I'm coming *back* out of lurkdom! I am DONE with my internship, and done with my summer course work. I had a job interview yesterday for a part time job with a local domestic violence agency, so I'm crossing my fingers for that.
My fall classes start on Thursday.
I gained a bunch of weight during this move, but I'm back on track with losing it thankfully I'm back on plan, and Monday I plan on getting back to the gym and I'm excited about that.
How is everyone doing here??

3. Again McDonald's- McSkillet Burrito Meal
4. Went too long without eating, was starving, got a Bavarian Cream

When I fall off the wagon I get my MP3 player and take a walk even if its just around my own yard for 45 mins. It will burn off any excess I ate in points and makes me feel very proactive. i totally believe in WALKING! its works wonders and its free :)

We have to decide what is more important the instant gratification with all the negative feelings afterward or the weight loss....
Exactly! You want a slogan.......there is one for you. Not to mention that you say that you are struggling with bills right now Faye. McDonald's is NOT cheap! Perhaps you and your DD could learn to cook some healthier, cost friendly meals together instead of the tempting McD's. My Granddaughters get a huge kick out of helping make even salads. I'm sure she would too and you would be helping each other out.

Hi Faye & all,
I'm still working on an answer for stress. It's one of my major triggers, too. The best I can do is say that exercise helps but 1) it's not a panacea and 2) sometimes, regardless of what optimistic leaders, MDs and friends say, you CAN'T find 30 minutes free in a day.
However, here's how I handle fast food. Maybe it will work for you. I tell myself I have to refrigerate it for an hour first. Let me tell you, there is nothing more disgusting than a cold McDonald's french fry. Having tried one (once), when I feel like fast food is the answer I remember that cold, gray, tasteless grease stick that's hiding inside a french fry.
California already has a chain restaurant nutritional information law, and there is a national law in the works. Those nutritional info sheets are eye openers. For instance, at Chevy's I learned that the chicken fajitas are a lower calorie choice than the portabello/asparagus fajitas. Who knew? I would have always assumed the vegetarian choice was a lot better, but no. The fast food numbers are enough to make you pause.
I also tell myself that advertisements are made by people who think they're smarter than I am and who want my money. This works for all sorts of things, not only food. Do I need a new cell phone or is it just that the ads make me want a new cell phone?
Best wishes in dealing with the stress! You're right that it affects all of us, but learning to deal with it is my goal this time around and I think possibly the greatest lifestyle change we can take away from this experience.
Nancy

The list of products and WW points - disclaimer about it not being endorsed by WW or guaranteed accurate - is at
http://deals.families.com/trader-joes-weight-watchers-points,t12436
Another WW member gives a sjort list and comments on the store
http://www0.epinions.com/content_3458244740
There is a huge list of trader Joes items at
http://caloriecount.about.com/cc/search.php?search_type=foods&searchpro=trader+joes&x=17&y=13
I live in Texas - the closest Trader Joe's is in New Mexico - I've been. I will definitely go again but there are some things I'm able to find in local stores. I do have to say is the prices are great! So if you can pick up your items at a trader joe's, please plan your shopping around them.
From a WW perspective, it also gives you a great jumpstart with so many items that feel so healthy for you but taste pretty darn good.
My suggestions - make a shopping list for your grocery shopping, trying to plan as many meals as possible. I obviously had to pick up items and travel a long distance so shelf stable items were my one indulgence plus the Chicken Chili Lime Burgers that are in the frozen case. I also picked up a Chicken frozen dish that I can't recall the name of and isn't in any of the lists I saw - just chicken, peppers, onions (I think), and a sauce - I could eat it as a main dish or on a sandwich,
Also on my list was the frozen oatmeal - I have been able to find another offering of frozen oatmeal locally - and BTW, even if you don't normally eat oatmeal, it's a great meal and not like the instant oatmeal at all, so pick up some. Also on my list were the frozen rices - they were too bulky so I decided to leave them there.
I had a list about a page and a half printed and organized it by category - salad dressings together, soups together, frozen items together. Then looked at each one and wrote down points values - do a search of the whole site on the Weight Watchers web site and you'll come across a lot of suggestions.
Even with all this preparation, I somehow missed the boxed kung pao noodles, which are on the list. You can find comparable products in other stores but remember that Trader Joes is pretty cheap when you can buy there.
The one hing I regret is the cat cookies - great cookies but they come in a large container and I'm not much of a cookie eater - so I portioned out the cookies into individual serving pouches and gave the container - mostly full - to a cousin who runs a child care. So if anything, think about the serving size - Trader Joes has some great WW food but count the points and decide how much of your points budget you want to use - so cookies are great but I don't build meals around them and try to eat fruit for snacks.
There are some Ginger Cookies in a smaller package that are 2 cookies 50/1/0 that are awesome. These I kept and froze. So as far as using the products from Trader Joes, you use them like regular items. Trader Joes isn't a huge store and lacks some items that you would normally find - say a wide variety of paper products or soft drinks. They don't carry national brands unless they're pretty wholesome so you'll find only their own brand and a few others there.
Can't beat the selection and price on what they do carry. And a great way to get excited about a week of healthy meals.

