1. New online support group to check out

Good Morning,
I wanted to let everyone know about a great group I found online that holds live meetings. Bariatric Angels is an online community that has a live online meeting everyday to support those who are struggling with weight loss, or thinking about or have had any form of weight loss surgery, including lap band. Their meetings are posted on the website’s first page at www.bariatricangels.com they also have a store where you can buy their protein supplements. The product is called angelitebites and I have been using it for about 2 months and am seeing excellent progress in my weight loss. I am 6 years out from my surgery and thought that my weight loss days had ended, but I have now lost 25 pounds using the Angelitebites. Check it out; it is an amazing 12 step fellowship.
Blessings, Lauren

I have found some statistics on this and it seems there is alot of people
replacing their food addiction with alcohol. Studies are showing 30% of women
with the surgery falling prey to this. I started a group on facebook to share
stories and web sites and organizations to help those who are interested in
learning or talking about this issue. my fb address is
deannaboisclair@yahoo.com and the group is bariatris surgery and alcoholism.

Having experienced this personally I have to say I have seen this alot.  My
father had his gastric bypass 7 years after I had mine and dropped over 100
pounds in 6 months.  But at that point he started drinking more and more until
eventually he died of liver failure.  I think that there needs to be more
support groups for this sort of thing and I also believe that there needs to be
more education about this prior to the surgery.  Thanks Deanna, I think that
your group is a wonderful idea!

Hi everyone. Nice to meet you all. I asked a question and as I was reading
the responses today I realized I forgot to introduce myself. Thanks for the
responses and sorry for my rudeness. I have fibromyalgia and it can cause me
to be very forgetful at times. My name is Tina. I am 40 married. We have 2
little boys. They are ages 2 and 5. I had a RnY gastric bypass in 1999. I
weighted 300 pounds back then. I am 5' 8". I consider myself to be a partial
success. A work in progress. I thought it would be a good idea to join a
weight loss surgery group for support and also to just share what I am going
through with others. I am sort of isolated due to the fibromyalgia. So
thanks a head of time for listening. I appreciate it.

My opinion on weight loss surgeries over all is good. I do have a problem
with the lack of treating the patient as a whole human being. All this stuff
is just my opinion. Please don't be offended. I am just sharing my
experiences not what I think of anyone else's journey. I was told a lot of
misleading un truthful things pre-op. I don't think the surgeon was lying to
me. I think he was telling me what he knew to be true but he was wrong. Dumb
information like only needing to take a flintstone vitamin once a day after
surgery. Promised the most over weight I would ever be long term after
having surgery was 20 pounds. Just fallow the guide lines we give you and
your weight problems will be gone forever. Ummm I don't think so but wow
wouldn't that have been awesome. I think my long term out come could be so
much more successful. It is sort of sad. My surgery did not hold up long
term. I can eat very large amounts if I chose to or feel the compulsion to.
There is no restriction present. Because I didn't have a DS I absorb quite a
bit. I have never thrown up from over eating like so many others who have
had surgery do. Nope not me. I don't want to throw up but I just noticed
that seems odd. My friend that had the surgery at the same time as me was
barfing all of the time. My surgery was a total success for about 3 years.

People often talk about the surgery being a tool. I think this is true. I
also think that the tool I was given was missing a few parts. Like trying to
use a screw driver with a missing handle. Yes, I can use it but it never
really does the job quite right. I didn't have brain surgery. Whatever hick
up was present in my brain that caused me to over eat to the point of
becoming morbidly obese is still there. Surgery can't fix that. Maybe a
lobotomy (ha,Ha, j/k). The surgery did do it for awhile but when it stopped
working the weight came back on very quickly. For me the excess weight is
like the side effect caused by something else. If I don't cure the something
else some how, I can't heal. I am a compulsive eater. Why else would I be
this over weight. It isn't because I am weak and stupid. It isn't a matter
of lacking will power. It is a sickness/disease. Once my brain says,"I want
a sandwich" no matter what I try or tell myself I will eat that stupid
sandwich. I lose every time. Then I feel guilty and like a big failure and
the cycle continues. I have known this about myself but had no idea how to
fix it. I just recently joined Over Eaters Anonymous.

For the first time in a long time I feel like everything is clicking into
place. My mind is at peace. I feel so much more relaxed. The best part is
how hopeful I feel. I think once the real problem is dealt with I can
finally find success with working on the side effect which is being over
weight. The more of the steps I complete in the program the easier it gets
to stick with my meal plan. I am so happy. If you guys want to hear it I
would love to share this stuff with you all. I wish someone would have
enlightened me. I had no idea about this kind of thing. Maybe it wasn't the
right time, who knows. I am sure ready now.

Hugs,
Tina

Thanks for sharing your story. I, too, am a compulsive overeater.

A wise one on this list once gave us the gift of the following wisdom:

THEY FIX YOUR STOMACH, NOT YOUR HEAD.

I smile every time I remember that.

So the work goes on, one day at a time. One hour at a time, sometimes
one minute at a time.

I wish I would have had the opportunity to have talked with more DS patients
before deciding to have the regular RnY. Long term success rates are much
higher. My surgeon was dead set against DS and didn't do them. Most DSers
seem to have a harder time with not becoming to thin. I am really happy for
you Rhonda. Sounds like you have done very well, congrats.

Hugs,
Tina

Hi, I'm Siri, an almost 55 year old (birthday in a couple of weeks) who had
the DS 01-18-02 -- almost 9 years ago. I had my surgery when I was living
in High Point, NC. I moved back to Cleveland, Ohio about 5 years ago.

If you are curious about whether or not I kept the weight off -- yes, I
did. I weighed 276 pounds and went down to 123 pounds -- from a size 22-24
to a 6 of 8 petite. I stayed at about that weight for 5 years -- then, saw
pics from my daughter's wedding and realized I looked way too thin -- like
my husband and adult kids had been telling me. I put on 20 pounds -- wear a
size 10 now and stil feel great. As with any of our WLS surgeires we made a
life time commitment to ensure we don't gain the weight back or suffer
problems from the side effects it causes.

But, all in all, I am still absolutely thrilled I had it and wouldn't change
a thing.

I had surgery in 2000. I had a segmentation much like banding but not ajustable. Started at 301 lost down to 145. Now my normal weight is around 175 - 185. I feel good most the time at this weight. I am 5' 7.5" and were a 12 in pants. I would love to get back to the 150's but I don't dedicate the time for exercise.

I was 384 went down to 180 then back up to 235.  Just started back doing the
"right things" and am down 8 pounds in less than 10 days.  Its all about what
you do.  When you make the decision to be healthy and eat healthy then it
drops.  Your surgery gave you the tools buts it's up to you to use them
correctly, can't drill a hole with a hacksaw.  I am just as bad as everyone else
and I own that even after the surgery you can't expect to eat a can of pringles
or a chocolate cake and expect to lose.  If I sound preachy to anyone I will
apologize up front just dealing with the same issues myself lately and asking
myself why did I put myself through all of that if I were just going to go back
to the same horrible habits.  I started gaining when I started drinking soda
(diet) again.  Two weeks without now and I have tons more energy.  Good luck to
you, you know how to do this and you have the tools to do it.

I had surgery in 2000. I had a segmentation much like banding but not ajustable.
Started at 301 lost down to 145. Now my normal weight is around 175 - 185. I
feel good most the time at this weight. I am 5' 7.5" and were a 12 in pants. I
would love to get back to the 150's but I don't dedicate the time for exercise.

Rhonda

But, all in all, I am still absolutely thrilled I had it and wouldn't change
a thing.
