Stu, what is keeping you from doing the surgery?  Please consider that your self-esteem is only affected by your weight if you let it.  And believe me, I know the panic you feel at gaining weight that you worked so hard to lose.  Please keep your chin up and find a d@mn good doctor.  You are worth the work to feel better and get off the pain killers.  Also, they have come a long way with fusion surgery.  Recovery is quick and not as scary as you might imagine.  You deserve a full life!
I will say a prayer for you.

Tina

Have you told this to your dr?  You need to make sure they understand what you are going through, and if they don't...find one that will!  It's hard not to gain weight when you can't do anything.  Your usual diet isn't going to work without the exercise.  You have to be able to find some relief...talk to your doctor is the best start.

Stu,
Don't give up  you have done so well.  you need to get back to you excerciseing. Walk  aroun the neighborhood  or at the mall inside.
Check and see if you can find a homeapathic doctor to give you some ideas of things to take.  Also Try reading some books on Reiki it will help you get your mind  more centered.
Hope this helps.

My name is Stu. I am from Indiana. I had a RNY 3 years ago. I have lost over 250 lbs.
I am very strict with my diet and exercise plan.
I was at my goal weight until Feb 2012 when I started having back EXTREME back pain.
I went to a spine surgeon and he said I need a spine fusion
I have tried to manage my pain with Percocet and spinal injections.
Here is where I need help.
Since Feb I have went from a size 34 pant to a size 42.
I have gained almost 50 lbs.
I have not changed my diet at all.
I really need help. I am depressed. I am 37 yrs old and I am scared I am on the road to being 500 lbs again. I look in the mirror and see a big fat guy again.
Does anyone know what I can do or if Percocet or the spinal blocks are causing me to have a massive weight gain.
My self esteem is gone.
Please help.
Stu

Hi Gypzymoon
You have basically took the words right out of mouth literally. I had RNY Surgery in 05 and weighted 324lbs at the time. The lowest I've gotten down to was 170 and now have climbed back up to 200lbs. My size 14 clothes re starting not to fit now and I'm out of breathe when I run now. Ugh!
I keep talking about going bak to my protein shakes, but keep putting it off cause something else sounds more appetizing.

So, I'm all ears too.

Hello Deb! Welcome back! I don't check here as often as I should, my apologies for the slow response, just read your note this morning.

Sorry to hear you gained back weight, but I hear ya. I go up and down with the same 20 lbs, it can be a struggle. I know what it is for me so I've cut out alcohol and 'white food' (sugar, bread, potatoes, rice, pasta). Also, I'm addicted to Mentos gum, which is ultra-sweet to handle my sweets cravings. I wish you strength and luck in 'the good fight'. Have you considered checking in with the surgeon about your weight gain? Has it been 11 years? Time really flies.

I moved to Florida in 2009, when I divorced Kev. I remarried in 2010 (Rod), and we're doing well, both working. One of my twins is living with us since Sept. 2011, he graduated college and is working here, but not at a career job. Please drop me a line at afterwls@aol.com.

Best,
Vic

Hi Gypzymoon
You have basically took the words right out of mouth literally. I had RNY Surgery in 05 and weighted 324lbs at the time. The lowest I've gotten down to was 170 and now have climbed back up to 200lbs. My size 14 clothes re starting not to fit now and I'm out of breathe when I run now. Ugh!
I keep talking about going bak to my protein shakes, but keep putting it off cause something else sounds more appetizing.

So, I'm all ears too.

Hello everyone.... Hi Vic....
I had RNY Dec, 2001. 11 years ago. That is a long time. I am 5'7" and was 350lbs on the day of surgery. I went down to 205-ish (didn't get under 200) Then a plateau. then up and down within 50lbs (so 200 - 250) over the years. I'm at 230 now. Still considered morbidly obese, which I HATE that term anyway. I think I want to get to 180 and that will be my healthy weight.
I took a bad health break for about 4 years, and now I am better and I feel younger even, and determined to at least get under 200.
I graze.... I catch myself and stop, but it's unconscious... that means I have to THINK more... yuck... who wants to do that much thinking anyway.
sometimes when there is no good food in the house I actually catch myself looking everywhere and thinking of what I can put together to satisfy the sweet tooth. I use to dump after so many pieces of sweets but the "many" pieces count has increased over the years (sigh.)
I still dump severely if I have two glasses of wine and then a desert. So definitely wine and sweets don't mix. I cannot mix the two... ever. Last time I dumped was 4 months ago.

