Melissa,
It never ceases to amaze me just how many calories are in fast foods! Even
when you KNOW how bad they are, it still surprises!!
BTW, congrat's on your weight loss to date!

Faye,
I'm with you on the McDonald's. My kids LOVE to eat there, and most of
the time I'm not able/willing to resist, although I do *TRY* to get a
Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad(4pts plus dressing) and a Diet Coke. I
did try those Angus burgers, and while they were good, they are NOT
worth the points! It was on the FL vacation when I gained almost 7
lbs(mostly from TOM) so I didn't waste points again, but I won't do it
again. I used to eat a Double 1/4 Lber with Cheese Meal before joining
WW(2 years ago, yup haven't had one since!), and I looked it up one day
and the whole meal, with regular soda was *54* points! YIKES! Scary
thing is, I would eat those at LEAST once a week before WW! I don't
even want one anymore after looking up the points. If I want a burger
now, I get the Big N Tasty no cheese no mayo. It's still like 9
points, I think, but it's better than the other one. I also don't get
fries(or a small if I have the points) and I ALWAYS get a Diet Soda.
I'm also trying to get my kids to eat healthier, so we hardly go to
McDonald's anymore, plus with me not working all summer, $$$ was REALLY
tight, so I use the excuse that I don't have the money(job doesn't
start till 9/14). We do buy the frozen nuggets from the grocery store,
since you can get about 50 of those for the price of a 10 piece at
McD's! That's another way to save money.
I have gone, over the 2 years, from an 18/20 W to a 12/14. I also tell
myself before I think of really splurging to think about how big I was
and how embarassing it felt to not fit into 'normal' clothes. Works
about 75% of the time!
Have a great week.
Melissa

2a. Article: Is Exercise for Weight Loss Really Pointless?
Posted by: "LBCreations" lbcreations-designsbybabette@cox.net queen_babette99
Date: Sun Aug 30, 2009 2:03 pm ((PDT))
Hi All,
I found this article and thought it had some really good points and I was
glad to see it. I hope that people who read John Cloud's piece don't pay
too much attention ... exercise really is sooo important!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------
The idea that the way to lose weight is through diet and exercise is
ingrained in our society. But an article in last week's Time magazine
created a buzz in the blogosphere by questioning the value of the exercise
part of the weight-loss formula. Doctors who treat overweight and obese
patients were not pleased -- even if there was evidence to support the
claim.
"Yes, we have a magic drug for cholesterol, we have magic drugs for high
blood pressure, but we don't have a magic pill for weight," said Dr. Martha
Gulati, associate director of the Women's Heart Center at Northwestern
Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
"To bring out a public health message that we should not exercise? That's
absolutely the wrong message," Gulati said. The article, "Why Exercise
Won't Make You Thin" by John Cloud, argued that in the real world,
exercising vigorously may just increase a person's appetite and use up their
natural reserves of self-control. After a hard workout, it's just human
nature to eat back those calories with an extra treat, or burn fewer by
taking the elevator instead of the stairs, Cloud argued.
He pointed to a study published in February in the online journal PLoS One
to back up his claims. The study followed 411 women who were divided into
four exercise groups -- no exercise required, 72 minutes per week, 136
minutes per week and 194 minutes per week of monitored exercise.
Doctors found that at the end of the six-month study, the women who
exercised the most didn't lose as much weight as the researchers predicted.
The group with the moderate amount of exercise lost an average of 4.6 pounds
while the group with the most vigorous of exercise lost just 3.3 pounds,
though they had been predicted to lose an average of about 5 pounds.
"No matter how much exercise you do or don't do, your diet matters -- it's
extremely easy to eat back more calories than you burn," said Dr. David
Katz, "Good Morning America" medical contributor and director of the Yale
University of Prevention Research Center.
But Katz said the "ah ha, exercise is not good for weight loss" idea
troubles him and many other doctors who counsel people trying to lose
weight.
Is Weight All Americans Care About? - "What do people care about? Do they
simply care about their dress size or do they care about their health?" Katz
said. "If you care about your health, exercise is your best friend."
Katz pointed out that three behaviors -- not smoking, exercising and eating
right -- have "a massive influence on your medical destiny."
If people care only about losing weight, Katz quipped, "Why don't you just
infect yourself with cholera? It would work for weight loss." Katz and many
others who treat obesity agree exercise must not be ignored because of its
importance for overall health, even if it doesn't make as big of an impact
on the scale as people believe.
Exercise for Weight Loss or Weight Maintenance? - "The diet has the biggest
bang for the buck initially, but when it comes to weight maintenance, but
there's no doubt that exercise keeps it off," said Gerald Endress, a
clinical exercise physiologist and fitness director at the Duke Diet and
Fitness Center in Durham, N.C.
"I exercise so that I can eat more. I think a lot of us do exercise so we
can maintain our weight," he said.
Yet while Endress could see why excessive exercising may lead some people
into a tailspin of overeating to compensate for hunger, he has seen the
opposite in his fitness center every day. The people exercising there,
Endress said, always lose weight.
"If you look, shows like 'The Biggest Loser,' they're over exercising them
[the participants] tremendously and they're losing weight," Endress said.
Even if the people in Endress' fitness center didn't lose weight by
exercising, diet and nutrition experts point out that the gym-goers would
likely be losing fat and gaining muscle.
The Scale Is Not the Only Measure of Health - "It's one of those things
where everybody would like to believe that, people will say 'I don't lose
weight but I'm exercising,'" said Keith-Thomas Ayoob, director of the
nutrition clinic at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.
"I say, 'Are you losing inches?'" Ayoob said.
Ayoob and Katz pointed out that many people gain weight when they embark on
an exercise program because they are gaining muscle.
Katz recounted the story of a man who weighed 400 pounds when he first came
to him for a fitness regimen.
"He'd work hard and the loss of body fat was huge, but he'd step on the
scale and see no change," Katz said. "But if I am converting body fat into
muscle, that's spinning straw into gold."
Ayoob added that while exercise alone might not trim pounds as fast as diet
alone might, the mere change in lifestyle when someone adopts a workout
routine may lead to fewer calories ingested.
"What exercise also does in terms of weight loss -- it can make you more
sensitive to when you're hungry and when you're not," Ayoob said. "And it
does something else: It gets you out of the house; it gets you off the sofa
so you're not having the temptation of going back and forth between the
refrigerator."

