My taste buds changed after surgery.  But I'm 4 months out now and doing great.  I have not tried anything with sugar.  I figure I will either get dumping syndrome, which I do not want to experience, or it won't bother me in which case I could start the "a little bit won't hurt" thing again.  After surgery I couldn't have anything chocolate.  Before surgery I LOVED it.  Now it's good again.  I think the trick is experimentation.  Don't get discouraged.  I now look forward to my protien and change it a bit for variety and have fun finding new ways to make it.

Good luck!!  It's all been good and very much worth it.

Denise

I was out with a friend last night (a very thin friend) and her daughter is a nurse in the cancer ward at Jordan hospital in Boston and she was telling my friend that they have people that have had GBS come in for infusions all the time because of malnutrition. Has anyone here had a serious problem with vitamin deficiency? Needless to say she spent the night telling me to eat right and exercise (thank you very much why didn't you tell me that ages ago??? silly me..) It hasn't swayed my decision in the least but I was curious.
I go thursday to learn about vitamins and the blended diet so this will probably be answered then but do they recommend whey over soy? I think Whey is easier to digest? Also I heard from a friend that had the GBS and she said for me to not stock up on protein drinks because your taste can change? I know everyone is different but I was wondering if anyone had that experience.
I suppose I will just take a deep breath and see what comes my way....
thank you all!
Kristin

I use a protein shake - Designer Whey. It is 100 cals and 15 grams of protein. I make it with skim milk. This adds 45 cals and 4.5 grams of protein. I like the chocolate. THey have strawberry and vanilla, but I haven't tried them. It really tastes good. I get it from Winn Dixie or Publix. Cost ranges from 9-12.50 per container and I think it makes 11 shakes.
Let me know if you try it and if you like it.

I was about 2 weeks out when I started the milk. I still have my protein shakes if I forget to eat or dont get my protein in. I skipped the blended meal stage. I did eat like egg salad. But then again I never had any trouble with my (walnut I called it) new stomach. Nothing has bothered me. From what I have read I am pretty lucky that way.

Jerky is great. The walmart brand is the cheapest and has 13 grams of protein in one once. Yes CHEW it well. But you will learn to chew everything well, it second nature now. If I start a meal with the kids even my small amount I am done at the same time as them eatting normal.

I also recommend before you have surgery that you find a protein shake you like before you go. And drink it ahead of time so your body have a protein build up it will help you heal faster.

I can't imagine not being hungry! I feel like that is such a good thing but really I suppose it isn't. When were you able to start drinking milk? I go this week to learn about the blended meals....that should be interesting. You are four months out? I actually saw some jerky in the store and thought I wonder if I could eat that for protein. You must have to chew chew chew. I will keep in mind the clothes if I get depressed - that is a great idea to just keep some bigger clothes around to remember where you started.

That is an excellent point about keeping your head in the game - the support groups I go to say "if you give what you always give, you will get what you always get" this is a tool not a cure so if you don't do what you are supposed to with supplements, drinking, eating and exercise you are going to end up right where you started.

I appreciate the response!

I do not get hungry. I have to think about my meals. I have skim milk for breakfast I get protein and calcium. I know not everyone can tolerate milk but I have no problem. Chicken or steak for lunch sometimes even jerky all high protein low calorie. And dinner the same thing. But I have to make myself eat. And I always have water with me.

I have not gotten depressed. I might say pissed every once in a while when I look at food and want it. But that is head hungry not body hungry. But any signs of depression or anger go way when I put on clothes that where in my some day they will fit pile. Or when someone asked have you lost weight.

The biggest advise I can give anyone is make sure you keep your head in the game. As many people say this is a tool. You can choice to make it not work or work. I want it to work. I have bad days and good days with my head but man my body is great.

Bariatric Advantage has a website. They are chewable vitamins I didn't like how many you have to take. You have a 2 multi a day, an iron pill a day, and 6 calcium pills a day. I am not a fan of pills. Right after surgery I was on Flintstones chewables, 2 a day until I ran out then went to the prenatal will iron and that is a one a day( an much more affordable since we are on them for life). Also since I get milk I only have to have one calcium pill a day also.

Please feel free to ask questions. I can only talk to how things went for me but I am happy to share my story.

Thank you!!! I have heard that alot about eating too fast and I eat soooo fast right now...so August...I have heard alot of people say they aren't hungry for a while and then that comes back strong - did you find that? any depression? I am not so nervous about the actual surgery but about complications and depression.. ..obviously everyone is different and they have different experiences. I think too much about that but I want to be prepared. The bariatric advantage - where do you get that? Is that a liquid vitamin? does anyone take those? My dr recommends flintstone chewables - anyone take those? questions questions questions!!!

