Hi Kerri,

I'm all for devil's advocate - it's one of my favorite ways of discussing
and exploring differing opinions. Rudeness does not enter the equation.
*smiles*

As I stated, SO MANY PEOPE I KNOW, are playing at weight loss. Those people
I'm referring to are in my life and I interact with them every day. I was
not speaking for anyone in this or any other group. For example, one friend
begged and begged her doctor for diet pills. She finally gave in and gave
her a prescription for one month. Do you think she's actually cut back on
anything? No, she hasn't. Today she had bacon, eggs and a bagel for
breakfast, big mac & fries for lunch, and is planning to go out for prime
rib dinner tonight. This menu is very typical of her days. Has she started
any sort of exercise at all? No. To me, this sort of attitude is playing.
I tried to be her cheerleader ... have discussed all sorts of health issues,
ww's, calories, etc. I told her that she could come and exercise with me,
brought her low-cal recipes books, told her all about ANYTHING I could
think of that would be motivating, but she just continues to play. She
claims to all that she is "cutting back" yet she does no such thing. In
fact, she admitted the other that it's all "just too hard."

These are the kind of attitudes and behaviors that I find frustrating. It's
been my experience that this occurs more often than not. Do I hold myself
above anyone else? Absolutely not! The most I can hope is that I am a role
model for anyone who wants to change their lifestyle. The fact is, either
you dedicate yourself and do the work, or just don't talk about it. It's
very disheartening to hear someone talk as if they are walking the walk when
the reality is completely different.

Now, if someone approached me and they were sincerely wanting to change and
asked for my help - I'd jump in and be their cheerleader and be as
enthusiastic as possible. However to do so with people who obviously don't
have any desire is basically a waste of my time & breath. There are many
people that DO sincerely want help & encouragement (such as anyone who joins
a group) and I'd rather dedicate my efforts to those who I may actually
help. And of course by helping others, I help myself as well.

Furthermore, many times when you try to "spread enthusiasm" to those who
don't want to , or aren't ready to hear it ... it just backfires and makes
many dig their heels in the sand. I think each person really has to come to
the place in lives when they are ready to hear the message and do the work
for themselves. To that end, I'd rather be in a group where members are
serious about their weight loss goals and lifestyles. Whining and crying
are not going to get me to my goal and to better health. Only hard work,
perseverance, and will power will do that for me.

Hugs,

Babette

I am playing the devils advocate here, not to b e rude but I think we have
to support everyone, even those that are "playing" with weight loss. Can any
of us honestly say that this is the first time we have lost weight or tried
to lose weight or hit goal the first time? I have been at goal for about 4
years, but "played" at weight loss more times than I can count. We need to
spread the enthusiasm to all because maybe then it will help them out to
where they want to continue on their weight loss journey. Just my opinion

I don't see anything wrong with what she said. How many of us know people that say, "I need to lose the weight" but then gorge themselves on high-fat sugar-laden goodies. I used to be one of them. I was playing with weight loss, and I am in no way offended by what she says about it. NOW... I'm dedicated and serious about losing the weight. I'm no longer playing... I'm changing.

And hey, aren't we all here to get along and not call someone on the carpet about something petty?

Babette - In July, instead of diet pills, my doctor "prescribed" our local
hospital's Weight Loss Program when I was feeling there was no way you could
lose the weight on my own (I was hoping he'd give me pills). The program
costs $450 for a four month commitment. He wants to see me at the end of
October to see my progress. I made the appointment for the hospital
program, but they couldn't get me in for a month. In the mean time, I
decide that WW requires just as much a commitment and it was A LOT cheaper.
So, I started going back to WW AGAIN. decided to make the commitment to
THAT. Six weeks later, I'm 14 pounds lighter. I have 50 more pounds to go
and hoping by next summer I'll be almost there.

