I apologize for not responding, I've been so busy I haven't checked back since my last posting. I am having the surgery at Newton Wellesly Hospital by Dr. Christopher Davidson. Body contouring after weight loss surgery is his specialty. His web site is: http://www.christopherdavidsonmd.com/
Best of luck!

LOL, this is just the culmination of moderating this group for 11 years. I'm sure that book has already been written.

I'm 11 years post op, and I snack as my eating style. I think it's a great way to go, in spite of the '3 meals a day' advice some surgeons give. I believe it's impossible to maintain your blood sugar if you must wait so long between meals. That said, I recommend eating low carb, complex carb, protein-based snacks, and when it's 'meal time', eat a small meal.

Here's my suggestion for a very livable way of eating:

I eat 6 meals/snacks a day.

My parents have done very well getting to their normal weights with a 90 grams of carbs per day diet, and I have followed their lead.

I believe the easy, general WLS 'wisdom' on protein is 74 grams a day. 'Normal' people need less (like 60 grams). The standard multiplier is .8 grams of protein for every 2.2 pounds of weight.

So divide all that by 6 meal/snacks. You get 15 grams of carbs and 12 grams of protein per meal/snack. Try for complex carbs like fresh fruit, beans, brown rice, quinoa, and whole grain breads. Avoid processed foods made with white flour and any kind of sugar. Don't use those kinds of foods as your carbs if you can help it.

Calories do matter. Cutting back calories is the basic principle of weight loss surgery.

The FDA says fat should be 30-35% of your caloric intake. Do some internet research on how many calories a person should consume in order to lose, then maintain weight. Here's a bit of help: http://www.healthyweightforum.org/eng/calculators/calories-required/

Akins is very high fat. A newer concept is Kimkins, which is a low-fat, low-calorie protein-centered diet. It avoids dairy products in general, cheese is high-fat, milk is high-carb. Alcohol is also avoided. I say 'avoided', meaning it's ok once in a while.

Best of luck,
-Vic

Can you give an example of a typical day? Pointers? I don't do shakes I can tolerate a few but I've been able to reach my protein goal with food. Do u count fat? Hi guys I mostly lurk and have gained great insight. I had surgery August 25 2009 my pre surgery weight was 338 today I weigh in at 226. My weight loss has stalled partly because I have started some bad habits, and I think I'm snacking to much. I am one who has had ZERO issues with food I can eat anything! So I'm considering a low carb lifestyle. Now I'm doing more of a balance between carbs fat and protein I average between 1100 and my all time high of 1600 calories daily. When I look at atkins type programs they seem high in calories between cheese, oil, eggs, and nuts. So my question do you count calories when you go low carb? Do calories matter? Can you give an example of a typical day? Pointers? I don't do shakes I can tolerate a few but I've been able to reach my protein goal with food. Do u count fat? Sorry so many questions just want to get back on track. And most of you guys say low carb is the way to go.

Thanks

Hello all!

A few months back I had posted asking about skin removal surgery and we discussed how difficult it is to get it covered by insurance. Thought I would update you all on the fact that Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mass. approved the surgery without question. The surgeon had warned me that I would need to fight it as I have no medical conditions that make removing the pannus necessary. I got the approval in the mail on my birthday...what a gift! I am having the surgery on May 18. I understand it is extremely painful (I am doing the entire lower body lift along with breast reduction), but I can't wait for the results. I think there is hope that insurance regs are changing in our favor!!

Where in Mass. are you getting your skin removal surgery done at?  I'm getting ready to move to Connecticut in about 4 months and have been trying to get that surgery done in California for the past 2 years.  So, once I move to the east coast, I can try to get the surgery approved out there.

I had my wls 5/2007.  My stats are 324/180/164.
