I understand about the skin -- everything on me is about six inches lower than it used to be and I have enough skin on my abdomen to make a shelf or certainly an apron. And I don't like it.

I do tend to look at it as a medal of valor -- I did something proactively to work on my weight problem and there are very few things I can look back and say "this was my choice and I made it" but you're right -- when I look at myself objectively, "a melted candle" is a good simile.

My understanding about insurance-covered plastic surgery is that if you develop constant fungal infections in any of the folds, or ulcerations or any problems with the integrity of the skin, insurance WILL cover the removal of the excess skin. The friend who encouraged me to have my surgery had had hers -- and had enough fungal infections underneath her folds of skin on her abdomen that she was able to undergo an insurance paid reduction surgery.

I also believe that if your hospital is connected to a burn center, frequently they will take donations of the excess skin removed, particularly as skin on the abdomen is usually in better shape than anywhere else (for lack of sun exposure). You'd have to check with your hospital for that.

Of course, all this happened five years ago in Massachusetts when a) insurance companies were more flexible and b) Massachusetts insurance companies are mandated by law to offer certain types of treatment, which is not the case is other states (for example, Florida, where I live now).

Hope this helps.
