Faye,
I LOVE both pluots AND grapples, but grapples are VERY hard to find(so
are pluots). The only place I've ever seen them was at Sam's Club and
that was a few years ago. Wish I could find them somewhere else since
I dont' belong to Sam's now, as my kids ADORED them. They both like
the pluots as well.

Hi faye- I get the grapples at wegmans here. They're not a mix of those two though. It's misleading.. They are apples with grape flavoring inserted under the skin.. They are good, but 5 dollars for 4 apples. Bit pricey!!

Have you heard of pluotts? It is a fruit that is a plum and apricot bar
mixed together. So good. I love them!

Our team leader said there is a fruit called a grapple that is grapes and
apples mixed together but I haven't found that anywhere yet.

Thanks Claudia, it sure was. And you will do it too! Focus on that......little steps at a time. Start moving! I don't run marathons, I don't do the gym..but I do walk as many days as possible through my neighborhood or local mall or walmart trying to get in 45 minutes a day. I started with only 15! I thought it was gonna kill me, but I knew if I kept at it I would soon be back to pumping the steps out. My 45 minutes averages almost 2.5 miles now and getting further about every other week. I used to do 4 miles a day about 10 years ago.. I'm shootin for that by October.

Just set your mind to living healthy now Claudia. You will feel better in no time! Stay focused!! We will help.

Hugs, Deb

That is so awesome! I am going to get back in shape again, I just know
I am. I want to be able to do the same things you did on your
vacation.

The vacation sounded great, and with ALL THOSE STEPS you probably had
a lot of extra activity points you never even touched!!!

Claudia you are on the right track! "They" have always said that slowly eating is key.. I understand completely as I used to shove things in as quickly as possible since I only had 15 min. for lunch at work. It made me eat everything fast. That and the fact that one of my twins was always hovering over to take the dishes away so they could get them washed and be on their way out the door, lol... but I usually graze over my meals now. Putting down my fork between bites most of the time. That's a hard one to get used to. I never thought of it as a "hand" fixation before. Perhaps you are on to something. I usually have my one hand around my mouse when I sit down, lol... no nibble bite marks on it as yet.

I also do the individual plastic bag portions. It's much cheaper than the 100 cal packs and the variety is much larger too! I find the snack size bags work just fine for most of my treats.

Have you tried laughing cow yet? Or flatouts?

Hugs, Deb

I have found a lot of my food addiction is just the desire to have
something in my hands when doing things like watching TV, reading,
etc. I know I shouldn't be like that, but, I am. So, I keep celery,
bell peppers, etc. handy, as well as the snack packs of 94% fat free
popcorn. I keep Baked Lays in the house, with individual portions
already done up in plastic bags. Especially with snack foods, I make
myself eat them slowly, a bite of a potato chip, or a kernel of pop
corn at a time. Believe me, this is NOT how I used to eat.

Granted, I've only been on the program for five weeks, so I may not be
"on to" all the "tricks" yet (being able to trick my body into being
satisfied), and it may be different when I have been on it as long as
you have-harder to be satisfied with tricking your body. But right
now, this is what is working for me.

But I too, need to get over that addiction of doing something with my
hands.

I haven't posted in awhile but I still check in here everyday. I have
been doing WW since Oct and have lost 78 lbs. I feel great but I still
have about 70 more to go. In the last month I really lost my
motivation. I have found that in the past when I get to the weight I
am now, I just give up. I don't want to quit cause I want to lose more
but I just can't get over my food addiction again. I have done good
this week so far eating and walking, but I am back to wanting the junk
food. I do know that I can't have it in my house. I think I just need
to find out why I have this addiction and solve it once and for all,
or I will never continue my journey and keep the weight off.

Does anyone have advice on this? I also think I need to start my B-12
shots again, cause those gave me energy and supposidly boosted my
metabolism.

