1.1. File - List Rules
Posted by: "Serious-Weight-Watchers@yahoogroups.com" Serious-Weight-Watchers@yahoogroups.com
Date: Sun Aug 9, 2009 7:00 am ((PDT))

List Rules

1) NO discussion about sugar substitutes. This is one of the hottest topics and people are extremely opinionated. If you're concerned about sugar substitutes, hit Google. Don't discuss it here. You may share recipes with sugar substitutes and you may ask which bakes the best, etc., but NO discussion about health aspects. Do your own research and come to your own conclusions.

2) NO discussion of how Weight Watchers works. Can't come here and have us teach you the program. Most of the members here are paying members and Weight Watchers has a copyright on their information. They have a great program and deserve their financial compensation. So we won't tell you how the program works. Join up and get the materials for yourself!

3) NO solicitation for money. Period. Ever.

4) Be nice. Play nice. Share, share, share!

5) If you think you're still on moderated status, chances are you probably are. Email me privately at Serious-Weight-Watchers-owner@yahoogroups.com and put MODERATION in the subject line. Then ask to be taken off moderation. This is one busy group with over 5000 members, and taking people off moderated status is often times put on the back burner. Only make this request if you've been a member of the group for a month and have posted a few times.

6) If you want to discuss OT stuff, join the group set up by Kerry and Sherri. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/SWW-OTdiscussion/

7) Don't write a post to the group announcing you're leaving because you're upset about X, Y or Z at the group. People who do this are trying to stir things up. The funny thing is, as moderators, we know when people unsub. Those that try to stir the pot and announce they're leaving never do! They send a post, trying to cause problems, then stay and watch. When you see this behavior here or at other groups, know you're dealing with trolls or people with no class.

8) If you have a problem with the group, email the moderators. Don't post it to the group. Serious-Weight-Watchers-owner@yahoogroups.com

Thanks,
Lyn

Points values will vary so the best guide - since you are donig online - is to use your points tracker religiously - track everything you eat and that means weigh and measure EVERYTHING.

But I am a bit concerned about your question. I DO hope you don't currently hve a goal of 18 points per day - that's a pretty low number, and if you've "had weight issues" all your life, pretty hard to manage. If you are an online member, use the Points Calculator in the left-hand column to find the values of foods you eat. Since I am frequently without a computer, I have several nutrition books with calorie values and I have my points calculator and a slide calculator they used to offer.

You can look up food points using the Points Tracker or the Find & Explore links also in the left-hand column

Have you taken the points quiz online? On the toolbar online, you'll want to look at "Your Plan" and then "Select Your Daily Points Target". Also very helpful is the section "Staying on the Plan"

As you lose weight, you'll be satisfied with less and less but you may also get much more active and so gain activity points - or jsut get used to eating what you need rather than what you want to eat.

> AND AM I THE ONLY ONE CONFUSED BY THE POINT STYSTEM

Online members usually have problems getting the whole plan as well as meeting members. When we attend meetings, each week, they introduce a new topic and build on what you learn the previous week. A logical progression. Online, you get all the information but you may choose to read something that doesn't make sense until you have learned something else.

You may want to consider buying the Complete Food Companion under the Marketplace tab online - it details a lot of the values for foods most people have. Another suggestion that is useful to some is to take masknig tape or scotch tape and tape over containers of items you usually have in the house and write on it the points values for the items - so you'll get a cereal box and have the values on the side.

Or you can find a food list to print out by going to the Help section (link right next to the Log Out link in the upper right. Follow this path:

Help
General Website Questions
Weight Watchers Online & Etools
Do you have a printable list

Otherwise, a specific question about the plan might be easier, although we are limited in our ability to help since the plan is copyrighted or trademarked or whatever - it's all there online, just maybe a bit confusing.

Read a section a day under "your plan" - write down things just like you're taking notes in class, even right down questions you have or things that don't make sense. Then ask either here or on the WW boards.

Oh, and Welcome!

Robin
You can increase your screen size so that you can see better without writing
in all caps, which is very difficult to read. On a mailing list, most people
will simply skip over an email in all caps.

Weight Watchers is a POINTS system. You won't count calories. You need to go
online onto the journal and look the foods you eat up. We can't tell you how
the program runs, legally. We can help you when you have specific questions,
but you have to read online for the program.

Tara,
How close are you to reaching your goal weight and becoming a lifetime member? If you're close and can find a way to stick it out, once you become lifetime, your meetings and etools are free as long as you stay within a certain weight limit.
Good luck to you in all you're going through.
Kim

Oh my gosh Carol, I can't imagine any restaurant putting canned bean
sprouts on a sandwich.. like for chinese food? <vbg>. Yikes....

we just did a quick trip to Flagstaff and I bought some good fruit
leather type thing at Targets... Archer, Organic Pomeganate real
fruit strip for 1 point each. a great thing to keep in your purse,
maybe with a few raw amonds for those minutes when you are starving...

