You are so right about getting out of that mind set...I think it takes lots of practice to. I just got back from vaction 4 weeks on the road. I made alot of good food choices probably some not so great choices but I had a vacation to remember.  And Guess what my memories are of the wonderful sites and not the food.  I look forward to my meeting on thurs.  not with dread of what I might gain but of being home and ready to enjoy cooking again.

PS I went to one meeting in Pittsburgh half way thru my trip and gained .8.

"So that cake was the only thing I really did wrong".....are there
wrong foods with the Weight Watcher plan? I never knew that. Is there
a list or a go-by rule that can tell me the "wrong" foods?

I am so happy to be accepted, I have prayed for an answer to my problem for years. I am 48 and have spent much of my life morbid obese. I am hoping to gain the support I need to make the changes that need to be made. I cry as I type as I have come to such despair, I know this is right for me and I am ready. I read some encouraging posts and feel success is just beyond that hotdog....Thanks and SMiles Sherry

When I first started WW I made the mistake of thinking the best choice
for a breakfast at McDonald's was the sausage biscuit. Then I looked
over their nutrition info and realized how wrong that way. So this
morning, when we took my daughter to the airport for her vacation, my
husband wanted to stop at McDonald's. I chose the breakfast with the
least points-an Egg McMuffin. I used to like these, but the one I had
this morning was HORRIBLE!!!! Egg was overcooked with no salt (come
on-I need a little salt on my egg), the muffin was untoasted and
tasted several days old. Did I just get a bad Egg McMuffin, have they
changed so much in the years it has been since I had one, or have my
taste changed already?

Welcome to the group, it has been a great inspiration to me as well. Take things one day at a time, all the good intentions add up!
After 20+ years, I finally "got it".
Good luck to you, and post your success!

Patty

Claudia,

I have found the Egg McMuffins to be yucky too. The egg often tastes
rubbery. I'd rather have the WW Smart Ones version.

Dh and I ordered one last February (while vacationing with friends - they
wanted to stop there). It was gross and just plan inedible! I took one
bite, dh took two and then threw it away! Of course dh and I don't really
do fast food and haven't for well over a year so we may not be the best
judge.

Hi Faye,
I never EVER thought I'd be able to run for 5 min, never mind 3 miles! Keep walking, you'll get where you want to go!

4a. Question for Tory
Posted by: "CLAUDIA" clewing1953@sbcglobal.net clewing1953@sbcglobal.net
Date: Sun Aug 2, 2009 3:30 pm ((PDT))

I have been diagnosed with heel spurs. The doctor has not X-rayed, but
based on everything I've read about them, and the pain I've been
having, I believe it is a correct diagnosis.

Since Motrin wasn't working alone, he put me on the six day pack of
steroids. It helped, but since this was a decreasing dosage regimen,
by the fourth day, the pain was returning. Next (last Monday) I
received a steroid shot in the heel. It started helping, but then this
morning, I almost tripped and came down hard on that foot. I felt the
facia "pop" again, and now I am almost back where I started from.

The doctor suggested Crocs to wear around the house, but I have been
hesitant about them because I hate to spend that much money for a shoe
I hate (sorry, don't mean to offend anyone, but I don't like the way
they look-just my opinion) and only to wear around the house. I do
wear my good walking shoes when I go out of the house and I added a
pair of Dr. Scholl's inserts for facitis (sp) and heel spurs. I wear a
pair of well padded SAS sandals around the house, unless I'm in my
nightgown already, then I slip on a pair of padded flip-flops (I used
to be queen of barefoot before this). I have been icing it two-three
times a day.

I was just wondering if there were any suggestions you might have to
help this heel so I can start walking, both on the treadmill and with
my new puppy.

It is funny you mentin this because I was going to ask Tori if she ever has trouble with her feet. I have trouble with the balls of my feet and also my heels. On the balls, I get DEEP calluses and I have no idea what is wrong with my heels. They really hurt in the morning when I wake up and stand. It is interfering with my working out in the morning. Any suggestions would be great!!!

Thanks Kerri

I have been diagnosed with heel spurs. The doctor has not X-rayed, but
based on everything I've read about them, and the pain I've been
having, I believe it is a correct diagnosis.

Since Motrin wasn't working alone, he put me on the six day pack of
steroids. It helped, but since this was a decreasing dosage regimen,
by the fourth day, the pain was returning. Next (last Monday) I
received a steroid shot in the heel. It started helping, but then this
morning, I almost tripped and came down hard on that foot. I felt the

Claudia,

You can get crocks that aren't the real thing for $8 at Wal-Mart. That's
where I got mine and I love them! They are the most comfy shoes I ever
owned.

Heel spurs and plantar fasciaitis are the same thing, a tightness of the
fascia on the bottom of the foot. This website is the best:
http://heelspurs.com/_intro.html
I always tell my clients to ice ice ice ice! Do NOT go barefoot, your arch
needs support right now. This site suggests freezing a can of beans and
massaging under your foot with it. I always suggest a water bottle, but the
beans would be colder. (I'd be a little concerned about it rupturing, but it
probably wouldn't.)