Trader Joes is wonderful.. You will need to check labels and take your point
calculator. Most of their products are healthy, organic and there prices
are great. If you want better nutrious healthy food shop there. I wish I
had one close.

Thanks for the links and comments. You will hate me: the closest TJ's to me is... well, I can almost see it out my kitchen window, but there are trees in the way. It's an easy bike ride and a somewhat tiring walk there and back (but YEAH, I usually drive, even though my bike is fitted for grocery shopping).
I've sometimes been disappointed: some of the products formulated simply to avoid HFCS are waaaaay too sweet for me. That's okay, it helps me to avoid them.
We get frozen shrimp there about once a week for a quick and healthy dinner. I make my own cocktail sauce after becoming disgusted at the high amounts of HFCS in the store brands. Sometimes it's the first thing on the label! Cocktail sauce is tomato paste, water, vinegar, horseradish, and sweeten it to taste. Don't start with catsup. I'll have to check TJs and see if they have a better cocktail sauce than the mainline grocery stores.
We buy our eggs there because the mainline grocery store sells them in styro, and TJs uses recyclable egg containers. (I need eggs this morning, too... I feel a shopping spree coming on.) Last week our leader provided a recipe for Thai noodle salad that used a TJ sauce I haven't seen on any of the lists. So a bottle of that's on my list.
Thanks again for the excellent links!

I buy this awesome grain mix (cous cous, orzo, and lentils) there, along with great sauces that I can't buy on base at the grocery store.

Oh, Faye, here's a hug. Sounds like you've had a touch couple of days and glad you made it through okay. Here's a few thoughts for you to mull over.
> 1. One of those new McDonald's Angus Mushroom Melts
> 2. McDonald's again- Big Mac value meal!
> 3. Again McDonald's- McSkillet Burrito Meal
Okay, I'm a big fan of McDonald's and can't imagine my life without ever eating there again. One of the things about McDonalds - you can usually find one and they're consistent with what they do, so you're not at the mercy of eating on the road. And I'm not going to say you should jsut get the salad or a yogurt parfait or the grilled chicken - sometimes only red meat does it for me.
But I recall eating there with a friend once - and now is a time to examine your McDonald's visits. Are they like mine? They're pretty fast, consistent, a reliable offering? And they are pretty clean - my relatives say I stop at every McDonald's on the way somewhere but usually I use their bathrooms - usually clean, location pretty much the same so you don't wander around an have to ask.
And they have small children there in the playground, families eating together, not a haven for couples who are courting or older couples or professionals - pretty much a cross section of our life.
Maybe it's just the food. Why McDonald's? Why not Burger King or Wendy's or Subway? What makes McDonald's resonate for you? Maybe your daughter wanted to go there?
Which started my story - was eating there with a friend, hose daughter wanted to play on the playground. A kid's meal for the daughter and my friend and I just talking. Daughter wanted to play on the playground, my friend said you have to eat more before you can - my thoughts were that it's a pretty terrible thing to want your kid to eat when they're not hungry, followed by the thought that McDonald's has it probably figured to a ounce how much a normal person eats to get full and offers just a little more - make you feel you've gotten a good deal, don't leave hungry, don't feel you had a LOT too much.
That also means you get more than you really need. So here are two challenges for you. You see I practice going to McDonald's a lot and not getting anything - it started with my road trips and convenient bathrooms. And then became just picking up their fruit and yogurt plates for my mother and really giving them to her - and not eating them myself. But I seriously want you to think about McDonald's and next time you pass one, just walk in the door, maybe look at the menu, maybe not, maybe go to the bathroom, and walk out. For no other reason than you can.
But also, next time you go to mCDonald's realize that they're very good at building a culture - they've built a busines being the best at what they do - value and a product. Look at their marketing "It could be that third pound of 100% Angus Beef. Or maybe it's those rich, sautéed mushrooms. Or the tangy Swiss cheese. But chances are, it's everything".
Beef is cheap right now - demand is down 10% over last year and it's not hard to buy a pound of really good hamburger - so how can a burger place make money? Emphasizing taste combinations and quality meat - Angus - and size. They're buying good quality meat and selling their preparation. Doesn't mean you have to eat it all, does it?
So appreciate it - it's what you wanted to eat - you accept what they're offering? So walk right up to the counter and ask for one of those new McDonald's Angus Mushroom Melts - plus a plastic knife. Or one of those Big Mac value meals plus a knife. Or one of those ...
You get it. After all, you're not making any committment now - you can always eat every bit of it. But then there's that post that pointed out McDonald's adds just a little more than you need. So maybe you want to cut off a bite or two and offer it to your daughter - or Bob! Maybe you'd be just as happy with half of it. I use the excuse of having dogs and usually eat half of my burger - I have three dogs and they could eat the whole thing.
It's always your choice - not McDonald's - how much a serving size is. So how much is your serving size for the burgers? For the Big Mac, I have found I'm really happy taking off the center bread and one of the patties- maybe I just like the tang of the sauce plus bite of onions and pickles.
Which now brings up your other part of dividing your food - giving some of it away or heck throwing it out! Look at what you've cut off - which part do you want? It may be you cut off a good piece and want to eat that piece. What do you like best about the Angus burgers? Maybe you want more onions next time? Or maybe the bread is really a bit much and you want more of the meat taste? Do you want to eat the inside of the burgers - without the sloping sides? - or the outside with less meat? After all, you can eat the whole thing - it's all yours - don't you want to eat the best parts first?
So can you go into McDonald's and choose your own serving size? go ahead, get whatever you want - just remember that McDonald's just gave you more than you will be full on. I never let them decide how hungry I am. Are you taking ownership of how hungry you are?