I saw that article, and had some immediate reactions to it. First, it was an attractive cover story. I don't usually read newsmagazines and I picked that one right up and read the article right away. Masterful choice for a cover!
As I read, I kept wondering on what planet Cloud has been living on all his life (there's a pun in there somewhere). I don't know what person in their right mind thinks that exercise burns enough calories to make a dent in weight, unless you also change your dietary habits. Look, you're at the gym, on the fancy treadmill or stairstepper or elliptical or stationary bike. They all tell you how many calories you've burned. 50... 100... 500? Anyone can tell you how many calories are in a can of soda and a bag of chips. 250+, and that's if the chips are baked. So who can ever use one of those machines and think it's making up for a huge slice of chocolate layer cake, or a single Big Mac? It doesn't add up and never has. I don't know why Cloud didn't realize that until now. Is he THAT bad at simple arithmetic?
Exercise is sooooooo beneficial. When I've lost weight in previous attempts, every time I was somewhat successful I was exercising regularly. When I stopped exercising (and stopped being aware of what I ate), I gained weight. So if it's not "burning calories" that's important, it has to be something else. Personally, I think it is a combination of building lean muscle and reducing depression and anxiety. But when I've lost weight before, it's always required BOTH intake control and exercising. One or the other didn't cut it. Ever.
I don't know about wanting to eat more after exercise. Except for swimming, I find a good sweaty workout is an appetite depressant. Maybe I'm weird. (I could eat a banquet after swimming, that much is true.) Building muscle and boosting your metabolism, trimming up your "look" and relieving depression, increasing flexibility, cardiovascular health and respiratory capacity. What's not to love?
When I read the article in Time, I groaned. Some people will read this and say, "Studies show I shouldn't exercise." I think Time did such a disservice in pitching what could have been a great piece in such a sensational, misleading way. I expected better of them but I guess it's all about circulation and readership, not about journalistic integrity.

Dance shoes work the best for Zumba. Don't wear sneakers you are better off barefoot.

One more thing about Zumba....go to a class rather than doing it at home if
possible. You really feed (no pun intended) off the other people in the
class.

Brandie,
I see someone else sent you to the website, but Zumba is a latin dance
class that's become all the rage lately(the last year or so?) I just
took my first class at the Y on Saturday and plan to take it again
tomorrow night.