No matter which route you take, diet pills, WW or another route. The only
way it will work is if you make the commitment. Glad I didn't go with the
pills, it's just one more thing that you have to worry about what is really
going into your body. now they are coming out with possible health problems
with Alli. I think I'll just stick with learning how to eat right, it's a
lot cheaper and a lot healthier in the long run. Glad I have a doctor that
does not give into the medicated way of dieting.

Hi Kelley,

While I agree with you ... there is also the flip side to that equation. So
many patients go to their doctors demanding a "magic bullet". I have a
friend here who is 5 feet even, 350 pounds and harassed her doctor for 6
months for a diet pill. The doctor finally caved and gave it to her ... for
one month only. Since she's gotten the pill she's not changed her eating
one bit. I'm sure when she goes back and the doctor refuses her the next
prescription it's all going to be the doctor's fault that she doesn't lose
weight!

I agree with Lyn.

One thing most people don't understand is that supplements are not
tested nor regulated by the FDA. We think they are safe because a
drugstore sells them, but they may not be. Rarely have there been any
long term studies, and nothing remotely close to the testing that FDA
approval requires.

Exercise is my therapy and stress reliever as well.

I agree a great part of our losing weight is to help our children and grand
children to eat healthy. I have 3 children who were young when I made
lifetime 35 yrs ago and I am so proud of the way that they eat and also feed
their famlies...They are not food Nazi's they eat everything in
moderation....Our children are our future lets keep them healthy as we lose
weight.

Mmm ...egg rolls are yum, but yeah quite pointy. I think the only way you
could really figure out the points for the oil is if you cooked one
individually and could see how much oil it took to cook one. Unless of
course you deep fry them. Good luck, I have no idea where to find that info
if so.

Subject: [Serious-Weight-Watchers] Not my best day yesterday

I made my egg rolls yesterday for the first time since I have been on
Weight Watchers and there is a good reason for that. I make the
world's best egg rolls, and they are addictive. I think if you gave my
husband his choice of any of the food I make (which is extensive) egg
rolls would be his favorite.

The egg rolls themselves aren't too bad.lean ground beef, cabbage,
carrots, celery, bell peppers, bean sprouts.but then you fry them..my
daughter and I tried baking some, ala Hungry Girl recipe, but I
couldn't deal with them baked. So I added an extra two points to the
calculation I made for the egg roll (1 point for the ground beef,
which is minimal in each egg roll, and 1 point for the wrapper) for
the grease it was fried in. Still not too bad at four points a piece,
but I ate three of them, along with pepper steak and rice.

Do you all think the two extra points was about right for the added
grease? Too much? Too little?

I went over my daily points, but the first time this week (week starts
on Tuesdays) I dipped into my weekly points, so I'm OK.

I just know that egg rolls are going to have to be one of those
special meals I don't make often..because the leftover egg rolls are
calling me..so far I've ignored them!

The next special meal I make for my husband that I can't resist will
be German. He says if I will cook him one of these "special" meals
once a month, he won't say anything about all the broiled, grilled,
etc., foods we eat the rest of the time!!! I don't see too many places
I can trim down Jaegarschnitzel and spatzle..One of the reasons we
don't go to our favorite lunch place any more-it's German and there
isn't a darn thing on the menu that wouldn't take up over half of my
daily points!

Hey everyone!

My name is Shannon and I'm a 31 year old loser. Yep, you heard me! I'm losing the weight and I'm dedicated to keeping it off. :D

I'm a work-at-home mom to a beautiful almost-4-year-old daughter. I do licensed child care for a living, dabble in digital scrapbooking on the side, like to sew, scrapbook, make beaded pretties and enjoy church functions. :)

I joined weight watchers 1-1/2 weeks ago, was down 6.8 pounds on my first WI (YAY!) and am up to 2-mile walks a day. I started WW at my heaviest of 239, and have a goal of 160 or so.

Um, I think that's all the important stuff. lol Anything else you wanna know, just ask! I'm an open book.

9a. Soy Milk Question
Posted by: "Faye Ridpath" ispgypsy@gmail.com fayefromtampa
Date: Sun Aug 30, 2009 9:50 pm ((PDT))

Hi everyone!