I know nothing about you or your dad, but two things that I'm curious about. I'm not even sure you put these two poitns in your post. First thing I though was that it can be a problem if skills aren't taught to children in a family setting. So right next to how stressed you are about various things is that your dad can't even call you because he's stressed!
If you're taught to deal with stress when you're young in a certain manner, you have no chocie but to continue the pattern. All very well to know it's destructive or not helping, but after all, what else is there? There are even pages of how to deal with stress but just reading them is stressful! So can you think of someone in your life that manages stress well? Honestly, sometimes it seems like everyone we know has some little quirks - they go quiet, they blow up over everything else but what they're stressed about, they eat, they watch TV, they avoid situations.
But maybe you're stressing about things that you feel are out of your control? Bob's travel situation, the daughter's sore throat ... So while it seems simple, have you tried to separate out what you can do and what you can't do? You can't help Bob get the vehicle fixed, but maybe you can think of another way to help - was he stranded and did he maybe need you to reserve a room at a motel? Maybe offer to call a friend nearby - or even run through a list to find there are no friends nearby. Call his boss? What was he worried about - did you ask him - can you take care of something for him he coudn't take care of? Your daugher's throat - take her temperature? Check her gums? Call a friend for some advice? Call the school to find out if anything's been passed around there?
It can lower stress just to identify an action accoiated with the situation. It might not help the problem, but it will lower stress - so you don't feel helpless and out of control.
And realize that you'll always stress about something. Think if you had tons of money and your eating was right on target, everything would be fine? Well, you'd still worry bout the people you love, wouldn't you? You want to protect them and keep them from harm, do things for them, and you'd still stress over not being able to do enough? It's they way helping and caring people are.
You could change - live on a deserted island with no friends - or you can just apperciate that you do care and wnt the best for them. If you can't do something physically - pick up medicine, call a boss, do an errand - you can offer what you can emotionally - tell them you're glad they let you know, let them know you're there for them, whatever else you can offer.
So when your dad called to let you know he was stressed and couldn't call ... I hope you might think, "Well, I come by it naturally, it's the way my family has always coped. My father doesn't know any other way so he still streses over simple things and lets them get him off track. I want to break that cycle and teach my daughter better habits - so I can teach her to see patterns and better ways of dealing with stress. Some of them won't work. But I'm glad he called to let me know what was going on. And next time it happens I'll remember to let him know that I'm glad he called and that I'm glad he's thinking about me and sorry to hear he was so stressed by his company. Is there any way I could help? Maybe by my example of coping, he'll start to learn better ways of coping with stress ... and not stress me out as much!"
> So I need to learn how to deal with stress
Even that is a daunting task - there are way too many people who offer a blithe, oh, I do this. But what you deal over and how you deal with it depends on you. What works for me may not work for you - I love running. An aunt has discovered scrapbooking and getting lost in that. Hot baths do nothing for me. It's not a sign of weakness to be stressed - or even to react to stress. All you want is to identify and change the ways you deal with it.
> and not
> ruin all my progress
> because of it.
That's a very positive thought! And it might get easier over time but never be simple for you. I even thought about adding a part about food having power but you've already identified it's your reaction to stress that has the power and food is just the mechanism.
Love and kisses and another hug for you.

