Once you've lost the weight, you need to learn how to keep it off. Most people do gain the weight back after they lose it, because they go right back to their old habits. As you get closer to your goal weight, you will need to start easing into the lifestyle that you will continue for the rest of your life. You will need to remember to keep cutting out the biggest sources of blood sugar spikes, including sugar, white flour, white rice, and potatoes. You will need to continue consuming plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy seafood, and other lean proteins. And you will need to continue getting some exercise.
Always remember that if you don't continue the lifestyle, you are doomed to repeat everything you've just been through. You'll have to deal with the pain of being overweight, the embarrassment you feel when you go out in public, the difficulty losing the weight, the aches, pains, and discomfort of being overweight, and all of those other issues.
That's something you don't ever want to have to go through again, right?
Never let go of the things you're feeling right now. Never forget the struggle. Never forget the pain. Never, ever forget.
Once you let go, once you get past it and you move on, you cannot forget. If you allow yourself to forget what it was like, you'll be back on that road to obesity before you know it.
It's a good idea to keep a lot of photos of yourself before you lost the weight. Keep a journal of how difficult your dieting is. Write notes in it about how horrible you feel, how embarrassed you are, how your life is miserable. Keep all of this together and look at it regularly.
Yes, it will be painful to dredge up those memories of when you were so unhealthy, but it will help you stay healthy. The emotional pain you feel will be nothing compared to what your friends and family would feel if they lost you because you had a heart attack or stroke due to obesity, or the pain you would feel if you gained all of the weight back.
Keep eating healthily. Keep exercising. Keep living the healthiest life possible.
Never, ever forget

Another Amen! No more of that pain again. Of being confined to the house because I was too ashamed to go out. Of struggling to take a nice, hot, leisurely bath. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh... not to mention having fun with my grandkids! And having hope to see them all graduate and get married and maybe even be a great grandma now. Where last year that was definitely not a possibility. Something as simple as using the restroom was such a struggle. And the thought of getting onto a plane to go somewhere with my husband for our 25th was horrifying! It's too late for that celebration. It's come and gone. But we now celebrate every day liking ourselves for living healthy and trying to be around for ourselves and our family as long as possible.
That is why I weigh myself every day to remind myself of my commitment. If I see a gain of any denomination I am more dedicated that day. I have so much to be thankful for now. WW and all of you are at the top of the list.

Deb, you hit two things on the list I made for myself of reasons I was
to lose weight, aside from being healthier and looking better. Being
able to go on a plane without asking for the seat belt extender, and
being able to take a tub bath again. I have too difficult a time
getting up and down in the tub due to my weight that I haven't taken
one in years. I really miss that. Other things are being able to buy a
lawn chair that doesn't have to hold up to 350 pounds (hard to find),
being able to sit in the college auditorium seats without being in
pain (literally! They are SOOOOO small). There are more and the list
continues to grow.
Having a hard day today, and I don't know why. All I can think of is
food...I've tried all the tricks-water, brushing my teeth, taking a
walk (still can't walk far due to plantar facitis, but I walked around
in the back yard and played with the doggies), etc. Going to go work
on my Business Statistics homework. Maybe if I concentrate on that. So
far, after two meals, I still have half my points left, but still I
just want to EAT. I think I'll go clean up some celery heart and break
open a new jar of salsa while I am doing homework.

Claudia, sorry that you are having a difficult day. I keep sugar free mints for the nibbles if I want something sweet. Or I cut up an apple and keep it in a ziplock. I grab a slice when I get the growlies. Whatever you munch on do it slooooooooooooowly. Control it. You can do this! And you are gonna love that bath!