Nancy, you bettcha! I have been able to get off my BP meds and my hiatal hernia has all but disappeared! I can breathe again! I can bend over again without pain from it and feeling as if I were going to pass out. I don't have to attach myself to a blood pressure cuff each day. Life is good and getting better! You will find it too! Can't wait to read where you have knocked off those scripts. We will sure celebrate with you.

I have a lot of reasons to lose weight, but one of them is to cut back on the pills. I take 7 pills a day, and all but 3 or 4 of them may be unnecessary after I lose weight. The pills include a daily low-dose aspirin and a multivitamin, and those aren't going anywhere. But many of the health issues I have are related to the weight and I'd rather be healthy than a pill-popper.

Dittos here from me too - too many doctors just want to give their patients
medications for anything and everything, and sometimes the very best thing
you can do is exercise and eat right. Some foods can be stressors too!

Babette - In July, instead of diet pills, my doctor "prescribed" our local
hospital's Weight Loss Program when I was feeling there was no way you could
lose the weight on my own (I was hoping he'd give me pills). The program
costs $450 for a four month commitment. He wants to see me at the end of
October to see my progress. I made the appointment for the hospital
program, but they couldn't get me in for a month. In the mean time, I
decide that WW requires just as much a commitment and it was A LOT cheaper.
So, I started going back to WW AGAIN. decided to make the commitment to
THAT. Six weeks later, I'm 14 pounds lighter. I have 50 more pounds to go
and hoping by next summer I'll be almost there.
No matter which route you take, diet pills, WW or another route. The only
way it will work is if you make the commitment. Glad I didn't go with the
pills, it's just one more thing that you have to worry about what is really
going into your body. now they are coming out with possible health problems
with Alli. I think I'll just stick with learning how to eat right, it's a
lot cheaper and a lot healthier in the long run. Glad I have a doctor that
does not give into the medicated way of dieting.

Hi Kelley,
While I agree with you ... there is also the flip side to that equation. So
many patients go to their doctors demanding a "magic bullet". I have a
friend here who is 5 feet even, 350 pounds and harassed her doctor for 6
months for a diet pill. The doctor finally caved and gave it to her ... for
one month only. Since she's gotten the pill she's not changed her eating
one bit. I'm sure when she goes back and the doctor refuses her the next
prescription it's all going to be the doctor's fault that she doesn't lose
weight!

I agree with Lyn.
One thing most people don't understand is that supplements are not
tested nor regulated by the FDA. We think they are safe because a
drugstore sells them, but they may not be. Rarely have there been any
long term studies, and nothing remotely close to the testing that FDA
approval requires.
Exercise is my therapy and stress reliever as well.

I am playing the devils advocate here, not to b e rude but I think we have to support everyone, even those that are "playing" with weight loss. Can any of us honestly say that this is the first time we have lost weight or tried to lose weight or hit goal the first time? I have been at goal for about 4 years, but "played" at weight loss more times than I can count. We need to spread the enthusiasm to all because maybe then it will help them out to where they want to continue on their weight loss journey. Just my opinion

Spreading enthusiasm is what we want to do Kerri...... not sure what you are saying. Trying to be encouraging and enthusiastic is what we want to be. It's frustrating when we do and the ones that you are doing it to don't seem to be ready or get it. Again, and again.. not saying on here. Saying in life in general.
I have read from the owners, mods here that this group doesn't celebrate going off program. Hence the serious title. If I am wrong then I stand corrected and well........wrong. The enthusiasm includes suggestions on how to stay OP to be successful. And when we are, then of course we are enthusiastic in our celebrations with everyone that is! How does one "play" with weight loss?

I just saw that Kerri. And her explanation, I thought was a good one. And very common, sadly, with many that we wish we could help. I rode a train with a beautiful woman who prolly weighed all of 350 to 400 pounds. She ate from the time that she sat in that seat, two of them by the way, until I got off of the train 4 hours later. I'm serious! The entire time! While it was very disconcerting cause I hadn't been on WW for all that long and still struggling at times, I had to listen to her rattling package after package of yummy looking treats. But my biggest reaction? Wanting to go hug her and tell her that she is killing herself! So often we see people that are obese and seem so sad. I know, I was one of them. So when they are wanting to help themselves, it's wonderful and natural to support them and want the same for them. But when they consistently slip day after day, hour after hour, and blame everything or everyone but themselves it does get frustrating. I have a neighbor who does the same thing. She is vicious in her blame of something else that is causing her to keep gaining instead of losing when she is supposed to be OP. You want to help but after a while you want to shake them and yell......"it's not the reason!" That is what I meant and what I continue to mean. She is playing at weight loss all the while totally off the wagon and eating anything that she wants and blaming our wonderful leader for her failure. FRUSTRATING! At least she does weigh in..... but then disrupts because of her pouting about not losing enough or any.
I thought this was what Babette was saying and I still stand by my reply to her. Amen Sistah! It is sad and yes......frustrating.