Hi Tammy,
I am taking B12 shots once a month, and I do think they help me. As far as cravings and temptations, I've discovered that what I really want is a TASTE of the "off-limits" food. So I take ONE chip out of the bag and sit down with it and eat it in tiny bites, chewing it well, like it was the last chip on earth, and savoring every moment of that one chip, and that does it for me. I am satisfied. I know what chips taste like now, and I don't need anymore. I get cravings for pretzels, and I don't even particularly LIKE pretzels. But I bought a bag of them, and took one stick out, and closed the bag up, and then sat here in the den, muted the TV, and ate that stick - it took me almost 10 minutes to eat it, taking it off in tiny bites, and really really chewing it up good to get every taste of it I could get out of it. Then I was satisfied. I didn't need to fill up my tummy with pretzels. I just wanted a TASTE of them. This little trick helps with things like mashed potatoes, and other higher calorie foods. Just try to take a taste of them, but really concentrate on that taste. Don't talk to other people while chewing the food, don't have the TV blaring, be totally into the taste of the food. And you'll find that you are satisfied with that one taste. You achieve an almost Zen-like situation with yourself and that piece of food. Imagine that you are eating the last of that food on planet Earth, and how would you eat it - you certainly wouldn't gobble it down, you'd enjoy that piece slowly and with reverence. Try it and see if it helps. I know it does for me.
Good luck and you've done a heckuva job on your weight loss now - don't ruin your hard work!

I really feel being able to plan in some "junk food" is one of the
reasons why this plan works for so many people, and will work for me.
Not only are there so many healthier alternatives out there now then
even 5 years ago (not to mention 35 years ago, the first time I was on
WW), but WW plans to let you overindulge each week and not feel guilty
with those extra points. It's a mental thing. In the past, you "blew"
your diet with a bowl of ice cream or piece of cake you would think
"What's the use, I am pond scum, I have no will-power, so I might as
well give up!" Now with those extra 35 points each week (and more if
you earn Activity Points) you don't have to beat yourself up mentally
if you have a weakness. Psychologically, that is a huge factor.

All this is my humble opinion, anyway!

Regarding the junk food. You can have it provided you plan for it. I
have Ice cream made with Splenda almost every day--2 points per 1/2
cup. I also buy a mixed bag of Baked Chips--pretzels, Ruffles,
Cheetos, Doritos---from WalMart. 2 or 3 points each. So I just count
them along with the rest of my points for the day.

At pur meeting yesterday we talked about the foods that helped us stay on plan....The change in plans over the year has given us all kinds of food that help us stay on. I personally love. Can you all help me come up with some other words instead of "junk food" for the foods that support my weight loss.

food. I do know that I can't have it in my house. I think I just need
to find out why I have this addiction and solve it once and for all,
or I will never continue my journey and keep the weight off.

Subject: [Serious-Weight-Watchers] My intro

Hi! I'm Annie, and am 56 years old, and ready to get to my goal weight this time at WW. I did it once before, in 1987, but put the weight back on, plus some. This time, I'm ready to change my lifestyle, so that I can stay thin. I have 88 pounds to lose, and I just had my third weigh-in, and have lost 10.8 pounds so far. I feel like I can do it this time. I saved all my favorite "skinny" clothes, and am looking forward to being able to wear them again. My husband is naturally thin and so it is hard to cook for us. Also he is not vegetarian, and I am. So we have a double whammy. I am taking it one day at a time, and keep thinking maybe I should just give up being a vegetarian, so I can cook one meal, low cal, low fat, that we can both eat, but I just gag at the idea of eating meat. I just can't do it. So we have to do strange things to get dinner going for us. Sometimes just resorting to frozen meals heated in the microwave. There are plenty of vegetarian Weight Watcher frozen dinners, and they are good, and portion controlled. Then my husband can get a lasagna from Stouffers and it will fill him up. Last night, I made Cuban black beans over rice, which we could both eat, and I just controlled my portion sizes, and did fine. My husband refuses to eat anything with tofu or tempeh or TVP in it. He'll eat any vegetables I make, or potatoes or rice, but nothing that smacks of "health food". So, I just keep trying. I plan on starting a walking program tomorrow morning, to add to my plan. I don't want my metabolism to slow down, due to the lesser amount of food I am eating.

This time, on WW, I WILL do it, and do it for good. I do NOT want to grow old and be heavy. I figure I can get to my goal by Christmas of next year. I hope earlier than that, but to be realistic, I am setting my goal for Christmas of 2010.

I look forward to hearing from you all and exchanging ideas, tips and recipes.

I use those spoons all of the time for both myself and DH. He was shocked that a cup was so much! LOL.. I measure as much as I can. It's really easy to slip in more points and not even be aware of it.

I went to the Weight Watchers' store today. I wanted to get a digital
scale for food, and I also bought the serving spoons that are
pre-measured (1 cup spoon, ½ cup spoon and ¼ cup ladle). That is about
the smartest thing anyone has ever done!