We can talk about dumping (it SUCKS for me)... (it is different for everyone).... the low sugar thing is also common but very personal. I usually get a little dizzy, and then I know I need to have a bite of something. But that's it.
enough talk now.
my best to everyone.

Your surgeon can request an upper GI test that is an x-ray of you as you swallow a liquid the scanner can see. It shows to some extent the size of your stomach but isn't all that reliable.

We have a document in our file section called "Pouch Rules for Dummies", which describes a test done with measured cottage cheese, and gives an idea of how much cottage cheese one's stomach pouch might hold after certain time periods.

I long-ago set it up so this document gets emailed to every new member of this group, not sure if that is still working.

Does anyone know if there is a way to tell if your stomach has stretched?

Thank you for sharing your insights with us. I've found that beer puts weight on me like crazy. I used to do 'Dr. Atkins' with a distilled liquor drink or 2, and still lose weight. But beer, as much as I love it, is a major weight adder for me. My husband finds that true, too. He's never had a weight problem until he retired and started having 1 or 2 beers daily. His sedentary lifestyle and some brewskis have helped him gain 30 pounds in the last 3 years.

Sorry about the recent spam. Sometimes email accounts get hacked (mine was) because one of those 2 members posting spam have belonged here since 2009 without spam. I do check, and will remove the offender and spam post. Thanks for your indulgence on this.

Anyone taking Magnesium citrate? All I can find is Magnesium oxide, but am reading that the citrate form is very much better absorbed.

Thanks!

Interesting. I find the opposite. If I drink much at all I get the dumping.
I can drink but slowly and usually with food. And I'm 10 years out so not
expecting any more changes!

In reading this article, I feel Mr. Kahn was simply unable to take
responsibility for his own decisions.

I am a 34 year old woman - having had RNY in November 2007 - weight, 391.
Prior to surgery, I had cut out my alcohol use as I knew it would not be
"advised" after surgery.
Prior to surgery, I worked in a car dealership, and getting ahead (as a
woman) meant hanging out at the local bar on Friday nights with the guys. My
tolerance had always been limited to 2-3 Coronas, which today I understand
to have an alcohol content of approximately 4%.

A little over a year after my surgery, I met a man, who turned out to be an
alcoholic, and we began a relationship of sorts - no further details
necessary, other than to say I found myself trying to "fit in" to his life by
making the conscious decision to drink with him. Woodbridge Chardonnay and
Riunite Lambrusco were my beverages of choice. I had had Lambrusco prior to
my surgery, as well, but never "noticed" any buzz I may have had. If
anything, I think drinking post surgery has been a lesson because I have learned
what a buzz feels like. Though, when that relationship ended, so did my
relationship with wine. Does drinking more frequently - though, this was
neither daily nor weekly, just simply "more frequently", make me an alcoholic?
Ironically, because of my relationship with the man (and of course, the more
complicated details), I found myself becoming very critical of my alcohol
use - but never to blame it as an after affect of my surgery!

In December 2010, 3 years post surgery, I was introduced to a local social
group of Beer Homebrewers. I spend time at their events, and even try the
homemade beverages. I have used the opportunity to learn about how beer is
made, what the difference in styles is, what the average alcohol content for
a style is, and even have a pint from time to time. I've learned that
having a beer once in a while is safer for me than a glass of wine - the
alcohol content is FAR less, and even a Porter style beer (10-13%) is at least 5%
less alcohol content than a cheap glass of wine (15-18%)!

In learning what I have learned, I KNOW how much I can safely drink and how
long the intoxication will impact my abilities. I am beyond careful to
make sure that I drink only when it is safe - in places where I can stay the
night, or with people I trust who know my situation. When I attend club
events, I do so with fun shot glasses from the party store - 1.5 oz is all they
hold, so I can try several different beers without getting buzzed.

Does any of this make me an alcoholic? I don't believe so. But I also take
responsibility for my drinking. I was not introduced to wine or beer
because I had had surgery. I didn't start drinking AFTER I had surgery.

In the article, Mr. Kahn states that he had been able to drink before his
surgery, but he seems to blame the surgery for his ability to drink
afterwards. How about taking responsibility for making the choices to see how far
the limits could be pushed?