7. Zero Point Soup Recipe
Posted by: "theromancemedic" girlffmedic@aol.com theromancemedic
Date: Sat Aug 29, 2009 12:52 pm ((PDT))
Hello everyone! I am looking for a zero point soup recipe that was in one of the first books given to me when I first joined WW about 6 or 7 years ago. I remember it having alot of canned veggies and even canned zucchini in tomato sauce. I can't find it anywhere! I have tried some of the recipes that I have found, but they just don't compare to the original one. If you know what I'm talking about, please send it to me if you have it. Thanks!

8a. Introducing myself
Posted by: "Nancy Miller" njhattaway@yahoo.com njhattaway
Date: Sat Aug 29, 2009 12:53 pm ((PDT))
Hi, all. My name is Nancy, I'm from California, and I just started WW for the third or fourth time. My memory is shot, but I think there was a time way back when. My last go-round was about 2000 or so; I lost 35# and got overwhelmed by stressors in my life and just had a melt-down. I also kept having negative reactions to my leader. I don't know if they were projecting from my frustration or if she really is insensitive, etc, but it did keep me from returning for almost a decade.
Over the past two years, I've made some changes that I wanted in place before I started WW again. I saw a psychologist for the better part of a year (and the better part of $5000). I never had the re$ource$ to do that before and I realize it is not something everyone can afford, but I will say that I'm a different person for the experience. She knows that at some point she may get a call from me; if I start to melt down again that's my fall-back plan.
I also joined a health club and have tried to get into a regular schedule there. I start, then the semester starts (I'm a college instructor), then the semester gets hairy, then I fall off at the gym. But I keep going back, which is good.
Finally, last week I rejoined Weight Watchers. I'm not all starry-eyed and enthusiastic this time around. I think that doesn't help you get through the plateaus and frustrating weeks, which I know are in the future. Funny that I think about those and not about the good weeks (the psychologist would make hummy noises at this point and wait for me to "get" it). My mood at the start is more cautiously optimistic, with a good dose of dogged determination.
On my last attempts, I lost 30 or 35 pounds, then had difficulties and quit, so I know that will be a time when I have to be careful and surround myself with support and optimism. I've made some other changes: I chose a different leader, one recommended by my MD who is also in WW. I signed up for the Monthly Pass, which includes e-Tools. The online component was a must-have for me as I dislike little paper tracking booklets with a passion. It's fun tracking online, though. It's really easy to look up foods or enter your own, and occasionally you find little glitches that are hilarious, such as they count 10 minutes of savasana as 1 activity point. For those who don't know, that's a yoga pose where you lie on the mat in total relaxation.
My final change was joining this group. I'm looking forward to getting to know you all!

Hi, Nancy and welcome! You are a college instructor, I am a college

classes away from my Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
I agree, I love the online tools, especially the recipe builder.

Subject: [Serious-Weight-Watchers] Introducing myself
Hi, all. My name is Nancy, I'm from California, and I just started WW for
the third or fourth time. My memory is shot, but I think there was a time
way back when. My last go-round was about 2000 or so; I lost 35# and got
overwhelmed by stressors in my life and just had a melt-down. I also kept
having negative reactions to my leader. I don't know if they were projecting
from my frustration or if she really is insensitive, etc, but it did keep me
from returning for almost a decade.
Over the past two years, I've made some changes that I wanted in place
before I started WW again. I saw a psychologist for the better part of a
year (and the better part of $5000). I never had the re$ource$ to do that
before and I realize it is not something everyone can afford, but I will say
that I'm a different person for the experience. She knows that at some point
she may get a call from me; if I start to melt down again that's my
fall-back plan.
I also joined a health club and have tried to get into a regular schedule
there. I start, then the semester starts (I'm a college instructor), then
the semester gets hairy, then I fall off at the gym. But I keep going back,
which is good.
Finally, last week I rejoined Weight Watchers. I'm not all starry-eyed and
enthusiastic this time around. I think that doesn't help you get through the
plateaus and frustrating weeks, which I know are in the future. Funny that I
think about those and not about the good weeks (the psychologist would make
hummy noises at this point and wait for me to "get" it). My mood at the
start is more cautiously optimistic, with a good dose of dogged
determination.
On my last attempts, I lost 30 or 35 pounds, then had difficulties and quit,
so I know that will be a time when I have to be careful and surround myself
with support and optimism. I've made some other changes: I chose a different
leader, one recommended by my MD who is also in WW. I signed up for the
Monthly Pass, which includes e-Tools. The online component was a must-have
for me as I dislike little paper tracking booklets with a passion. It's fun
tracking online, though. It's really easy to look up foods or enter your
own, and occasionally you find little glitches that are hilarious, such as
they count 10 minutes of savasana as 1 activity point. For those who don't
know, that's a yoga pose where you lie on the mat in total relaxation.
My final change was joining this group. I'm looking forward to getting to
know you all!
Nancy
