For those who are asking, I'll look up the recipe over the weekend and I'll post it on Monday.
The reason for using the steel cut oats is the long cooking time. I would imagine that the regular oats would get way too mushy. Steel Cut Oats are fairly easy to find. I've found that the McCann's Irish Oatmeal is expensive. Quaker Oats also makes them. The least expensive are the ones that I find in the "natural" foods section. I think Red Mill makes them, and/or Hodgson's Mill. These usually come in a plastic bag instead of a box. For those of you that have access to Trader Joes or Whole Foods, you can find them there too.

Does anyone have any suggestions for some good free podcasts I can download to take in the car with me? I have an 8 hour drive tomorrow and would like some good stuff to listen to. Health & fitness podcasts would be great. I do have some "This American Life" which is my favorite, but I'm looking for some more variety.

I like "Fitness Rocks"...he is a doc who reviews studies on health and fitness.
Of course, Tory's Journey Fitness ones are great too!

There's my podcast...and they are long because I ramble. LOL!
I also like Six Minutes of Sanity (short, but great ideas), Wait Wait Don't
Tell Me (NPR "quiz" show that is freaking hilarious), Daily Puzzle (NPR word
puzzle show that makes me feel smart...or dumb), Most Emailed Stories (NPR
show on the stories that get emailed out from their website every day, you
find things you never would have thought of listening to).

I'm interested in other weight loss/fitness podcasts myself. Fitness Rocks
is no longer being made, but the old ones are totally awesome. I emailed Dr.
Monte last week to ask what was going on and he's just been busy and is
trying to decide on a new way to go. (I got to know him when he interviewed
me for his show last year. Nice guy!) Otherwise, I haven't had a lot of
success finding great shows, but I know they're out there! (Plus I also
listen to "geek" podcasts since that's what I teach in my "real" job so I
don't have a lot of time.)

2d. Darn plantar faciitis/heel spur--any suggestions?
Posted by: "CLAUDIA" clewing1953@sbcglobal.net clewing1953@sbcglobal.net
Date: Fri Aug 21, 2009 9:33 am ((PDT))

Well, I talked a few weeks ago about the problems I was having with
pain in my heels, and how I got the steroid injection. I've babied my
heel, following the doctor's advice to limit activity on my foot for a
month, and not going barefoot. I am wearing Crocs like he suggested. I
thought everything was better. Wednesday I even planned to go back to
belly dancing, even though it had not been a month yet, and I have to
dance barefoot or socking foot because of the type of floor (the
lessons are in a ballet studio, and it has the cushioned floor for
them; no street shoes allowed!). Earlier in the day though, we went to
Lowes. We went to pick up a couple things, but then did a big walk
through the kitchen cabinet area to decide what we want to do with our
kitchen. [Have decided to start buying the unfinished cabinet pieces
and put in our storage area until we get all we need, then install it
ourselves and have the new counter top put on. Much more economical
than buying it all at once and having it installed.]

Anyway, after walking around so much on the hard floor, my heel was
starting to hurt a little, so I iced it down and didn't go to belly
dance class. Yesterday was my first day of college classes this
semester, and it required quite a bit of walking. Even parking
(relatively) close to the building that both of my classes are in, it
still required a bit of walking, and my classes are one in the morning
and one in the afternoon, so it is twice a day, so I couldn't kill
almost four hours hanging around the building (I live less than two
miles from campus). I even used a cane, which I found when I was
hurting so badly did help.

I came home after my second class in quite a bit of pain. I iced it
down, 10 minutes on, 5 off, for about 90 minutes while I sat and
studied. That, combined with pain meds (I hadn't been needing them, so
had stopped taking NSAIDs, but thinking I should have continued taking
them), and I was able to get up, cook dinner, clean the kitchen, etc.
It is OK this morning.

So, I'm asking for suggestions from Tory or anyone about anything
additional I can do to get this heeled.

Also, once it is heeled, does anyone know of some kind of shoe that
would have a slick bottom (like a ballet slipper) but support that I
could wear for belly dance class. I really am concerned about injuring
it again going barefoot. My instructor is an orthopedic nurse, so I am
going to ask her, too. [I love the fact she is an orthopedic nurse, as
she really makes sure we are standing correct so not to injure our
back, etc.]

This is one exercise I really love and will do without being pushed
into it. So any suggestions would be so appreciated.

I would love to hear if Tory has any advice... But when I had this I got accupuncture for it and the results were amazing! I couldn't put any weigh. On my heel before the treatments but afterwards I went back to my normal activites. Search your area to see if any MDs or DOs offer the service.

it is still weight - your body wouldn't have lost the water weight if you weren't doing something right - and yeah, the first few weeks usually do have higher losses than the rest, but so what...it's still a loss - it's still xxx lbs you AREN'T carrying around - be proud of your loss - you go girl!

