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad(no dressing) is 4
pts.

Subway is
good, but make sure you get wheat bread and watch the cheese(adds a
LOT
of points). I also use my own dressing when I order something from
there, which isn't very often. Do you have the "Dining Out Companion"?

That's a MUST HAVE, in my opinion.

Hope you have a great day tomorrow and you didn't mind me hijacking
your post!

I was so worried this week that I would not lose, as I felt as if I
was hungry all the time, but I kept on the plan eating a lot of raw
veggies when I was hungry, and only dipped into my weekly points one
time. I stepped on the scales this morning and had lost another 5.4
pounds!!!!!

I am so excited. I know this rapid weight loss I am experiencing at
the beginning won't keep up, but it is making me feel great!

Pulling out one of the belly dance DVD's after breakfast!

Hi everyone!

I have a very strange quirk! When I read- I like to pick a character and
read all that character's dialogue out loud. I even do it in front of Bob
and Marcella and they sometimes make up replies back which makes for some
fun.

But here's the thing. I was telling Bob that since I like to do that so much
(and sometimes I guess I am convicincing- like an actress cuz sometimes if
my chosen character is upset Bob thinks I'm really upset till he sees me
holding the book and then he says "Oh you're just reading again." lol) that
I would like to volunteer to read to people maybe one or two days a week.
Bob thought it was a good idea he agreed that since I love to read out loud
like that and do it so well it would be good to do.

I was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction where I would
find a volunteer opportunity like that?

Unless after sharing that you all think I'm insane and want to run me out of
your groups now. lol (not insane for wanting to give to others but insane
cuz I read parts out loud like an actress lol)

you should see if your local library has any kind of adult reading session as they do for children.. maybe you could start one?  try meetup.com and see if there is anything like that. nursing homes and hospitals are always needing volunteers to read and entertain patients, they would probaly really enjoy the acting in it. they love company in general.
hope that helps some

You might try a nursing home, children's hospital, day care center, or a
library. All of them will be glad to have a volunteer reader.
I have never met anyone like you but it must be kind of fun to be so unique.

Today I saw one of the moms in the neighborhood with her son. I have never
seen her but Marcella said she knows her and her son. Anyway I thought she
was really beautiful. Strikingly beautiful. Like America's Next Top Model
beautiful. And I was commenting to Bob and Marcella how pretty I thought she
was and Marcella said "But you're the prettiest mommy" and Bob said "You're
beautiful too and just as beautiful as her, you just don't seem to know it."
That made me feel so good!

7.1. Help!

I have been on the WW program about 7 weeks now and have lost 9.2
lbs. I started exercising regularly (treadmill and swimming) 5
nights per week 2 weeks ago and since I started I have not lost a
single ounce. In fact, I have gained a half pound. What's up with
that? I thought exercising would help me. I am so discouraged and
thinking about stopping WW. I cannot afford to keep going and paying
and not be losing weight. Please give me some advice on what I am
doing wrong.

Thanks so much,

Angi

Please don't give up and quit, that will only make you GAIN weight!
Sometime your body has to adjust to starting or upping an exercise
program. Are you eating all your WPAs and your APs? If you're not,
try eating MORE! Sometimes if you aren't eating enough your body will
hold onto the weight because you're not eating enough. If you're
eating some of the APs, try eating either more or less, you have to
play around with it. Also, is it your TOM? I know I gain or maintain
the week before or the week OF TOM. Be patient, play with the foods
you eat, too, maybe too much sodium? There could be a TON of reasons
you're not losing. If you go to meetings, talk to your leader and see
what he/she says.