I just saw that Kerri. And her explanation, I thought was a good one. And
very common, sadly, with many that we wish we could help. I rode a train
with a beautiful woman who prolly weighed all of 350 to 400 pounds. She ate
from the time that she sat in that seat, two of them by the way, until I got
off of the train 4 hours later. I'm serious! The entire time! While it was
very disconcerting cause I hadn't been on WW for all that long and still
struggling at times, I had to listen to her rattling package after package
of yummy looking treats. But my biggest reaction? Wanting to go hug her and
tell her that she is killing herself! So often we see people that are obese
and seem so sad. I know, I was one of them. So when they are wanting to help
themselves, it's wonderful and natural to support them and want the same for
them. But when they consistently slip day after day, hour after hour, and
blame everything or everyone but themselves it does get frustrating. I have
a neighbor who does the same thing. She is vicious in her blame of something
else that is causing her to keep gaining instead of losing when she is
supposed to be OP. You want to help but after a while you want to shake them
and yell......"it's not the reason!" That is what I meant and what I
continue to mean. She is playing at weight loss all the while totally off
the wagon and eating anything that she wants and blaming our wonderful
leader for her failure. FRUSTRATING! At least she does weigh in..... but
then disrupts because of her pouting about not losing enough or any.
I thought this was what Babette was saying and I still stand by my reply to
her. Amen Sistah! It is sad and yes......frustrating.

Spreading enthusiasm is what we want to do Kerri...... not sure what you are
saying. Trying to be encouraging and enthusiastic is what we want to be.
It's frustrating when we do and the ones that you are doing it to don't seem
to be ready or get it. Again, and again.. not saying on here. Saying in life
in general.
I have read from the owners, mods here that this group doesn't celebrate
going off program. Hence the serious title. If I am wrong then I stand
corrected and well........wrong. The enthusiasm includes suggestions on how
to stay OP to be successful. And when we are, then of course we are
enthusiastic in our celebrations with everyone that is! How does one "play"
with weight loss?

I am playing the devils advocate here, not to b e rude but I think we have
to support everyone, even those that are "playing" with weight loss. Can any
of us honestly say that this is the first time we have lost weight or tried
to lose weight or hit goal the first time? I have been at goal for about 4
years, but "played" at weight loss more times than I can count. We need to
spread the enthusiasm to all because maybe then it will help them out to
where they want to continue on their weight loss journey. Just my opinion

Hi Claudia,
I'm a digital Scrapbook designer. More specifically I'm a "designer's
designer" and create commercial use items for designers, photographer,
gamers, etc to use in their creations. However, I also do some personal
use designs as well. Of course, regular scrapers also purchase my designs
to their personal projects. If you're interested you can check my stuff out

Really Pointless?
I saw that article, and had some immediate reactions to it. First, it was an
attractive cover story. I don't usually read newsmagazines and I picked that
one right up and read the article right away. Masterful choice for a cover!
As I read, I kept wondering on what planet Cloud has been living on all his
life (there's a pun in there somewhere). I don't know what person in their
right mind thinks that exercise burns enough calories to make a dent in
weight, unless you also change your dietary habits. Look, you're at the gym,
on the fancy treadmill or stairstepper or elliptical or stationary bike.
They all tell you how many calories you've burned. 50... 100... 500? Anyone
can tell you how many calories are in a can of soda and a bag of chips.
250+, and that's if the chips are baked. So who can ever use one of those
machines and think it's making up for a huge slice of chocolate layer cake,
or a single Big Mac? It doesn't add up and never has. I don't know why Cloud
didn't realize that until now. Is he THAT bad at simple arithmetic?
Exercise is sooooooo beneficial. When I've lost weight in previous attempts,
every time I was somewhat successful I was exercising regularly. When I
stopped exercising (and stopped being aware of what I ate), I gained weight.
So if it's not "burning calories" that's important, it has to be something
else. Personally, I think it is a combination of building lean muscle and
reducing depression and anxiety. But when I've lost weight before, it's
always required BOTH intake control and exercising. One or the other didn't
cut it. Ever.
I don't know about wanting to eat more after exercise. Except for swimming,
I find a good sweaty workout is an appetite depressant. Maybe I'm weird. (I
could eat a banquet after swimming, that much is true.) Building muscle and
boosting your metabolism, trimming up your "look" and relieving depression,
increasing flexibility, cardiovascular health and respiratory capacity.
What's not to love?
When I read the article in Time, I groaned. Some people will read this and
say, "Studies show I shouldn't exercise." I think Time did such a disservice
in pitching what could have been a great piece in such a sensational,
misleading way. I expected better of them but I guess it's all about
circulation and readership, not about journalistic integrity.

