Your incision cuts across many nerve endings. I recall having a similar situation that improved and went away over time.

Your body could eventually feel more normal, but your best bet is asking your surgeon about this. If he does not give you an answer that you find satisfactory, and if in 6 months time you still have the problem, you may want to seek a medical settlement attorney.

I think 60lbs in 4 months is pretty normal. I had similar stats. Also, please don't compare yourself to others who may have more weight to lose than you, or who may have had more drastic procedures than you had. I think you're doing just fine at the rate you have stated.

Hi,
As I mentioned in my earlier posts I was on 11 rx drugs befor surgery, 7 of which the side effect was weight gain. I think some of my rapid weight loss is due to the fact that these meds are no longer part of my life. I started out at over 400 pounds. I am now getting down to the real me. I expect my weight loss to slow way down real soon. Any weight loss is good. Stick with it!

Sixty punds in 4 months is great. Don't get discouraged. You have done something positive to change the rest of your life. You are heathier and you will get stronger too.
Remember, I am sure there was a time when you weren't taking care of yourself. Now you are and don't compare yourself to someone else. As long as you know that you are doing what you need to do.... continue to be positive and lose that weight.
Good Luck and feel better!!!!

Hi Everyone,

At this point, my insurance company is decideing if they will pay for a roux-n-y for me. I have been dieting for six months. I lost 10 pounds. I have lost 120 pounds in the past and gained it back. As with most of you, I have lost and gained several people worth of weight. My BMI is 42. I am 58.

I so much want my health back. I take 8 presciptions.I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, depression, diabetes, arthritis, fibromyalgia, and sleep apnea.

Also, I know that people treat fat people differently than thin people.
I understand that many people become angry once they lose weight and fully realize that while they were fat, people had been judging them in ways that were not obvious to them. There are obvious ways, like staring laughing and not being taken seriously. I wondered what people here have experienced.

I would appreciate any advice that people who have had the surgery can give to me.

Margaret

I met with a plastic surgeon yesterday to begin formulating a plan to remove the excess skin, as there is a lot. I wanted to give myself plenty of time to save up for what I knew would be an expensive surgery(s). Much to my surprise the surgeon said that it is extremely rare for insurance to cover any part of the surgery aside from breast reduction, if I can qualify for it. So, I am wondering if any of you have had the surgery and, if so, were you able to get it covered by insurance.

George,
Thank you for this site, Im going to start tomorrow. I will try anything to not have to redo the surgery. Im assuming that if after the 5 days I am unable to eat as much and losing weight then my pouch is still able to work as it should? Just wanted to make sure and will post results when Im done! Let me know if it worked for you too..
Steph

I went to my doctor and he put me in the hospital for 4 days of tests. Found out that my thyroid is not working properly and I have a buldging disk in my neck. Neither of which are cause for the numbness.
I will keep you all posted on my progress.

Hello,
My name is Stephanie. I had Open RNY Gastric Bypass 6 years ago.
There were many complications, too much to tell at this point, but wanted to ask a basic question. I lost 150lbs with my surgery. I have regained 75 of these pounds. It is heartbreaking and terrifying and I need to ask if it is possible after 6 years to get my pouch to work again? Or do I need to seek help for a revision. The thought of possibly going thru what I did before scares me to death. But, I have 2 small children and I need to get this weight off of me. What do you think? Any information would be so greatly appreciated.

Hello Stephanie,

I'm just about 6 years out and have had success with the pouch test diet: http://5daypouchtest.com/

It let me know that my pouch was still working and helped jumpstart some much needed weightloss.

Good luck,

George

So sorry for what you are going through. I do know how you feel though. I had my surgery not even 2 yrs ago (april). Lost 107lbs and have gained back at least 35lbs of it. I do believe its because I quit smoking 7 months ago. I need to get back on track again also. I hope that you can find your way back. If you are like me; its hard to get back mentally also!

I think you should contact your doctor . That would not be normal . most
times numbness after surgery would be some kind of nerve damage. there is a
normal amount you could have near an incision line but not from your entire
trunk.

is an ultra sound of the legs the best test for DVT??? DVT really scares me and i think they are going to do an ultra sound before surgery to check me out... i do have leg swelling but it comes and goes so i think i am ok....

