Hi, you are not alone! Don't feel bad about it, let's change it. I am about 19 months post op and was doing the same thing, as of yesterday...lol. I decided last week that today, Monday I would start the 5 day pouch test. There is another member, Julie who is starting today with me also. Do you want to join us? We could all use the support from each other. I probably gained about 10 pounds since April. I stopped losing weight probably in February or March and was just coasting along, but I realize that I'm starting bad habits again and I don't want to slide backwards!! This is an awesome group, I just joined last week and it's been really motivating. I also like meeting people who are going thru or have gone thru the same things. It's hard to explain how you're feeling to people who can't understand. So, you are NOT alone.

Stacy

I am 26 months out from surgery and was wondering if anyone else went through eating everything and anything, even if you were;nt hungry or you knew you would'nt feel well afterwards. Any suggestions, I worried.

Hi There:

I didn't have the RNY surgery, I had the BPD/DS surgery about 7 ½ years ago.
I don't have dumping syndrome, but if I eat too much of a good thing –
cookies, cake, spicy food, ect. – I have symptons as if I was on Alli –
severe diarrhea to the point of liquid oil. So, I have to be careful.

The folks I have know that have gained weight seemed to have another thing
in common – they all had proximal cuts as opposed to a distal cut which is
what I had. The distal cut makes the common channel between the large and
small intestine much smaller than the proximal cut. When I lived in High
Point, NC, my surgeon – Dr. Gonzales had monthly support group meetings I
used to attend. There were many folks there that had or were in the process
of having revisional surgery to distal cuts.

I'm 53 years old and I purposely put on 20 pounds after I saw the pics from
my oldest daughter's wedding – I weighed about 123 then – and looked very
gaunt and just plain skinny. I was wearing an 8 petite or size 6 – now I
wear regular size 8s or 10s and feel great. I have to eat a lot to keep my
weight up. When I get sick, it immediately drops a few pounds. But, I
haven't really had an issue with gaining weight.

I'm not sure if this will be helpful or not, but it is another aspect to
look into if you've had a problem gaining weight after the surgery. I did
follow the directions for nutrition and diet after surgery so I agree that
does make a difference.

Good Luck Newbies. Just remember that surgery is a not a miracle cure.
On-going maintenance of your weight loss and good health is a life time
commitment. In my case, I have to eat enough protein to keep my weight up,
and take vitamin supplements daily. Why, because the DS and distal cut stop
my body from absorbing vitamins and minerals properly. I also have to take
potassium supplements because that is a real issue for me. If I don't take
the vitamins and potassium, I start to feel sluggish, sick to my stomach and
get really bad leg cramps. I've been doing this since Jan, 2002, and will
have to continue it the rest of my life.

Would I do it again? You betcha. It saved my life – after 2 heart attacks
by the age of 45 years, a fatty liver, and diabetes – I was going to die
very young without seeing my granddaughter grow up. She is now 8 years old
and I have 3 more grandchildren I thank God for everyday. I can run, jump,
roll on the floor with my babies, and have great sex with my husband. So,
no – I don't regret a thing. I just do what I have to do to stay healthy
and happy.

God Bless and again, Good Luck.

Siri

Ray: As someone who has "failed" surgery - I've regained 90-100 lbs of the
150 I lost I would like to say this for you to consider.

I believe my biggest downfall was straying from what I was told to do in
regards to eating, drinking, and acceptable foods. I was continually pushing
the envelope. At first it was just a bite here and there of: a meatball sub,
birthday cake, fried chicken, milkshakes, pop, etc.... How did this
snowball? Now I can 2-3 dozen cookies without dumping, a whole pizza, all
the fried and fatty foods I want, and I wash it all down with a Diet Pepsi.
This is obviously not a good thing.

My biggest struggle right now is getting back on track and back to basics.
My mindset of seeing what I could get away with has brought me nothing but
grief. I know there are a lot of other contributing factors. I also know
that pre-surgery I didn't want to hear anything "negative" that people had
to say about it. I wanted it, and that was all there was to it.

I am 8-1/2 years post op, and I'm not trying to discourage you AT ALL! I
believe the surgery is a good thing. I am just hoping to help you avoid a
potential pitfall that has really done me in.

I certainly wish you the best. Keep asking your questions. It's really great
that you are being so open minded and thoughtful about your future.

Julie

I am 8-1/2 years post-op. I have been receiving IV iron infusions for years. It was so bad I even had a hysterectomy (at 38) hoping to make things better. I also still inject myself with B-12 once a week - down from once a day.

If you find something, I'd sure love to hear about it.

Julie

Hi,

I am in the process of requesting approval for the RNY. I have been lurking on this site for a while and in general it seems most are happy with their new body. I am a bit of an emotional eater and realize this is a tool and that although it fixes your body, it doesn't fix your head. I am concerned about that aspect and also the dumping syndrome. I have been making great strides in not over eating although I still do from time to time. Please let me know your thoughts on this massive step.

Also, I do enjoy a beer or two from time to time and was wondering if down the road from my surgery, I will be able to...gotta have a beer with tacos - one of my fav's! What are your experiences in foods, drinks, etc. that make you throw up??

Thanks and I wish everyone the very very best on this site. I have been larger since I was around 7 and feel invisible to the general population...I know you all know what I am talking about.

LeAnne