That's it exactly ... commitment is the MOST important thing we can do for
ourselves!! I'm also glad you have a good doctor - they are hard to find!

Babette - In July, instead of diet pills, my doctor "prescribed" our local
hospital's Weight Loss Program when I was feeling there was no way you could
lose the weight on my own (I was hoping he'd give me pills). The program
costs $450 for a four month commitment. He wants to see me at the end of
October to see my progress. I made the appointment for the hospital
program, but they couldn't get me in for a month. In the mean time, I
decide that WW requires just as much a commitment and it was A LOT cheaper.
So, I started going back to WW AGAIN. decided to make the commitment to
THAT. Six weeks later, I'm 14 pounds lighter. I have 50 more pounds to go
and hoping by next summer I'll be almost there.
No matter which route you take, diet pills, WW or another route. The only
way it will work is if you make the commitment. Glad I didn't go with the
pills, it's just one more thing that you have to worry about what is really
going into your body. now they are coming out with possible health problems
with Alli. I think I'll just stick with learning how to eat right, it's a
lot cheaper and a lot healthier in the long run. Glad I have a doctor that
does not give into the medicated way of dieting.

While I agree with you ... there is also the flip side to that equation. So
many patients go to their doctors demanding a "magic bullet". I have a
friend here who is 5 feet even, 350 pounds and harassed her doctor for 6
months for a diet pill. The doctor finally caved and gave it to her ... for
one month only. Since she's gotten the pill she's not changed her eating
one bit. I'm sure when she goes back and the doctor refuses her the next
prescription it's all going to be the doctor's fault that she doesn't lose
weight!

Dittos here from me too - too many doctors just want to give their patients
medications for anything and everything, and sometimes the very best thing
you can do is exercise and eat right. Some foods can be stressors too!

I agree with Lyn.
One thing most people don't understand is that supplements are not
tested nor regulated by the FDA. We think they are safe because a
drugstore sells them, but they may not be. Rarely have there been any
long term studies, and nothing remotely close to the testing that FDA
approval requires.
Exercise is my therapy and stress reliever as well.

Hi Kelley,
While I agree with you ... there is also the flip side to that equation. So
many patients go to their doctors demanding a "magic bullet". I have a
friend here who is 5 feet even, 350 pounds and harassed her doctor for 6
months for a diet pill. The doctor finally caved and gave it to her ... for
one month only. Since she's gotten the pill she's not changed her eating