Hi B! I most often have oatmeal for breakfast as it stays with me longest and is 2 pts the way that I make it. With a half of a banana. An eggbeater quesadilla with ff tortillas is a good filling breakfast or lunch too. You can add veggies or low fat cheeses. I keep prepared taco meat, both 96/4 beef and chicken in the freezer and add some of that at times also. Throw some shredded lettuce, salsa, even a serving of ff sour cream and eat with a knife and fork! You have a meal deal! Think of foods that you love in regular form and transform them to fit your points. Also move! You must move somehow and add APs. That is the way to increase your points and get you into the "right" way of doing things for the rest of your life.

I'm not much of a breakfast eater, so I usually eat a Kashi TLC Chewy
Granola Bar (2 points) (My favorite is the Dark Mocha Almond) or a
Quaker Chewy Oat and Granola Bar with Fiber and Omega 3 (3 points), a
banana and glass of skim milk or Fiber One Yogurt (I think that is
Yoplait). For lunch I will have a sandwich with the Wonder Sour Dough
Lo-Cal bread and either tuna or several slices of deli-sliced lunch
meat and low fat (you could substitute fat free) cheese. That should
give you about half of your points for your dinner. Then I will add a
dill pickle on the side, tomato and lettuce on the salad, fat free
mayo, maybe some carrots, celery, cucumbers. Sometimes I will eat a
Lean Cuisine for lunch.

Breakfast: I usually have 1/2 cup frozen stir fry vegetables, an egg, sometimes a slice of canadian bacon and then have 1/2 a grapefruit.

Lunch: My current favorite is a veggie burger (no bun and with a slice of cheese on top) and 1 cup vegetable soup.

I would be interested, if you could kindly share your recipe for your 2
point oatmeal. :)[?][?][?][?]

I love oatmeal for breakfast, too, but I use 1/2 cup dry oats, 1/3 cup dry
ff milk. I think that is 4 points. With fruit it is 5 points.

I find soft boiled eggs with weight watcher toast a satisfying breakfast
that sticks with me.

1 egg and one slice of ww bread = 2 1/2 points, 2 eggs with 2 slices of ww
bread = 5 points.

I also love Arnold's buns toasted and teasopoon of jam or jelly or peanut butter on.

8a. Would love helpful strategies!
Posted by: "Laura Coleman" laurabcoleman@yahoo.com laurabcoleman
Date: Thu Aug 6, 2009 12:01 pm ((PDT))

Hello,

I went out of town to fulfill a service commitment. A number of things made it difficult. Some food related, some health related & some simply weight related. Now I would like to participate in a retreat that is coming up with many women who have some interests similar to mine.

I have been examining what made the trip out of town so difficult for me so as to become more adaptive in the future. I thought if I mentioned some of the difficulties I had, some of you might already have solved this in your life.

The big change is that I am feeling better physically. This is the best
I have felt since I had lymphoma 5 years ago. So I am rejoining the
world of the living and am much more actively involved in my life.

I remain morbidly obese and my weight loss is slow and even unsteady while I am on this journey.

I will be 64 this month and find that I am not anywhere near as adaptive as I was at younger ages.

As near as I can see, here are the difficulties I had:

1. Making certain I have my proper snacks so as to keep my erratic blood sugar under control.

2. No fridge or microwave available to bring my own stuff.

3. Food choices that did not include plan friendly vegetarian foods.

4. Food choices that were not appealing and didn't taste all that good either leaving me disappointed and unsatisfied.

5. Unavoidable walking that was too much for my still heavy body leaving me with a painfully swollen leg and foot.

6. General out of sorts feelings from being away from home, out of my own routine and unable to care for myself in the same ways as usually.

I really look forward to hearing your experiences, knowledge and weight loss strategies.

Laura

HI Laura. Having just come back from Disney World and gained *6.1
lbs!* I totally understand your frustration, although part of it was
TOM for me too(i'm already back down to 2 lbs above where I was when we
left). I left here with all good intentions of packing
sandwhiches(with tuna or egg salad to keep the points down) every day
and going back to the car to eat====did that happen? NO. Almost every
day it POURED at lunchtime, and of course, who wants to run to/from the
car in the rain?(way far away?) THen the choices they had were
somewhat healthy, but I still ate some things that weren't good for me.
Walking was great every day, but still not enough to negate all the
extra calories. Even drinking about 100 ozs of water a day didn't
help!(and yes, that was accurate). We were all out of sorts and just
ate what looked good or was convenient, and thus had to buy a SECOND
cooler to bring home all the extra healthy stuff we bought at Super
Target there! We had taken a small cooler with some stuff and knew we
were gonna shop for the frozen stuff there, just never thought we
woudln't eat at least HALF of it! We won't have to grocery shop for
awhile, at least not for most things.

