OMG Karen!!  I'm sooo sorry to hear about all that you've been through and are still going through.  Mom seems to be a "producer" too.  She's seeing a kidney specialist & he's helping her through some things.
Like you, I suffer from depression.  I'm bipolar, schetzo effective disorder, major depression with psychosis, and borderline personality disorder with suicidal tendancies.  I'm on 5 different meds for all of this, and I STILL have episodes.  Due to all this, I, too, am unable to work & on disability.  They've done quite a bit of adjusting since I'm a lot smaller than I was.  I see doc. today.  OH BOY..dreading that.  Anyhoo...
I've had one complication after another since the surgery.  I'm almost 18 months out and have lost 134 pounds, but am slowly gaining some of it back, which pleases family, friends, the doctor, but mostly me.   I've had 5 endoscopies, a colonoscopy, 4 surgeries, mono, 3 ear infections since January, flu, colds.  The surgeon was careless & nicked my spleen during the gbs, so now I'm a "germ magnet".  I, too, was told about being susceptable to kidney stones...AFTER THE SURGERY!  Why or why don't they tell ya these things beforehand?  Don't get me wrong, in the long run, I'm happy I had the surgery.  There's a lot less stress on my heart.  Like you, though I have NO energy.  It takes a lot out of me just to walk a few yards to the rental office/laundry mat.  BUT...my levels are all good (so they say).
Since I lost my weight so fast (as doctors say), I've developed osteopenia.  I also have low bone density, and my parathyroid is high.  I'm in constant severe pain due to having fibromyalgia (brought on by the stress of all the surgeries & stuff).
Sorry to ramble & complain.  Thanks for opening up like you did & sharing what you've been through.  My thoughts & prayers are with you.
HUGS!

Tracy,

I have had kidney stones from the get go after GBS. I have had numerous treatments and been told I need to up  the water to help them pass before they get too big, but at one point all I was drinking was water. I have been told that I am "a producer" of stones. My body just keeps making them. I have had 3 parathyroids removed (they handle the calcium in the body, but mine were taking calcium from the bones and depositing it in the kidneys) and I still make stones. I am now anemic the nth degree (getting iron infusions) and defficient in vit D, B12 and maybe my zinc. I have to be retested for the zinc. I am done 6 of the 8 iron infusions for the anemia, then they will test me again to see if it took. I do not feel any more energetic now than before. I have been told that they "may" have to do a bone marrow test to see if the marrow is making the iron or if I am not absorbing the iron.

Sorry, off topic. As for the stones and bladder infections, I get both often enough to be on disability. I have been told that people who have the surgery are more succeptible to stones. Nice of them to tell me years later.

I know alot of people have great success stories with this surgery. I have my own success. I was 322 lbs and am at 265 lbs. I was down to 198 lbs but gained it back when I quit my job and had to stay home. I suffer depression so that makes it hard to keep up with the weightloss. I am planning to restart the weightloss when they finally fix me sufficiently enough that I have the energy to move more that just the little that I do now.

When I have stones, I have to hydrate myself to death. But, that does not help me to stop making them. I have had a problem with the pain meds (addiction). I can stop but my body and emotions go through H***. My surgery was 2/19/03 RNY.

Wishing you well,

Karen Cortez

Hello all! Sorry I haven't been around, but I've been sick for I kid you not..4 1/2 weeks! I have virus, fluid in both ears, adema in left leg, bladder infection, and I've passed 9 kidney stones. That leads me to my question. I drink A LOT during the day. Water, sugar free kool-aid, juice. And I still developed kidney stones. Has anyone else had bladder infections and/or kidney stones??

TIA for any insight.

BTW..doc is happy that I've gained 8 pounds since the last time I saw him about 1 1/2-2 months ago.

Tracy,

Maybe you need to see the Endocrinoligist (sp?). That was who had the test ordered to find that I needed 3 of my parathyroids removed, I had/have hyperparathyroidism. Hence.....STONES. They may have another way to control  the problem but I have not found it. I have been on meds from the urologist but my stomach would not let them stay down. I upchucked them everytime I tried to take them. I am now only taking 1 prescription (Protonix for stomach acid) and tylenol. I have always fought depression but am currently not on meds for it. I try really hard to stay off too many  meds as I have od'd before. Mainly on pain meds when having stones or migraines. Now, the most I take is 3 tylenol pm tabs and that will be it for a long while. I get addicted to the oxycodone and hydrocodone. I refuse to take dilaudid (sp?) again, the withdraw is too severe. My hubby wanted to take me to the hospital but I explained all they would do is give me some of the drug and send me home. He agreed that would not be a good thing. So I suffered for days and days. Now, I have not had a stone in about 2 months. I guess I am about due for another one, lol. This is not what I sighned up for. I did the surgery so that I would be healthy and here I am sicker than I was at 322 lbs. Well, as they say "this too shall pass". Hope you get some of the issues resolved and get others under control with the meds. I keep saying that eventually I will run out of this to break and then I will be healthy. LOL.

Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. It helps us to hear that everyone has different experiences and some are great and some not so great. But this is our lives and we need all the info we can get to help us learn to do what we can. Sometimes others experiences let us know what was not such a great solution to a problem and what may be a great solution for a problem.

Enought rambling. Have a great day.

Karen Cortez

Thanks Karen.  I'm on 5 different meds for the mental issues.  Been battling it for a long time...6 1/2 years.  BUT...i need to remember that God will NEVER put me through anything I can't handle and he's there right beside me every step of the way going through it with me...hand in hand.