Thanks, I do understand 9 lbs in one week is just a beginning.....and that it will subside....I have always looked at the first week as God's way of saying "you can do this, here some help"  I know that 1-2 lbs a week is the average and I know that plateaus will happen....I just wish her words were more like yours....words that encourage and celebrate... all weight loss, because after allwater or fat...either one is a start to something good.  I can see that my "stumbling" across this group was not by accident, it was guided.  Thanks again.....I am going to keep on keeping on.....SMiles

I am so sorry that happened. In trying to encourage others, she crushed
those of you just beginning. People always say it is water weight you lose
when you first start losing, but I don't believe that is the case. I mean, I
wasn't eating any less salt or drinking any more water, so why should it be
water weight that I lost? I know I have gained water weight on occasion, but
I feel I am retaining fluid at that time. This is just my opinion.

So don't let the leader's comment dissuade you and Lisa. Keep right on doing
what you are doing. Know that the weight loss will level off, and you
probably will hit those plateaus, but you will lose weight.

Ok I went to my meeting..... I lost 9 lbs and my friend lost 12....the topic
of the meeting tonight was plateaus.... ..the hostess or what ever she
is....says.. .."those of you in a plateau....don' t give up....remember the
first few weeks when you lost more weight...well that wasn't real weight it
was water weight and we all know that." Lisa and I were crused....I guess
deep down inside we knew it was water weight but we were so excited only to
have the meeting leader crush us....I keep reminding myself that I don't do
it for her.....I hope the next meetings will be more uplifting.

While it's true you won't lose 9 or 12 pounds each week, the jumping off
week is so helpful to your motivation. My first week I lost 5.2 pounds and
we celebrated and it just put me in a good mental spot to realize that
although this won't happen every week, at least on my way!

I hope your next meeting is more uplifting to you! At least remember the
lovely folks on this group that have been so helpful and supportive. Even
for me, a long time lurker and seldom poster.

Anyway, congrats to you on your loss and for making the decision to change
your lifestyle!

It sounds like you feel like your team leader did you a diservice im
mentioning this but seriously you have to know you won't lose 9 pounds every
week! That would be very unhealthy! I think that's all she was pointing out.

I know you may have been hurt, but the fact is it IS water weight. But it is
IMPORTANT water weight.
When you are living an unhealthy life; overeating, sedentary, overweight,
you end up going into this inflammation "mode" where your body responds to
all of the abuses you're heaping on it (and by "you" I mean all of us who
have done this, which is pretty much all of us, not YOU specifically) with
acute inflammation. This eventually (along with all of the other metabolic
things going on related to it) damages your cells causing those "lifestyle
related illnesses" we all hear so much about; Type II diabetes, heart
disease, etc. It's a lot more complicated than that, but suffice to say
acute inflammation in the body=Very Bad Thing long term because your body is
continually fighting to fix itself while you continue to damage it.

So when you lose a great deal of weight the first week or two of a diet what
you're seeing is some fat, but you're also seeing "water weight". In truth
it's your body saying "Oh thank you SO much for the relief! I can stop
fighting now!" and the inflammation decreases dramatically. So while it's
frustrating to hear "water weight" it is GOOD water weight! You WANT to do
that! It means your body is going into a repair mode and out of the fighting
mode. It's not just "I ate too much salt on my popcorn" water weight.

continually fighting to fix itself while you continue to damage it.

So when you lose a great deal of weight the first week or two of a
diet what
you're seeing is some fat, but you're also seeing "water weight". In
truth
it's your body saying "Oh thank you SO much for the relief! I can stop
fighting now!" and the inflammation decreases dramatically. So while
it's
frustrating to hear "water weight" it is GOOD water weight! You WANT
to do
that! It means your body is going into a repair mode and out of the
fighting
mode. It's not just "I ate too much salt on my popcorn" water weight.

Hi everyone, My name is Cat, I'm 41, single mom of 3 girls and live in Vancouver, BC. I'm really excited about joining this group and look froward to both giving and receiving support as we all pursue our weight loss. I have 50 lbs. to lose and have yo-yoing within about 25 lbs. over the last 5 lbs. BUT this time its forever :)

I just don't know how to get back on track! :-(
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Faye, I know exactly what you mean....it is SO HARD to get back on track,
even after just a day or two. The same thing happened to me last week. My
daughter was visiting, we went to a wonderful scrapbooking convention, and
then out to eat at Chili's afterwards, and then the next day I had an
opportunity to go out with two of my children and their spouses, so of
course, I went, because I don't get to do that very often. I had 3 'bad'
days, but really 'made' myself get back on track on Sunday. I was convinced
I had gained weight, but was glad that a pound still came off.....but, I'm
still worried it may show up this next week. Oh well....
I keep telling myself that's why we have that extra 35 pts. during the week,
and I do use it from time to time. I only get 20 pts. so I have
to.............lol.
I have to keep reminding myself, it's easier to stay on course and continue
to track my points even if I eat something with too many points.
Hi there,
I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Tania and I have been on WW several times and recently now for six weeks. I am totally pumped up about the program and am loving riding the high, because I know from experience it isn't always like that. I am on WW etools and have a blog, my screen name is TANKLAN, if any of you use that. I also have a blog and you can find me at http://babyshoes3.blogspot.com/
I also attend meetings!
I know that you need support from all different avenues and so I am trying to surround myself as much as possible to succeed in my goal for a healthy life. I would love to get to ya'll!
