Hi everyone. I am in the process of trying to decide if WLS is right for me. My PCP recommended it and I have my first consultation with my surgeon on Monday. I am surprised that there isn't more activity in this group. How is everyone doing? Where are you at in the process?

I have checked out several other message boards, but I am looking for a variety of opinions. One in particular seems to be very popular and active, but the website also sells ALOT of expensive products, so I want to make sure I get varied opinions about if all those things are necessary or if it is better to learn to eat regular, everyday food.

Thanks for all your input so the newbies don't have to reinvent the wheel!

Rebecca

I understand about the expensive things. I take children's chewable vitaims, b 12 and b1 and a chewable calcium, and protein shakes. I buy it all at walmart. I had the gastric back in July and have lost abt 60 lbs. I feel better, I know I have lots more to lose. BUt AI am glad I did it.

Hello Rebecca!

I don't often reply to questions, but this one needs an honest opinion.  I believe the best option to fight obesity is to control your diet and exercise without surgery.  Believe me, post-op you will be watching everything you eat and will need to get some exercise.  So, why not do it without surgery?

I had surgery, then had complication 7 years post-op and had another surgery.  Now I have to watch everything I eat and walk as much as I can.  It has been successful, but I also know if I had done this pre-op, I would not have needed any surgery.

Surgery is not the end-all answer to obesity.  Diet and exercise is the answer.  You will end up there anyway!

I suspect this is not the answer you want to hear......but it is the honest truth from someone who has had 2 major surgeries and is now gaining weight because I eat much and do not get enough exercise.  Sounds familiar, huh?

Good luck,

Mike

Hi Mike,

I know that if I could get my brain around the diet and exercise thing I wouldn't need surgery. I guess the point for most people is that clearly without the surgery they haven't been able to make that work for them.

My Dr. said with diet and exercise I could expect to lose, maybe 1/4 of what I need to, only to probably gain it back again. He is convinced the statistics are just plain better after surgery than with diet and exercise alone. Oh how I wish I could do it the simple easy way!

thanks for sharing your situation

Rebecca

Hi Rebecca! Only you can make the decision to have this surgery! Don't let anyone curve your opinions about it. A lot of people are against it.
I had my surgery 4-9-08 nd was the best thing ever. I went from 311 to 197. I am currently having issues and am @ 236 right now. So its easy to gain back. I just need to get my head back in the game. Just need to know how!

HI Becca:

I had my surgery 10/2005.  I lost 120 pounds initially.  Since then I have gained back 30+ pounds. I also have had 2 bleeding ulcers, Vitamin D deficiency, anemia, hyperparathyroidism.  I eat what and when I want and don't exercise.  Just know that if you do this, you would need to be diligent and follow the program.

Now, that I have put a scare into you -- I no longer have high blood pressure, high sugar, sleep apnea...  Would I do it again? Yes, probably, but I would get emotional/psychological counseling and would definitely follow a nutritionalist.  My insurance won't pay for nutritional counseling - so that would be like 150 dollars so I am on my own.

Hello,
I had gastric segmentation in May 2000. THis porcedure is similar to the lap band. I was 301 and lost down to 145. I am currently 177. I was 28 years old and had been heavy my entire life.
This was the best decision that I have ever made. I got my life back. I could play with my kids and enjoy all the ings that being obese stopped me from doing. It is amazing how people treat me now. The prejudice is gone. I am more out going and not embarassed to be around new people.
Now for the bad part. I do have health issues that came as a product of my surgery. I did not have any counciling or support group to help out. I was bulemic. I have asmtha problems, heart palpitations, and severe stomach ulcers. Even with all this, I would never change my decision. I have been encouraged by some of my doctors to have the procedure reversed. This is not an option for me. I never had the will power to lose the weight before and I am sure I wouldnt be able to do it other wise.
I wish you good luck on your decision. Maybe by hearing our poor follow up after surgery, you will make better decisions and not allow yourself to be in the situation some of us are in.
Again, Good Luck!

Hello Rebecca & Mike,
Thanks for your post.
My response is echoing a comment made by Vic (Victoria, the wonderful person who setup this group) that the pouch (as a result of WLS) is only a tool. I also agree with Mike. If you choose surgery, you will need to change the way you eat, start exercising and work on overeating or emotional issues connected to food.
I had a new type of WLS on 3/25/2009. I lost 91 lbs to date. I eat a high protein (at least 80-100 gms per day), low-fat diet and I exercise 6 days per week. I do 50-60 minutes of cardio & on alternate days I either do the rowing machine or the weight machines (for toning & muscle strength). I was laid off in July 2008 and I took time off from consulting after my WLS so I could learn to eat properly (4 small meals per day & 1-2 snacks) and start exercising.
WLS was the BEST thing I ever did for myself. I struggled with all kinds of diets all of my life and when I heard about the clinical trial for my type of WLS I knew it was time. I didn't have to think about it and when I applied twice for the trial (with no results), I wrote a letter to the company sponsoring the trial and was accepted.
Keep in mind that I am a recovering alcoholic and addict plus a compulsive overeater. I was clean & sober for 20 years when I had my WLS yet I still have issues with over-eating.
My suggest Rebecca, is gather all of the information you can (from online, doctors, surgeons, etc) and then make your own decision.