9. Article: Preparing your weight loss program
Posted by: "LBCreations" lbcreations-designsbybabette@cox.net queen_babette99
Date: Mon Aug 31, 2009 8:17 am ((PDT))
Hi All,
Found this article and thought it made some very good points. Enjoy!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------
Preparing a weight loss program means setting up the conditions that will
make it most easily possible for you to achieve your weight loss goals.
There are numerous important choices to make during the preparation stage,
including the form your diet will take, how much weight you will attempt to
lose, how you will keep yourself motivated to make progress towards your
goals, and how you will monitor your progress.
Understand your motives
An important first step is to examine your motives for wanting to lose
weight. Are they driven by health concerns, by vanity, by shame, by a desire
to move more effortlessly, by a combination of these motives. Do you want to
lose weight for yourself, to please others, or a combination of these
motives. Deciding to make a lifetime commitment to diet and exercise is a
big step. You will be most likely to succeed in such a program if you want
it for yourself and are not merely trying to please other people. Asking
these questions is part of your due diligence necessary to establish that
your motives are solid and will sustain you through the trials and efforts
of weight loss. If you learn that you really don't care that much whether
you lose weight or not, you may not want to invest further time in
developing and committing to a weight loss program as you will be unlikely
to complete it.
Decide how much weight to lose
Having decided to go forward with your planning, you need to choose a
realistic and personally desirable weight loss target goal. It is not
necessary that you lose all the weight you possibly could. Rather, you
should lose the weight you want to lose.
Government scientists have provided guidelines that help you to know what
you should ideally weigh. After figuring out your present Body Mass Index (a
ratio of your weight in pounds, divided by your height in inches squared,
the result multiplied by 703), figure out how much your weight needs to
change in order for you to achieve a BMI between 19 and 25 (the "healthy
weight" range). There is no need for actual calculation, as the appropriate
weight values can be read directly off of a web-accessible chart.
Alternatively, recall the lowest weight you were able to maintain for a
while shortly after reaching the age of 21. This weight is likely to be the
minimum weight you stand a chance of maintaining as an adult.
You will want to temper your weight goal based on your knowledge of how
difficult weight loss has been for you to achieve in the past, and how large
your frame is (larger boned people should weight more than smaller boned
people).
Decide what diet method to use
Do a review of literature describing several popular reducing plans to
decide which one appeals to you best. Keep in mind that all reducing plans
work the same way, by restricting the total number of calories you eat so
that you achieve a negative energy balance. Also keep in mind that the diet
changes you'll need to make are permanent and will not end with you
achieving your weight loss goal. You'll simply have to permanently move to a
more balanced, nutritionally sound and portion controlled diet if you want
to stand a real chance of maintaining your weight loss gains. Choose a
reducing plan that appeals to your taste, needs and resources, and provides
a sound transitional program for moving to a healthy maintenance diet. The
Weight Watchers plan is a very sound choice if you can't think of an
alternative you'd rather pursue.
Optimize your diet choice
Having made a reduction diet choice, use your knowledge of past diet efforts
to customize it so that you are less likely to fail. Think about the things
that trigger you to overeat and generate plans to address these triggers.
For example, if you commonly find yourself snacking while watching
television, plan to have healthy and acceptable snacks (cut carrots,
unbuttered popcorn, etc.) on hand so that you won't blow your diet.
You can also help your diet efforts along by finding ways to fit your diet
choices into your regular routines as much as possible. For example, it is
really easy to substitute spring water or diet soda for sugared soda, or to
substitute low or fat-free dairy products for the higher fat variety.
Similarly, a piece of fresh fruit might take the place of a bag of chips.
Decide your diet pace
There is no need for speed in dieting, and in fact, speed can be dangerous
to your health. A healthy weight loss rate is one or two pounds a week
maximum. Very low calorie diets can be dangerous and the weight loss is
likely to be gained back rapidly when the diet ends. Most people can safely
lose weight on a simple low calorie diet of between 1200 and 1500 calories a
day for women and 1500 and 1800 calories a day for men.
In addition to pacing your weight loss, consider pacing your eating speed
and the amount of food you eat. Learn what a serving of a food is really
supposed to be and begin to measure your food. Serve the food on smaller
plates and eat slowly. Eating slowly will allow you to notice at what point
you feel satiated and satisfied. If you gobble your food you eliminate your
ability to know when you have become full, and end up overeating and feeling
uncomfortable.
Add an exercise program
It's an excellent idea to combine your dietary weight loss efforts with an
exercise program. Exercise is the key to sustained weight management.
Exercise burns excess calories, reduces stress levels and consequent
emotional eating, relaxes the body for better sleep and helps fight mild
anxiety and depression. Moderate to vigorous exercise produces a wonderful
sense of well-being. Pick a type of exercise you find workable (even
enjoyable if possible) and find the time to do it regularly.

I love soy milk. I'd try a small carton and see if you like it. I also like unsweetened almond milk, which comes in chocolate and vanilla, but you have to add splenda or put it in a smoothie.