One final note which seems important to add: In July 2010, I weighed 240.
At current, I am back up to 280. I have gained weight. Though, I do
acknowledge that the calories from the beer are most likely a part of the weight
gain, I also acknowledge that in 2 years of unemployment, primarily spent at
home GRAZING, many of my food choices have not been as healthy as they
should have been. However, to blame the full weight gain on the alcohol would
be as irresponsible as Mr. Kahn's claim of gaining weight solely due to
drinking alcohol. I know for a fact that had I been faced with 2 years
unemployment sitting on the couch PRIOR to my surgery, I would have gained FAR more
than 40 pounds!

I hope I have not offended anyone. We all have our story, I just get so
frustrated when people blame addiction problems post-RNY on the surgery itself
instead of taking responsibility for their own choices.

Don't know about you (I had RNY), but I've experienced this...I can drink more wine than I used to because it wears off sooner. I limit my intake, tho.

Hello All!
I had an RNY exactly 3 years ago. It was very successful. I have lost about 260 lbs and staying steady.
Back in March I started having terrible back pain. I have had MRIs and every test you can think of.
They just started doing injections in my back about 2 months ago.
They help for a short time then I can't hardly move or walk.
The specialist I saw this last week thinks it could be from my hips being out of align from my weight loss. Seveal other Doctors have said it also is from my weight loss????
Anyone had any issues like this??
Please help

We have a friend that is a chiropractor and homeopathic doctor. She is
amazing at getting the body all aligned. Maybe you could find someone like
that to help you.

Right now I'm dodging a bullet..My surgery was Dec 2010. I made it to 154 from 208. A few pounds found there way back, I am 157.5 right now. I know its emotional eating for me. ex. I enjoy the time at night when everyone goes to bed and I'm not in demand. Around 10PM I settle in the lounger and read my kindle. I started brewing a cup of coffee in my Keurig, adding my favorite creamer...every night. as a treat/ I gave up soda for flavored vita-water.
I am a carbo snacker....crackers or pretzils
I really need to focus and not blindly grazing.. HUGS to all of you

Hello all I'm so glad were back up and running. I gave up soda before my surgery and never get the taste for it. The one thing I remember is them explaining to me what soda does to a normal stomach and it makes me remember that it will really mess up my pouch. I have lately faced a big challenge it started 2 yrs ago my sugar drops every blue moon and out of no where the first time it happened I didn't know what was going on and I'm a nurse(lol) I was talking and my words started slurring and I was shaking and sweating so bad my hair was dripping all this in less than five minutes. Another nurse gave me orange juice but because I can no longer gulp it didn't help. She ended up feeding me 2 cookies that worked rite away. Because it has happened at odd times and hour I have started snacking on cookies or candy and now I've gained some weight back. Which is very upsetting. All my labs have been done and nothing was found I take my blood sugar when I can catch it before the shakes start to see how low it is and it only like 75/80 which according to the ADA isn't low but for me it is. If anyone out there in our group who has faced this and found a solution please help me my doctor can't and no I was never a diabetic before my weight lose. I'm 7 yrs post RNGY

I'm not sure if I can help or not. I'm 3 yrs RNY. My husband is a type 2 diabetic. For him he always makes sure to have protein with his carb and takes whey protein shakes like I do. Apples also help him to stay balanced.

Please do not feel as if you are alone.  I am just a year out from RNY and noticed the same thing happening to me which started about 3 months post op.  I too have not found the "solution" as to why this is happening and I also was not diabetic prior to surgery.  I have been to my family MD about it, labs were done and A1-C and blood sugars are still normal.  His solution was to "eat more frequently".  HA!  Well, in doing so, I have already begun to gain weight back and I'm extremely bummed about it.  I will say that my lows happen mainly in relation to my menstrual cycle. I started tracking and notice especially the couple days prior to until near the end of my cycle, I will get lows.  My "lows" also are not very low, mainly ranging in the 70's-80's although I have had some 60's and once had a 39 but for the most part they are "normal" in accordance with ADA guidelines.  I too feel mine and sometimes can even feel the lows once my blood sugar
starts dropping below 100.
Sorry, I can't be of help really but wanted to let you know you are not alone!

Verna