Kelly,
Thanks for sharing your struggles. I realized approx. 3 weeks ago that I was overeating. It wasn't the amount of food I ate but the fact that I ate every 3 hours during the day b/c I was unemployed, home & frustrated over my job search & a personal issue. The way I realized I was overeating was I started "playing" with the same 3-5 lbs, just like before WLS. I would lose, then a few days later gain, etc.
I always track my food (protein, calories, carbs & fiber) however now I'm watching closely and making an effort to be busier. Plus I'm actively interviewing for 3 different positions and my personal issue resolved itself recently.

Hi there!

I'm new to the group, but I'm guessing I might already know some of you
in other-WLS related areas online. :)

I just wanted to drop a quick note to introduce myself. I had gastric
bypass on 3/25/08 and I've since lost almost 170 lbs. I'm also a
professional musician - and the weight loss has DRAMATICALLY changed my
life. I like keeping connected with the community that was so amazingly
supportive during my weight loss journey.

I also host a weekly radio program devoted to WLS topics and music
called "The Backstage Pass Radio Program
<http://www.blogtalkradio.com/divatauniamusic> " it's on every Monday
from 6:00-7:30pm EST at www.backstagepassradio.com
<http://www.backstagepassradio.com> .

This week, I'm giving away TONS of great prizes on air - most
specifically geared towards WLS :

<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uadYItmDhVg>
Some great things I'm giving away:

* Bariatric Advantage <http://www.bariatricadvantage.com> Month
supply of multi-vitamins, calcium, abd B-12

T-shirt
* Kays Naturals <http://www.kaysnaturals.com> sampler pack

Would love to have you tune in and be part of this great growing WLS
community. (You can even chat live with folks during the chat in the

Thanks so much for reading, and I hope you all have a very happy holiday

4. I could use feedback!! (about dealing with excess skin)
Posted by: "lisar320" lisar908@comcast.net lisar320
Date: Sat Dec 12, 2009 6:36 pm ((PST))

Hello friends,
I had a new type of WLS on 3/25/2009. To date I've lost 91 lbs and I'm well on my way to getting to my goal weight of 130-135. I exercise 6 days per week - 50 to 60 minutes of cardio & weight machines/rowing machine to tone & strengthen muscle.
I am starting to see lots of excess skin and in places where the fat is breaking up, jiggly skin all over my body. I hate it! My boyfriend tells me he loves my body and I cannot see how. I do KNOW the weight loss is healthy & I am continuing to following a food & exercise program however I also know that I will ultimately need plastic surgery for the excess skin. (I am currently unemployed w/ no health insurance).
After you lost the weight how did you deal with the excess skin, especially emotionally? (I know some of you had plastic surgery to get rid of the skin & someone posted great info on Abdominoplasty & Breast reduction. ANY thoughts or feedback would be GREATLY appreciated. (I've posted questions to this group before without much response. I know there are many "lurkers" & I'd love to hear from you). I WILL continue to talk about this is but feedback from those who were or are where I'm at is VERY helpful. (FYI, I DO have support b/c my WLS was a clinical trial so I will talk to the group dietician, clinical trial leader & WLS surgeon on 12/18/09 when I go for my 9 month visit plus I have extremely supportive friends).

Thanks in advance for your post!

5. wls decision

Hello,
I have had the surgery twice. In 1998 I was 245 and had a gastric bypass with a sylastric ring. I lost down to 155 but continued to throw up all the time. In March of this year I had a revision to a gastric sleeve and went from 210 to 180. My weight has stabilized and I am happy were I am. I have stopped throwing up and I am able to eat anything just much smaller portions. Even in the beginning when I was throwing up all the time, this surgery changed my life, I have been able to do things with my family, changed my outlook on life, built up my confidence and so much more. The only negative thing I can say is that I have extremely bad acid reflux. Medicine doesnt help, have tried several many times a day. Still working with dr.s on this, I have even gone in and had a stint put in to stretch open the stomach to allow the acid to go down.
I hope that this information helps you make an infomative decision. And best wishes.