Ice after EVERY activity you do on your feet. If it feels like you're icing
enough, you're not. If it feels like you're icing too much, you're probably
still not icing enough. Ice helps the body to heal.

For the deep calluses, it may be plantar warts. They get very deep cores. If
it is calluses (I get those and if they get too high, they will impact the
foot causing pain), just get corn pads and put them on them and let them
melt away the top layers. Then be very religious about using a pumice (I
like the really really fine pumice "sponges") a few times a week, even when
they're not bothering you. About once a year I have to get corn pads and
they literally work within a day or two, especially if I don't let them get
bad.

The Walmart Crocs aren't made of the same material, so won't provide the
same benefit that the real ones will. There are actually some VERY cute
Crocs that aren't the same as the clog type ones. You'd be amazed! Go to
crocs.com and check them out. I don't really like the way they look either,
although I do have some Mickey Mouse crocs I wear for fun sometimes. But the
new ones are quite cute! Not huge and clompy looking!

I had the same problem when I was 100 lbs heavier. It was very frustrating because I could not get any exercise in to help lose the weight. I was also about to take a trip to Greece, but my feet hurt sooooo bad. Crocs definetely worked well. I also found a insert that totally took away the pain. It is from a site called "Heel that pain." I was able to walk around Greece at my higher weight without the heel pain.

I echo what Tory has said - although I THINK that plantar fascitis nad heel spurs are two different things. Heel spurs are actually bony build-ups that are much less common than thoguht. But plantar fascitis - which I have had - is common enough that I know about 10 people that have had it.

My boss had it - not overweight but a endurance runner. A colleague, also not overweight but really fond of hanging out by the pool and mowing lawn barefoot. Myself, only about 20 pounds over goal at the time. Colleague's wife, about 50 pounds overweight but carrying twins at the time. And a friend, another runner.

What did we have in common? Alas, about the same age, early 50's, which is when fat pads start to thin, especially on the feet. the same aging that gives us nice cheekbones now also might cause bags udner the eyes and heel pain.

> the pain I've been
> having, I believe it is a correct diagnosis.
Could be - plantar fascitis is pretty distinctive -it's like you step on a pebble or sharp object when you get up - I kept looking for something I stepped on - and with time, it eases, usually within about five minutes. During the day, it might flare up, especially to a dull pain. It can cause gait changes - so I pronated to the outside of the foot and rolled inward to avoid the first pain on the heel.

My boss did get a steroid shot, which definitely works - a short working solution - he eventually had to have surgery because his WAS heel spurs caused by his six marathons a year.

> I felt the
> facia "pop" again, and now I am almost back where I started from.

I have to echo what Tory said - I iced once an hour for about 10 minutes - I did the frozen water bottle. And I NEVER EVER walked on that foot without a shoe on - I took a shoe off last thing when I got in the bed and put it on before I ever stepped out of the bed - if you get up at night for any reason, you put the shoe on.

I never got crocs - I just used regular shoes - well, good shoes, but ones that cradled and supported the outside of the heel. Each case is different, but ANY insert I tried made my pain worse. Something like you get a good shoe that supports and then you add something to it, so now instead of stepping right, you overcompensate - YMMV.

> I hate (sorry, don't mean to offend anyone, but I don't like the way
> they look-just my opinion) and only to wear around the house.

Then you may like my suggestion even worse - and of course you can look sylish around the house and limp if you like - or look less than stylish and have feet that don't hurt.

The one absolute best thing I ever did was get a night splint - when you sleep, your foot becomes more relaxed and shortens the fascia, so any healnig it does at night, when you're not on it, shortens the fascia, so when you put you're foot in a "walking position" - a 90 degree angle - it pulls that fascia and you have to start healing all over again with all the inflammation and pain.

I fashioned my own night splint out of a simple angle brace and gauze wrapping - it served two purposes - it allowed me to sleep with foot in proper position but it also ensured I never took a step without correct footwear. Within 3 days, I was definitely on the mend.

> I do
> wear my good walking shoes when I go out of the house

How do you know they're good walking shoes? have you had your gait evaluated professionally? That's how I found out I was walknig poorly even in my "good walking shoes". And that my inserts were making it worse. Shoes are made off a foot form that's particualr to a brand and style - you may well be wearing a good walking shoe made for a lower instep (or higher) but also a heel that's too wide.

> then I slip on a pair of padded flip-flops

I have been told that it's not the padding that's important - support around the heel area is also important, so you must wear reall shoes with a heel - something to do with putting pressure on tiny bones to tighten ligaments. So if you continue what you're doing, you're going to get ...

barbara
who hasn't had a heel problem in 5 years but has tales to tell about it