I know it's hard to describe a taste because of course everyone has their
own taste buds. For instance I *hate* tomatoes unless they are cooked or
stewed like in a soup and I also like catsup (go figure) but my husband and
daughter love them.

But maybe someone can help me anyway...

When I'm being good and OP the one indulgance I allow myself is one cup of
chocolate milk every day when I take my meds.

I noticed when I was getting some other things I needed that chocolate soy
milk is only 70 calories where even the non fat chocolate milk I normally
get (Over the Moon) is 150 calories. So I was thinking 1/2 the calories is
even better but I didn't know if I'd like soy milk. And I didn't want it to
go to waste if I didn't. Bob (hubby) said I should have got it cuz if it's
chocolate flavored I probably wouldn't notice what kind of milk it was but I
wasn't sure.

Any thoughts...?

Melissa,

You are so right. Wow 54 points for that meal! And the funny thing is, I
also love Checkers (for some of you that may be Rally's) but I can't find NI
for them *anywhere*, not even their own website so I never eat there. I
always only splurge if I can find the points for it and I have the points to
spare. So I don't know what happened to me this week where I had McDonald's
not once but *three* times! I should have chosen BK because I was able to
eat there on like 3 or 4 points- a salad with lite dressing and a grilled
chicken without the bread. And told Marcella chicken nuggets are chicken
nuggets. All she wanted was the Happy Meal more than anything so she could
get a toy. Should have just bought her a Hot Wheels car or something (she's
a tomboy lol) and like you said some frozen nuggets and then ate my own
thing and she'd get the same thing for cheaper and healthier.

Sue,

I love my leader too! She is the best. She even provided her e-mail addy in
case we have questions in between meetings and don't feel we can wait till
the meeting. And unless she is out of town, she is very prompt in responding
to an e-mail.

The team leader at the WW meeting I used to go to was also great and the
only reasons I switched were my schedule changed and the one I go to now is
also much closer to me (practically just around the corner) then the one I
went to before.

It has helped me too, Deb. I am happy to say I have been back on the wagon
since Saturday. Well most of Friday too but I still had one slip up on
Friday in which I ate a bavarian cream filled long john. But hopefully I am
back on track to stay now!

Claudia,

You know until I read this post I have been totally stumped about why lately
I am very unhappy with the clothes selections at Wal-Mart whenever I shop
there when I used to *always* be able to find things I loved. Then you
mentioned White Stag and I remembered I was always buying their product line
and now that I think about it we don't have those here anymore either.

Just like Target also used to have a line of clothes I loved called Esleep
(mostly lounge around, PJ's) and they don't have them anymore that I know
of.

And OMG their employees(Wal-Mart) at least here have really gotten rude.
Marcella had to come to work with me while Bob was in VA and she said her
feet really hurt and she was worried about school and the shoes she was
wearing because she was going to have PE that day. So I said let's run to
Wal-Mart on the way home and try to find you a new pair of sneakers. So
we're looking and everything we're trying on doesn't fit her so I said
"Here's a size 5 maybe that will fit you." And an employee must have
overheard me cuz she said "No way will that fit her! uh uh! That is a size 5
toddler. Nope won't fit her." And so I said "Ok, then where are shoes that
will fit her?" and she said "Nope nothing" and walked away! I was like ok so
you have toddlers and adults and nothing in between???

Melissa,

I thought maybe I just wasn't eating my produce fast enough when that
happened to me. Cuz sometimes hubby shops and my stuff gets buried behind
what he brought home and so I forget about it. If it's not in plain sight, I
tend to forget it's there.

Kelly,

I know what you mean. When I used to work at Wal-Mart, we could take
exchanges even without a receipt but I tried to go to Wal-Mart to exchange a
blouse that didn't fit but I didn't have the receipt so they wouldn't do it.
I could understand if I wanted my money back without a receipt but if I'm
exchanging something I'm obviously not trying to get something for nothing
or pulling a fast one, you know?