---The big change is that I am feeling better physically. This is the

world

THis is a GREAT change in you that you're feeling better, so that's
something to celebrate. While you're still morbidly obese, you can
take the steps of being more active to help work on that. I know it's
easier than it sounds, but do what you can. Slow weight loss is ok,
I've lost 50.1 lbs in just over 2 years on WW, I know where you're
coming from, but it's a great feeling when you're a smaller size, even
if it takes a long time.

Your age certainly isn't helping, but it CAN be done. I understand not
being adaptable, as my MIL turns 60 in November and had to be VERY
careful when she was at Disney with us. She took my son(4.5) with her
and stayed in the shadier/kiddie areas while we went on the big rides.
She also took him to the hotel room instead of going to the pool with
us in the evening(too hot!) Another thing I noticed ALOT of people
doing at all the parks and here at home, too, was using those electric
scooters to get around if the walking was too much. Is that an option
for you? Maybe walk part of the day and used the motorized scooter
part of the day?

1. Making certain I have my proper snacks so as to keep my erratic
blood sugar under control.

This is CRITICAL to being as healthy as possible and not having your
energy plummet during the day! I don't have a blood sugar problem, but
carrying snacks is something I've *ALWAYS* done, especially when
travelling. I usually carry granola bars or fruit, or if we have a
cooler, I'll carry yogurt. At Disney, they actually had some decent
snacks, of course I didn't always eat those!(My fault!)

2. No fridge or microwave available to bring my own stuff.
This definitely makes life complicated! I know you said you're a
vegetarian, do you eat tuna? Perhaps take some cans of tuna and small
packets of mayo??? Sorry I'm not a vegetarian, so can't help you there!

4. Food choices that were not appealing and didn't taste all that good
either leaving me disappointed and unsatisfied.
Can you get the names of places you might be able to eat at ahead of
time so you can get an idea of what might be available and
point-friendly? I know alot of national chain restaurants have menus
and NI online now.

5. Unavoidable walking that was too much for my still heavy body
leaving me with a painfully swollen leg and foot.
See my suggestion above about using the electric scooter?

Good luck with your next adventure. We're going to NJ(from DE) to see
my mom on Saturday and we'll have some of the same issues, so I"m
trying to come up with a better plan and STICK to it this time!

Melissa

30 mins of swimming laps and 25 mins of treadmill(mostly walking) at
the YMCA that I FINALLY joined! Felt good to be back in a gym,
although my time was limited to both my kids being with me and only
being able to use their daycare for 1.5 hours(by the time I changed
between the pool and the workout room, I didn't have time for more). I
will have to go back tomorrow and do some more workouts in the exercise
room.
Have a great evening!

I saw a show about crocs awhile back...their biggest problem was that they had a great product, and decided to ride the wave of success so they built a huge addition to their plant (multi millions of dollars) added some new products which flopped and then the wave was over and they have not recouped the millions spent to upgrade....they did mention that with today's economy...most people are not going to invest in another 40.00 pair when the one they have will last for ever..I love them

thanks for the welcome Faye..

what's the brand of your bread that is only 1 point for two
slices.. I can't find any at my local stores? I think you mentioned
it in the cheese sandwich discussion..... Are any of you on
Hungrygirl.com or have her recipe books? I'm also a great fan of
David Zinczenko's books "Eat this, Not that".. great information in
them and a great source for getting the most healthy packaged foods
or restaurant foods....

Galen, I think you had him on your web site in a video with
Ellen. Now that was interesting information about regular bacon and
turkey bacon.. that they are about the same except turkey bacon has a
TON of sodium in it... Yeah for still being able to eat regular bacon?

I do weigh every day... I know we are all different.. but when I
weigh and see that I am down I am less disappointed if the WW scales
don't show that... and it also helps me stay on track.. Like
yesterday and this morning I weight exactly the same which is the
lowest I have in years.... so that will help me stay on track today...

One of my friends introduced me to frozen ravioli from Safeway..
you can have as many as 9 of some types, like the portabello mushroom
stuffed ones with just a bit of sauce over them.... she just cooks
them and then heats in microwave with a little olive oil and herbs..
but I like the red sauce... so I've cooked some up and have even
frozen them in old WW plates, vaccum sealed them and they are good to
take out of the freezer for lunch or dinners.. the ones I make up are
6 points for the ravioli and 2 points for the sauce because I got
some with gorgenzola cheese in it.. I'll correct that mistake next