Since the radio-tracer that was needed for a nuclear med test for DVT is not longer available, ultrasound is the test used most often. My husband said just because someone is heavy, it doesn't mean someone would get DVT but inactivity is more likely to be the cause. Many things cause leg swelling. If your doc is concerned about DVT, he should do the test. Always go along with their recommendations or at least get a second opinion,  but it's good to question things if you think something isn't being done.
Good luck and feel well! Sheila

I had WLS 3 months ago and have lost 90 pounds so far. I am numb from the breast to the knees. Can anyone give me a hint as to what is wrong? Do I need to go back to the surgeon?

I had WLS 3 months ago and have lost 90 pounds so far. I am numb from the breast to the knees. Can anyone give me a hint as to what is wrong? Do I need to go back to the surgeon?

Josie - could you go for a gastic? Could your surgeon just remove your band?

So sorry to hear of your discomfort. I hope things resolve for you soon.

Ive been starting to drop the weigh slowly but this is painful... Well not me personally but I know that they usually cover the stomach only because the skin underneath has a tendency to get kinda stinky and sores will develop if not keep clean at all times.. of course the Doc has to send the pics in to the insurance company but that is what I've heard you may want to call your insurance company and find out everything.......

Subject: [After Weight Loss Surgery] Removing Excess Skin

Hi,

I had gastric bypass surgery almost eight months ago and am doing great. I have lost 110 pounds and am feeling better than I have ever felt before.

Thank you!

Aime

You'll have to let us know if you get approved. The surgeon I saw yesterday said it's very difficult to get it covered. I have BCBS also, and they were very lenient with the bypass surgery. I met the criteria, so didn't have a weight loss requirement or waiting period at all. So it will be interesting to see. The surgeon said that the insurance company will want proof that there is a skin condition or that the excess skin makes it difficult to walk or exercise. He said they would want copies of bills and documentation from a dermatologist or physical therapist. Then they will look at the cost of the surgery versus the cost of treating the condition going forward. If the cost of the surgery is greater than the other costs it will be declined. It's all very interesting!

Thanks and best of luck,

Aime

I had Abdominoplasty...for my insurance to cover it they had to remove my belly button. It's no big deal, because I no one ever sees it. I would get awful infections under my flap. I don't know if the doctor goofed, or what...but I have what I refer to as a man package. My pubic area is very large, and I wear long shirts and keep it under cover. I have thought about seeing another doctor, but the thought of another surgery I don't know if it's worth it. The surgery was a quick recovery, because they didn't cut muscle. Good Luck!

My husband, who is a radiologist disagrees. DVT patients are ultrasounded usually. They do not use MRI or CT for DVT since the radio tracer for DVT has not been available for some time. Even 450 lb men can have ultrasound he said, although it may be limited, they would likely try.

Subject: [After Weight Loss Surgery] Two Good Reasons To Have WLS

If you're undecided about whether to go ahead with weight-loss surgery, please consider this:

I'm sitting here in the hospital, reflecting on my husband's brush with death, after sustaining one or more blood clots during a
10-hour flight back from Europe two weeks ago.

Early on, shortly after admission, two important MRI and CT tests - routinely administered to DVT patients of normal weight -
would have provided the physicians with important information about his health. But at 100 pounds over the maximum patient
weight for the machines, he was ineligible for those tests.

He's much improved, out of ICU and in what they call "intermediate care"; the docs say he's made "an amazing recovery" (implied:
"for a 450-pound man"). Soon we'll be looking at some time in Rehab, but not all local facilities provide bariatric care. He's been
accepted at the only one that does; had they not accepted him, he would have had to go to a facility located 90 miles from
home.

So in making your list of pros and cons of having WLS, please add the very real possibility of having to accept the possibility of
less-than-optimal care - or traveling great distances to get that care - to the "pro" side of your list.

Wow! This is interesting. My HB did have ultrasonic imaging of his
legs, using a portable unit at his bedside. I'll have to ask about
this. Thanks to you and your HB for the idea - I'll definitely look
into it.

Thank you for asking these questions.
I had WLS on 3/25/2009. As of today, I lost 87 lbs. My goal is 35-40 lbs away. I have plenty of excess skin in & around my breasts and I noticed some between my upper thigh and my backside. I know there will be plenty when I finish losing as My stomach and abdomen are slowly going down.
I'm currently unemployed and doing some consulting work when I can get it however I am a promising job interview tomorrow. I don't have health insurance and I will get it once I get a job. I'm sure I can get a breast reduction covered as I have 3 herniated discs in my neck but not sure about the rest. The info provided in response to your questions is VERY helpful.
