I had the DS almost 11 years ago and I suffered from severe Vitamin D deficiency. It began with sore legs and ankles, then my feet. It hurt so bad to walk I thought I had rheumatoid arthritis – felt like my ankles were going to crack with each step. Thankfully, my PPO did a blood test and found it was vitamin D. I'm taking 3000 IUs daily and the pain is gone. I also have a problem absorbing Potassium – I take about 6-8 vitamin pills daily 595mcg and drink about 8 oz of diet tonic water daily or I have severe, debilitating cramps in my legs, ankles, and feet – extremely painful. This seems to be the only thing that works for me.

Do any of you find that if you don't eat enough protein, you get extreme stomache pain? It happens when I get on a veggie or salad kick and eat less meat. The only thing that stops the pain is if I down a protein drink, and it subsides. I'm wondering if this is something that folks with DS get or if RNY folks get it, too.

Despite all the side effects, I am so grateful that I had the surgery. It did save my life. Before the surgery I'd had 2 heart attacks – one at 43 and another at 45 when my coronary stent failed, had a fatty liver the Dr. feared would go into failure, Type II Diabetes, and had severe water on both knees I had to have removed about every 6 weeks. I started at 276 pounds and stayed at about 123 – 126 pounds for about 5 years. Then, I saw pics of me at my daughter's wedding and being 50 at the time, looked way to thin. I gained 20 pounds and went from size 8 petite or 6 to a 10 and sometimes 12. So now, at 56 yrs of age I maintain about 140 to 143 pounds. My heart has held steady all these years, no more fatty liver, no diabetes, but the bad knees – well, just a price of carrying all that weight for so long. I'm postponing knee replacement surgery my ortho dr says I need for my right knee as long as possible.

My husband loved me heavy and loves me now, and I've been able to enjoy all 5 of my grandchildren. Something I never thought would happen before the surgery. So, it is definitely worth any of the side effects of the surgery – I only wish I had done it earlier. I might have been able to avoid 2 heart attacks

I had my surgery in Winston-Salem, NC, but moved back home to Cleveland, Ohio about 6 years ago – I miss the monthly meetings, then little picnics or get togethers with my fellow WLS buddies. It is nice to have this on-line group to discuss problems or issues since I don't know anyone here who has been through this surgery.

I had my surgery about 10 years ago. I also struggle with iron deficiency. When the doctors originally diagnosed it I was severely anemic. They recommended that I see a hematologist who ended up administering iron into my blood intravenously. It took about three sessions of this and a shot to stimulate my bone marrow. This was the original treatment. I am glad to say that I only have to have iron intravenously once a year now. All that said, I would suggest that you ask your doctor to refer you to a hematologist depending on how low your iron registers. Good luck.