I also got some whole gain goldfish and was weighing them into
bags for individuals treats while my husband went thru our mail.... I
was using that great $50 WW scale and it was funny... it would read 2
points, and I add a few more, 2 points add a few more, and then 1
more and it read 3 points... I told my husband I felt like a drug
dealer getting my stash ready and he said, that's probably the type
of scale they use.... <vbg>. It was certainly sensitive enough..
anyone else have one of this type? I love that you can put in your
favorite foods and it also has a list of 200 items already programed
in.. Sorry I sound like an advertisment for WW's scale! <vbg>

We went to my favorite restaruant in Flagstaff for my favorite
green chile burrito and green salad with THE BEST blue cheese
dressing and I have 1/2 of burrito left - so fruit for dinner will
still put me within my daily points...

Yes, Listmom Lyn, thanks for starting this list and overseeing
it.. I know that's time consuming... I've only been on for two days
and have already gotten great information.

Kim, welcome, I'm new too and it's a great list... good luck
with WW... We CAN DO IT!

I love my new WW scale. I love the fact that the points are already
calculated into their database, so you aren't having to use but the
one tool for looking up your points. Like last night, I made grilled
tuna steaks, weighed mine out (you put the plate on the scale, zero it
out, then add your food), looked up fish, scrolled down to tuna
cooked, hit points and was able to just enter it into my online
tracker without taking the weight and going to the tracker to enter
that and get the points. This will make things even easier.

I can hardly wait for my weigh in on Tuesday. Not only have I really
done well this week, I have been more active now that my heel/plantar
faciitis is improving. Not enough to report yet, but little things
like hanging wash out rather than using the dryer, and yesterday I
went to pick my daughter up at the airport and had to park quite far
out. I was glad I had my cane with me though, as my heel was quite
tender by the time I made it back to the car. I had been to the
Farmers' Market and walked some there, too. Little things like that
which I was unable to do when I first started WW and my heel pain was
so bad.

By the way, went to see Julie & Julia yesterday. It was great-came
away hungry! I know you aren't supposed to take food into a theater,
but they really offer nothing a person on WW can eat. So, I popped
some of the 94% fat free popcorn before I went and put it in a plastic
bag in my purse (I usually carry a very small purse, but pulled out
one of my larger ones and all I had in it was my money, drivers'
license and the popcorn). I did buy a bottle of water there ($3.79 for
a 20 oz bottle of water; I know they make their money on concession,
but I so feel I am getting ripped off). Even that irked me, as I've
been trying so hard to get away from plastic bottles by using
refillable drink containers when I go out somewhere and putting my own
water, tea, etc. in it. In this heat, my husband and I will fill one
half full with water, freeze it, then fill it up with water before we
leave the house.

But the movie was excellent, and I recommend it to everyone. They do
use the "F-word" a couple times, but other than that, it would have
been rated G.

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to your group and thought I'd introduce myself.  My name is Laurie; I'm (cough) 55 years old, and have been married to the same great guy for 35 years now. We have 2  married children and 4 terrific grandchildren.

I've just joined Weight Watchers on-line yesterday but it's not my first time.  My weight 249/117/135.  Everything was going really well for me last year on WW but I had to quit because my son lost his job because his work place shut down,  and then he lost his house and had to move in our home with his  wife and 2 children.   We now live like the Waltons. It was ruff at first getting use to extra people in the house but everything has settled down now, so I can get back to work losing this weight again.

I guess that's it.  I hope I didn't bore you to much.

You really sound ready to go.  I think many of us come upon bumps in the weight loss road. Mine happened when my first granson was born with chanllenges and we needed to support him and his parents. It took me awhile (9yrs) but I'm back on track...I know you can do it.

Annie, your very welcome! I love that you are re-inventing. It makes you walk a bit differently doesn't it? LOL... That's so kewl that you donated your hair and congrats on getting into that XL shirt! I know how ya feel. I just fell out of having to buy women's size clothes myself. It's a wonderful thing!

I changed my hair as well. I cut it really short and spikey and no longer color it so it is salt and peppah. I've had tons of complements on it, however I think it is my attitude that has changed and made for the comments more than my appearance. I like myself again! And yup, up-to-date is how I feel too! Good for you! We are starting our lives over again at a great age!