Hello first off good luck. I had my surgery on Aug 24th. Everything went great. I must have an awesome surgeon because I didn't even have the gas pain I read alot about. Everything has went smooth for me. The only times I get sick is when I eat to fast and I have no one to blame but my self. As for my diet I stay around 600 calories a day and always get the min of 60 grams of protein, that's what my Dr requires. For vitamins I spent a ton of money of bariatric advantage and they are great. However, the Dr recommend prenatal vitamins with iron and I take calcium pills. So far I am down 70 lbs and feel great. Its so fun to put jeans on that are the size I was when I had my daughter 15 years ago.

I hope this helps,

Julie

Hi - my name is Kristin,
I haven't has WLS yet but I am set for Jan 4. I am looking forward to bringing in the New Year as a healthy new me. I would love to hear anything anyone has to say - positive, not so positive. I am not so nervous about the surgery as I am about complications down the road. It seems this procedure has come so far. I have seen alot of expensive products myself so I am curious as to whether or not anyone here has purchased them and are they necessary? I am especially interested in the supplements people are taking after the WLS.

Thank you!
Kristin

Hi everyone. I am in the process of trying to decide if WLS is right for me.. My PCP recommended it and I have my first consultation with my surgeon on Monday. I am surprised that there isn't more activity in this group. How is everyone doing? Where are you at in the process?

I have checked out several other message boards, but I am looking for a variety of opinions. One in particular seems to be very popular and active, but the website also sells ALOT of expensive products, so I want to make sure I get varied opinions about if all those things are necessary or if it is better to learn to eat regular, everyday food.

Thanks for all your input so the newbies don't have to reinvent the wheel!

Rebecca

Dear Kristin,
Congratulations! The absolute best advice I can give is this: Please understand that the surgery is a tool. Alot of people think that they will have this surgery and it will change the way they view or use food. It doesn't. Your brain, your emotional issues, your connections with food for any reasons like celebrating, eating for comfort, eating to relieve boredom, eating to feed an emotion or need, that doesn't go away. There is a HUGE misconception about this. Depending on the type of surgery you are having, there is a window of time that the surgery is most effective, then you are on your own again. You absolutely can eat yourself fat again. Don't forget that. Use your tool wisely, do everything you can from the very beginning to retrain yourself in the way you view and use food, even if you must seek counseling to do it. Ok. Just because that pouch shrinks your physical need for food, it doesnt mean that your emotional need for food gets tiny too..
OK! Good Luck, God Bless. You can do it. I am so very excited for your new life. You will be amazed at what wonderful things will come from this step you are taking.
Stephanie

Oh thank you!!! I am very excited and I am prepared for using it as a tool. I have been going to support groups and counseling as I get ready to under go the surgery. I am a big eating for comfort person so I know that is going to be a challenge. Someone else here said when they get depressed or discouraged they put on some old bigger clothes and see how far they have come and that gives them a renewed sense of success. I am going to do that myself! I am determined to get healthy and stay there! thanks again!
Kristin

I am absolutely on the same page as you about the dumping and then about not wanting to slide back into a "little bit won't hurt" or "I can exercise more tomorrow"! Every way you think needs to change to be in line with this tool. I actually have protein drinks now and I like them alot...but they are soy and I think I will have to switch to Whey? One thing that is a constant that I hear is it is worth it....is there anyone out there that doesn't think it is worth it?
Thanks for all the responses and great tips!

Rebecca

what are some favorite protein drinks? Do you mix with water or skim milk? I have never been huge on working out but I have started walking a bit everyday and that has helped with the anxiety of the whole thing. Funny how you can be so excited and nervous all at the same time.....Jan 4 is right around the corner! I appreciate your response!

Some of my tastes did change after surgery. I like spicier foods now. I know, weird.
I have not had a big issue with vitamins. I make sure I take my B12, my multi (which is a prenatal vitamin as it has all the necessary iron and stuff in it), and my calcium citrate w/vit D chews. At first my vit D was a little low so they put me on an additional pill for two months once a week. But I am off that now. And I did take an extra magnesium for a couple weeks. But I am off that too.
I suck at working out. I really need to get back to it. But overall I feel great and I think having the GBS was the best decision I ever made.
I had some issues with gas. It seemed no matter what I drank, even just water, gas would build up in my system and it hurt. But I think my body has settled enough that it isn't an issue any longer.
My advice on protein shakes is to wait til after surgery then try different ones. Some will taste ok some you will throw away after one sip. :)
My surgery was on 11/18/08. I started at 319. I am 172 today. And I could not be happier. I will never be a size 2 and I am great with that. I am a 12 in jeans and I am feel wonderful and look good. You will find what is best for you. Don't worry.

