Hi Stu - I'm female, and it took 2 tummy tucks to get my abdomen skin tightened. I was off work 5 days plus 2 weekends. there is some pain associated with healing but the incision is in the skin, not the muscles, so it is not that painful. However, you would be amazed at how much you use your abdominal muscles to drive, and that takes about a month to heal and you must be careful moving the steering wheel. Try to get someone to drive for you/car pool if you can.

Has anyone tried these, and what did you think of them? I don't trust the so-called 'review' sites. Thanks!

Hey Stu,
I had abdominoplasty back in 2006. I was out of work for 2 weeks. I worked in an office so I didn't have any physical duties to deal with.
I was in a bit of pain, but it was managed with drugs. During the first week, I had an automatic pump that would inject medication directly into the surgical area. During week 2, I tapered off of the meds.
All the best,
George Dailey

I'm going to start using this one when it comes out next month. http://www.boresharesearch.com/sweetberry.htm
It's 10 grams of protein but it's good. I got to sample it and it tastes way better than anything I have found on the market. I can't handle the Bariatric Advantage products( I actually met with the owner when the products first came out about helping market them but I couldn't handle the taste!) and I'm driving distance from them and have been in to sample all their products and can't handle the artificial sweeteners. This company has a natural sweetener that tastes better than sugar and is low glycemic. Both my dietitian and Bariatric Surgeon have approved it and they have asked me when I get my hands on some of the protein to bring it to the support group for sampling. I was able to preorder a few cans. I don't think they are taking orders at the moment but the projected date is first week of Feb. For my calcium, vitamin D and Magnesium supplements I use their bone matrix and my labs have greatly improved to mid normal range and as a bonus my arthritis has stopped bothering me. You may want to read up on the products and see what you think. You can always email me if you want any more info.

2a. Iron deficiency
Posted by: "MotherOf3" afterwls@aol.com vicstevens
Date: Sun Jan 15, 2012 6:33 am ((PST))
Iron deficiency that can lead to anemia is a known side-effect of gastric bypass surgery. Correction of this condition is a 'gray area', there is no same answer for everyone in that group. The problem is absorption of iron at individual levels. If it is a problem for you, you must find a knowledgable doctor, have your blood tested at least twice a year, eat food that impacts this condition, and either take supplements or get vitamin shots to ensure you don't become anemic.
Please stay in touch with a doctor on this issue. We are not medical professionals here, nothing said here should ever be construed as medical advice. Our input is strictly anecdotal from our personal experience.
I've had a slight iron deficiency since my RNY in January 1999 (13 years!), and my doctor(s) tried over-the-counter and prescription supplements for me, but those didn't have much impact. I have my blood tested twice a year for Vitamin D and blood cell count, and am lucky in that I'm holding at a lower level of iron without visible effects of anemia.
Vitamins 'work together' with each other and simply taking an iron and Vitamin D supplement may not do the trick. Some studies show increased Vitamin C intake can aid in the absorption of iron. Here is info one such study:

I'm just a little over a year from my surgery (RNY). I was given a supplement plan, and I was told I would need to take the supplements for the rest of my life. Right now, I'm ordering my protein powders, multi-vitamins, B12, Iron and Calcium Citrate from a company that supplied the hospital pharmacy.
Have any of you found the protein powder over the counter that I may sustitute the Bariatric Advantage Powder, which provides 27 grams of Protein.
Thank you

Just about any protein powder you buy will provide what you need as long it
is Whey. Found Soy protein doesn't provide the vitamins and minerals or
amount of protein I need. I am 10 years out and buy mine from GNC, Vitamin
World, and even Walmart. Once I check for the vitamins and minerals and
protein -- I shoot for 25 grams or higher -- I just buy it. You will save a
great deal of money by checking out other vitamin stores/outlets/walmart,
ect. If you don't have a comfort level changing -- take the label from your
protein powder canister and go the store(s) and compare the ingredients and
minera/vitamin/protein content and amounts. That should set our mind at
ease.

Thank you all SOOOO Much!!!
I have cancer and total pain and tingling in my feet, legs and hands. We have been trying to switch out my meds to see what might be causing it to no avail. However, I do know that I have Vitamin D deficiency, so I have contacted my insurance to get authorization to see a nutritionist. I believe that I need to balance the cancer treatments with a nutritionist and you have let the fuze to get me moving.
Thanks, Kat

I had the DS almost 11 years ago and I suffered from severe Vitamin D deficiency. It began with sore legs and ankles, then my feet. It hurt so bad to walk I thought I had rheumatoid arthritis – felt like my ankles were going to crack with each step. Thankfully, my PPO did a blood test and found it was vitamin D. I'm taking 3000 IUs daily and the pain is gone. I also have a problem absorbing Potassium – I take about 6-8 vitamin pills daily 595mcg and drink about 8 oz of diet tonic water daily or I have severe, debilitating cramps in my legs, ankles, and feet – extremely painful. This seems to be the only thing that works for me.
Do any of you find that if you don't eat enough protein, you get extreme stomache pain? It happens when I get on a veggie or salad kick and eat less meat. The only thing that stops the pain is if I down a protein drink, and it subsides. I'm wondering if this is something that folks with DS get or if RNY folks get it, too.
Despite all the side effects, I am so grateful that I had the surgery. It did save my life. Before the surgery I'd had 2 heart attacks – one at 43 and another at 45 when my coronary stent failed, had a fatty liver the Dr. feared would go into failure, Type II Diabetes, and had severe water on both knees I had to have removed about every 6 weeks. I started at 276 pounds and stayed at about 123 – 126 pounds for about 5 years. Then, I saw pics of me at my daughter's wedding and being 50 at the time, looked way to thin. I gained 20 pounds and went from size 8 petite or 6 to a 10 and sometimes 12. So now, at 56 yrs of age I maintain about 140 to 143 pounds. My heart has held steady all these years, no more fatty liver, no diabetes, but the bad knees – well, just a price of carrying all that weight for so long. I'm postponing knee replacement surgery my ortho dr says I need for my right knee as long as possible.
My husband loved me heavy and loves me now, and I've been able to enjoy all 5 of my grandchildren. Something I never thought would happen before the surgery. So, it is definitely worth any of the side effects of the surgery – I only wish I had done it earlier. I might have been able to avoid 2 heart attacks
I had my surgery in Winston-Salem, NC, but moved back home to Cleveland, Ohio about 6 years ago – I miss the monthly meetings, then little picnics or get togethers with my fellow WLS buddies. It is nice to have this on-line group to discuss problems or issues since I don't know anyone here who has been through this surgery.

I had my surgery about 10 years ago. I also struggle with iron deficiency. When the doctors originally diagnosed it I was severely anemic. They recommended that I see a hematologist who ended up administering iron into my blood intravenously. It took about three sessions of this and a shot to stimulate my bone marrow. This was the original treatment. I am glad to say that I only have to have iron intravenously once a year now. All that said, I would suggest that you ask your doctor to refer you to a hematologist depending on how low your iron registers. Good luck.

I was told I have to have vitamin b12 injections every three months for the rest of my life because the body is not able to absorb this any longer. I know when I am due because I get EXTREMELY fatigued!

My wife has to take iron infusions. The dr's say since the surgery she can't absorb the iron if she takes it.