Hi Faye,
Here are a few comments and suggestions.
1) You lead with tomatoes so I'm going to, too. Do you hate store-bought tomatoes or home-grown tomatoes? The first reaction is normal (grin), the second is a matter of taste. They're completely different. But seriously, it's okay to not like fresh tomatoes. You get lycopene in the stewed, sauced and even catsup.
2) I don't think of chocolate milk as an indulgence, I think of it as being OP, you just have to count it. I drink lactose-free skim milk, and it's quite sweet as it is, so I use a sugar-free chocolate syrup and am trying to get to where I can drink the milk without chocolate (to save the points). The lactose-free stuff just doesn't taste like milk to me.
3) Look for a individual sized package of soy milk and try it out. I don't like it much, but hey, I like tomatoes so you know you can't go by my preferences. :) Make sure the soy milk is calcium fortified.
4) If you are working toward eating a fresh and natural diet, be aware that some soy products may be highly processed and, like corn, is quite likely to be a genetically modified food. That doesn't bother me (or rather, the high processing bothers me a little, and the GMO not at all). At least one major brand of soy milk, Silk, insists on using organic, non-GMO soybeans, so if I were drinking soy milk, I'd look for that brand.
5) Finally, a secret technique: write a company whose products are sold in your area (look for a website address on a product, for Silk it's http://silksoymilk.com), tell them of your hesitation, and I'll bet you they'll send you a coupon to try the product out.
Best,
Nancy in Calif.

Subject: [Serious-Weight-Watchers] Soy Milk Question
Hi everyone!
I know it's hard to describe a taste because of course everyone has their
own taste buds. For instance I *hate* tomatoes unless they are cooked or
stewed like in a soup and I also like catsup (go figure) but my husband and
daughter love them.
But maybe someone can help me anyway...
When I'm being good and OP the one indulgance I allow myself is one cup of
chocolate milk every day when I take my meds.
I noticed when I was getting some other things I needed that chocolate soy
milk is only 70 calories where even the non fat chocolate milk I normally
get (Over the Moon) is 150 calories. So I was thinking 1/2 the calories is
even better but I didn't know if I'd like soy milk. And I didn't want it to
go to waste if I didn't. Bob (hubby) said I should have got it cuz if it's
chocolate flavored I probably wouldn't notice what kind of milk it was but I
wasn't sure.
Any thoughts...?

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of soy milk, whether it's chocolate or vanilla. My favorite for the non-milk milk's would be Rice Milk. Or Almond Milk. The Rice Dream brand is about the same calorie-wise, but the Almond Dream is around 50 calories.

I agree about tomatoes. Some of the fresh ones are just tasteless. I
have found several that are really good, though. There is one that
Sam's sells, that are smaller tomatoes (larger than cherry, though). I
can't remember the name of them. They come on the stem and they have a
flavor that just makes you want to keep eating and eating them.
Then there are grape tomatoes, and sorry, I can't remember the brand,
and we don't have any on hand. But they come in a round, plastic
container that has like a domed top on them.
Finally, any of the tomatoes that are "on the vine," to me, are better
than the other tomatoes you usually buy in the stores.
We are fortunate right now. We have a farmers' market twice a week,
and also a small, independent grocery store that buys from local
farmers.
As far as soy goes-although still slightly controversial, some doctors
and "experts" on hypothyroidism claim that soy products can take away
from how well the thyroid medication works. I was hitting the soy
pretty heavy when I was starting through menopause, but when I read
that I stopped and felt better after I did. I'm still waiting to hear
if they actually find out if there is a problem with the two, but for
a couple times that I got my medication there was a warning on the
insert about it. However, they have since removed that, so I really
don't know.

12. Getting Desperate

Hey guys,
I have been reading everyone's posts and want to say congrats to all those who are having success and keep working at it to those who have hit that bump in the road. Well my bump seems to be turning into a hill and I want to stop it before it becomes a mountain. I was just wondering if someone would sort of be a one on one buddy for me. Keeping me accountable every day by checking in and reporting food intake and exercise. I am more than willing to do the same for someone else. I just need the extra push to keep my weight loss going.
I was doing WW on my own for 4 weeks and lost 4 lbs. but last week I didn't feel well at all so I didn't count for one day. One day turned into two and then that turned into all week. I'm hopefully gonna start being completely strict with the points starting tomorrow, being the first of a new month. My bf is very supportive but also lets me slack at times. I need to completely make this lifestyle change and make myself into a better person.
My goal short term goal is 140 by oct 1st and 130 by my birthday December 12th. At last weight in last week I weighed in 147.7. I'm going to do a weight in and measurements tomorrow.
But please can someone help be my guide!
Thanks all,
Julie