Julie

I am not so nervous about the surgery as I am about complications down the road. It seems this procedure has come so far. I have seen alot of expensive products myself so I am curious as to whether or not anyone here has purchased them and are they necessary? I am especially interested in the supplements people are taking after the WLS.

Thank you!

I am not a big fan of the powders. I was drinking the High Protein Slim Fast every morning until they recalled the cans. The powder of it is ok. Not my favorite. I've tried the EAS liquids. They are ok. There is one can drink in banana that was good but I forget who makes it.
If you can get yourself to walk do it. It does make it easier after surgery. And I found if I had gas gurgling in my system, walking helped dissapate it.
Good luck! I am sure you will be so happy.

I was opposite on the dumping thing. I tested it so I knew how it felt. You just feel sooooo aweful for about 45 minutes. But now I know the feeling so if I am at a party and am tempted, I know my limitation. I made it a point nit to tell myself that I can 'never' have something. Cause mentally I would obsess about it. So I let myself try something and then I am fine. You have to train yourself though that you cannot eat the portions like you did or snack. Make what you eat worth it. And you may find weird little things. Like I can eat a Hershey kiss but sometimes ketchup upsets my stomach. Weird!!!
Listen to your doctor. They do this for a living. They know. And be honest with them.

Julie

I haven't has WLS yet but I am set for Jan 4. I am looking forward to bringing in the New Year as a healthy new me. I would love to hear anything anyone has to say - positive, not so positive. I am not so nervous about the surgery as I am about complications down the road. It seems this procedure has come so far. I have seen alot of expensive products myself so I am curious as to whether or not anyone here has purchased them and are they necessary? I am especially interested in the supplements people are taking after the WLS.

Thank you!

Thanks for all your input so the newbies don't have to reinvent the wheel!

what are some favorite protein drinks?

I am a 12 in jeans and I am feel wonderful and look good.. You will find what is best for you. Don't worry.
Tiffany

Kristen,
Definately do not stock up on foods or drinks. Your taste does change and you will have wasted a lot of money. The only drink that is consistant is water. My taste has varied in a major way.
I had GBS four months ago and have lost 122 pounds. I have struggled with the vitamin side.. I have just started Bariatric Advantage vitamins. Others were making me throw up.
Beverly

Oh excellent idea about the protein shake - I will definately do that! you know the blended diet doesn't even sound appealing to me.....I might change my mind down the road though....you do sound lucky! I hope I am like that! I like walnut better than pouch.....

Kristen,
Definately do not stock up on foods or drinks.

I am so surprised about the taste change! I never imagined that would be impacted. I am nervous about the vitamins bothering my stomach - I was suprised to read that some people take whole vitamins...I guess at first maybe you can't but as you heal maybe it is possible? I had a horrible time when I was pregnant with the prenatals. Congratulations on your WL!!! that is amazing! Keep us posted on the Bariatric Advantage vitamins - I just found that website a little while ago.
Thanks!
Kristin

Thank you!

Kristen,
Definately do not stock up on foods or drinks.

Oh excellent idea about the protein shake - I will definately do that! you know the blended diet doesn't even sound appealing to me.....I might change my mind down the road though....you do sound lucky! I hope I am like that! I like walnut better than pouch.....
thanks for all your tips!

Some of my taste also change. I use to love mexican food, I can go with out it now. It may have to do with me being able to eat a bigger variety of things as I went from the gastric bypass to gastric sleeve. I eat alot more meat. I take alot a vitamins, chewable Centrum, chewable prenatle vitamins, calcium & biotin, this is for hair loss and great for nails. It works wonderful. I also take a b12 shot monthly. I am not big on the protein drinks and have a hard time getting in the required amount of protein through that source, so I couldnt give much advice there, other than to say that powed Muscle Milk light has some good flavors mixed with unflavored yogurt and frozen fruit is tasty. good luck to all

Oh Biotin! that is an excellent idea. Where do you get all your chewables? Do you have to buy them online? I haven't seen them in the drugstores in my area. I am off to google gastric sleeve!

the chewable centrum i buy at walmart, the chewable prenatle vitamins my gastric dr prescribs along with the b12 shot. the biotin and calcium are pretty big pills but i have found that if i take all of my pills at one time with one drink of water, it is like one bite, if i try one at at time it takes 30 minute or more to get them all down. the gastric sleeve is the best desicion i ever made.