Thank you, Deb! I AM determined this time. Too many cute clothes in my skinny closet! I normally wear a 2X or sometimes a 3X, but yesterday, I put on an XL t-shirt and it fit me! I had to kinda stretch it out just a bit, but it looked good on me, it was pretty with embroidered flowers on it, and several of my friends saw me in it and said how pretty I looked yesterday! That was sure an upper! I've had my waist-length hair cut off short, in a more modern style, with the ends flipped out here and there, and pushed behind my ears, and it looks cute - and all my friends say I look so up-to-date, rather than that long hair I had. I love the new look, though it takes some styling, not much, but some. So I am updating my look. I am beginning to realize that I was dressing frumpy and my hair was frumpy - it was thinning due to age and medication I am on, plus tangles that just got pulled out, and so it wasn't a glorious thing of long hair - it was stringy looking. Now with the short hair, it looks thicker (I use a volumizer on it), and with more cute clothes, I am feeling good. All of that is motivation. But it started with the haircut. And I donated my hair to the Cancer Society, so that felt good to do. Some child will get a baseball cap with a ponytail attached of my hair. My hubbie looks at me and smiles and says I look so cute with my short hair, which he never expected. I am looking forward to doing a little bit of shopping for some smaller clothes, not too many, because I still have a lot of weight to lose, but when my jeans are sliding off of me, time to get new jeans! LOL !!!!! This time, at WW, I WILL succeed. I am determined to take it off and keep it off, and am developing habits that will help me do that. There is one lady at my meetings who has reached goal and is now going through that 6-week process of figuring out how many points she can have a day and keep her weight steady. Right now they have determined that she can eat 18 points per day (she is short and petite and an older woman). So I tried something for a few days. I tried what it would be like to be on a 20 point diet for a day, in case that is what mine comes down to, and it wasn't that hard, but boy you do have to watch everything, and plan ahead for dinner before you eat breakfast. I'm starting to add the exercise in daily with walking in the morning. Building up how far I walk a little more each week.
So, I look forward to knowing you too, Deb, and celebrating with you also!
Annie

Laura, there is one thing that you aren't addressing here. It's living. Living period! Not just a joyful life, but living! If you continue down the road that you were on you won't......plain and simple. If you continue with us and WW odds are that you will extend your life and even begin to enjoy it again. Yes, it is a slower process using the program. But it is establishing a "lifestyle" not a diet. A way of living healthy, and hopefully happy and long. As you lose you will be able to move more and more and you will begin to really enjoy yourself and your life.

Good for you for trying to rationalize but please also include the positive optimism of life again!

Huge hugs, Deb

Subject: [Serious-Weight-Watchers] The scale; was Disappointed..Marsha

This scale thing is a real problem for me that I wish to solve. In the past I became so terrorized by the scale and unexplained weight gain, I stopped going to WW at all. Each & every time I think I could do this by myself, I fall on my face. Then, I didn't have to worry about the scale, but the mirror and my clothes easily told me I was out of control.

I gained 1 lb. the week before and it took every bit of my will to go to the meeting this week. I lost that lb again and another .6lb. At my weight that could really leave me discouraged. I have been arguing inside myself about this issue.

If I wasn't going to ww, I'd very likely start eating badly again eventually. Right now, my blood sugar is balanced with no low bs attacks [I don't have diabetes, I have hypoglycemia- a baffling experience during most weight loss programs]. Right now, I am eating healthfully and joyously with good tasting food that satisfies me in more than one way. Right now, I AM loosing weight no matter how slowly this is. Right now, I have ceased starving myself or binging crazily.

I will live this time period whether I am on WW or not. So, in some ways, it doesn't matter how slowly my aging post-menopausal body lets go of the weight. Because that is outside of my control. And again, if I wasn't in WW as a really committed member, I'd be gaining weight instead. This way, I will at least someday get there.

That isn't an easy attitude for me to adopt, even if it is reality. With 200 lbs still to lose, it could take me over 4 years. But I've spend most of my life beating up on my body, following really crazy plans of eating, in that elusive goal of a normal sized body. So, I have to stop trying to force my body into doing what my emotions want. Instead, I have to nurture my body
with good food, healthy exercise and activity, and all the other healthy living behaviors.

So this is my take on the weight loss issue. The weight will come off my body in its own time.
I can only take care of my body, follow ww to the best of my ability each day, and learn to accept the weight loss process as it is. Or I can fight it like I've always done, and end up harming myself with food again.

Laura

AMEN to both of you!
Most diet plans, WWers included, put far too much emphasis on the scale.
Why? Because that is TRULY what most people want. We want to weigh less. But
we do need to focus on overall health. The weight loss will follow in its
time.

That's why I get so disturbed when I read people talk about how exercise
doesn't help, or eating healthy doesn't matter. It so DOES matter! Not that
we have to be perfect, but we do have to strive for the best we can do on
any given day to make healthy choices and move our bodies.

I like to mix cereals. This is my go to breakfast:
1 cup puffed wheat (1 pt)
1/2 cup Kashi Strawberry fields cereal (1 pt)
1/2 cup fat free vanilla almond milk (20 calories, so actually 0 pts)
1 tbs PB2 (.5 pt)

This is quite filling. I'm a bulk eater and always try to make the most of
my calories/points. I eat this almost every day. If I need more fuel (I'm
going to bootcamp or a heavy workout) I'll just do a cup of Strawberry
fields instead of 1/2 and add a sliced banana.