The enthusiasm includes suggestions on how to stay OP to be successful. And when we are, then of course we are enthusiastic in our celebrations with everyone that is! How does one "play" with weight loss?

I am playing the devils advocate here, not to b e rude but I think we have to support everyone, even those that are "playing" with weight loss. Can any of us honestly say that this is the first time we have lost weight or tried to lose weight or hit goal the first time? I have been at goal for about 4 years, but "played" at weight loss more times than I can count. We need to spread the enthusiasm to all because maybe then it will help them out to where they want to continue on their weight loss journey. Just my opinion

Hey! I know you! LOL...
Welcome to SWW Babette. This is a terrific group that is "serious" about our
health and the WW program. They are a tremendous help to us to stay OP and
be successful with many successes as incentive. Enjoy your stay!

Hi there!
Just joined and thought I'd say "hi". I'm Babette, 45, and recently joined
WW's AGAIN on 7-25-09. My goal is 160 and I'm going to see the distance!
My start weight this time was 260 ... but my highest all time weight was
411. I'm currently at 252. I hope to get to know you all!
Hugs,
Babette

LOL, mine is thinking soup! It's cold here. It's never cold here in August. NEVER!
The egg rolls sound heaven! I can tolerate them baked. I make crab Rangoon baked, lol. It's different, but tasty and I loves my sweet crabmeat. I just add some Splenda to the mixture to make up for using the lower fat cream cheese.
Carol, you are so right. Portion control and planning and we can eat what we love. Or figure out a way to make it so it is OP. Just imagination and a lil more work and it's sooooooooo worth it!
PS: those cabbage rolls may be getting played in our house this week too, lol...

What about putting the recipes in the recipe builder? It is alot of work but once it is done you can get a point count..also save you points. We really can fit things into ww just not the portions we were use to. I am going to check out my honeys' favorite cabbage rolls and stuffed red peppers....We are having a heat wave here and Jack is thinking winter food...

I made my egg rolls yesterday for the first time since I have been on
Weight Watchers and there is a good reason for that. I make the
world's best egg rolls, and they are addictive. I think if you gave my
husband his choice of any of the food I make (which is extensive) egg
rolls would be his favorite.
The egg rolls themselves aren't too bad.lean ground beef, cabbage,
carrots, celery, bell peppers, bean sprouts.but then you fry them..my
daughter and I tried baking some, ala Hungry Girl recipe, but I
couldn't deal with them baked. So I added an extra two points to the
calculation I made for the egg roll (1 point for the ground beef,
which is minimal in each egg roll, and 1 point for the wrapper) for
the grease it was fried in. Still not too bad at four points a piece,
but I ate three of them, along with pepper steak and rice.
Do you all think the two extra points was about right for the added
grease? Too much? Too little?
I went over my daily points, but the first time this week (week starts
on Tuesdays) I dipped into my weekly points, so I'm OK.
I just know that egg rolls are going to have to be one of those
special meals I don't make often..because the leftover egg rolls are
calling me..so far I've ignored them!
The next special meal I make for my husband that I can't resist will
be German. He says if I will cook him one of these "special" meals
once a month, he won't say anything about all the broiled, grilled,
etc., foods we eat the rest of the time!!! I don't see too many places
I can trim down Jaegarschnitzel and spatzle..One of the reasons we
don't go to our favorite lunch place any more-it's German and there
isn't a darn thing on the menu that wouldn't take up over half of my
daily points!

boy, that is a good question Claudia. I am thinking it is gonna be a bit more than that. I'll see if I can find some items to compare and maybe go from there. Like instructions on the back of a box of an item that can be both baked or fried. I'll check the freezer and see if I have anything like that..BRB

I use the recipe builder a lot, but just don't know how to add the
fact that I deep fried the item. Do I add a teaspoon of oil, a
tablespoon of oil, what???
