Tory, this response from you put a huge smile on my face this morning. For "you" to call me an inspiration means so much. Thank you. I most certainly was enjoying life to it's fullest. After the journey so far it was one of the best vacations of my life. My family and myself will not forget it ever. I will be old, senile and rambling about it on and on, lol...thanks to everyone for helping me get here!
I did have a pretty good weigh in considering that I ate some very modest proportions of things that I haven't had for a while. Like onion rings... clam strips... crème' brulee'... mind you it was in proportions that were less than a serving..but I did it..*blush* And I lost .8! Almost a pound! That is 3 vacations that I have taken this summer and lost on all three! Mind you this one wasn't as large a loss as last time, but a loss just the same. Oh, and ice cream, lol, three times! I am so happy right now. I got an "atta girl" sticker at my meeting! I'm ready to hit another water slide, lol..
Thanks again,
Deb

THAT is what it's all about, Deb! Not fitting into a slinky dress, or a
bikini...but being healthy and confident enough to go out and ENJOY and LIVE
life!
Definitely testify! You are an inspiration!

Yes, they certainly are. At least in this house. If I didn't "plan" and have a variety of sweet treats for us (DH is also eating healthy since being diagnosed with Type2, and has knocked all of his numbers well below unhealthy levels) we wouldn't succeed at all. An eating plan the excludes this type of indulgence is gonna be a flop in our house. We have managed to remain OP almost entirely every day since January. It most assuredly is because of this feeling of not being denied anything. Just planning and portion control. So heck yeah it's "staples"!! Just as much as any other item considered a staple in your pantry.

At pur meeting yesterday we talked about the foods that helped us stay on plan....The change in plans over the year has given us all kinds of food that help us stay on. I personally love. Can you all help me come up with some other words instead of "junk food" for the foods that support my weight loss.

I really feel being able to plan in some "junk food" is one of the
reasons why this plan works for so many people, and will work for me.
Not only are there so many healthier alternatives out there now then
even 5 years ago (not to mention 35 years ago, the first time I was on
WW), but WW plans to let you overindulge each week and not feel guilty
with those extra points. It's a mental thing. In the past, you "blew"
your diet with a bowl of ice cream or piece of cake you would think
"What's the use, I am pond scum, I have no will-power, so I might as
well give up!" Now with those extra 35 points each week (and more if
you earn Activity Points) you don't have to beat yourself up mentally
if you have a weakness. Psychologically, that is a huge factor.
All this is my humble opinion, anyway!

Regarding the junk food. You can have it provided you plan for it. I
have Ice cream made with Splenda almost every day--2 points per 1/2
cup. I also buy a mixed bag of Baked Chips--pretzels, Ruffles,
Cheetos, Doritos---from WalMart. 2 or 3 points each. So I just count
them along with the rest of my points for the day.

I'm doing very well on Momentum. I'm not feeling hungry at all. I've walked about 4 times this week about 1 1/2 miles each time.
I'm looking forward to the sharing and support here.

Carol, what a lovely email.
When I started this group, it was with the intention that it would be a supportive place for people seriously working the program. I used to post a lot, and now, I hardly post at all. I do read every day, I do work behind the scenes keeping spammers at bay, approving members and messages, etc., but the group has taken a life of its own with wonderful members.
So while I feel like I'm on the edge of the group and not a full participant, it warmed my heart nonetheless to see this email!

I can identify with several of your challenges. Like ordering a salad and the lettuce was awful, I orderd a turkey sandwich with bean sprouts no mayo....sounded good the bean sprouts were from a can....Yuck....tossed the sprouts enjoyed the turkey. but it shows how easy it could have been for me to order something else not on plan...
On this last trip I packed almonds in all kins of favors....8 to a baggie...2 pts. I ate them S L O W L Y and they helped me when my blood sugar was low.

Hello,
I went out of town to fulfill a service commitment. A number of things made it difficult. Some food related, some health related & some simply weight related. Now I would like to participate in a retreat that is coming up with many women who have some interests similar to mine.
I have been examining what made the trip out of town so difficult for me so as to become more adaptive in the future. I thought if I mentioned some of the difficulties I had, some of you might already have solved this in your life.
The big change is that I am feeling better physically. This is the best
I have felt since I had lymphoma 5 years ago. So I am rejoining the
world of the living and am much more actively involved in my life.
I remain morbidly obese and my weight loss is slow and even unsteady while I am on this journey.
I will be 64 this month and find that I am not anywhere near as adaptive as I was at younger ages.
As near as I can see, here are the difficulties I had:
1. Making certain I have my proper snacks so as to keep my erratic blood sugar under control.
2. No fridge or microwave available to bring my own stuff.
3. Food choices that did not include plan friendly vegetarian foods.
4. Food choices that were not appealing and didn't taste all that good either leaving me disappointed and unsatisfied.
5. Unavoidable walking that was too much for my still heavy body leaving me with a painfully swollen leg and foot.
6. General out of sorts feelings from being away from home, out of my own routine and unable to care for myself in the same ways as usually.
I really look forward to hearing your experiences, knowledge and weight loss strategies.

Yesterday, I went downstate for the day to visit my daughter-in-law who is
expecting our first grandchild. She has been thru quite an ordeal during
this pregnancy (surgery at 20 weeks to remove a 4.5 inch fibroid tumor).
Now that all is well and all the answers are in (benign) we are looking
forward to the fun ahead. So after doing some shopping at Babies R Us, I
asked her where she wanted to go for lunch (in case she had cravings!). She
couldn't really think of a place that she "had" to go to, so I relayed to
her that I was in my 4th week of WW (and doing very well) and would like a
good salad! She pointed to the building right next to us and it was
Applebees! So we were both able to go in and have a healthy lunch. I had a
great salad and it was only 5 POINTS! I love that Applebees puts WW points
next to some of their menu items. It was a no brainer and I had a
wonderful lunch with my wonderful daughter-in-law!

I can identify with several of your challenges. Like ordering a salad and
the lettuce was awful, I orderd a turkey sandwich with bean sprouts no
mayo....sounded good the bean sprouts were from a can....Yuck....tossed the
sprouts enjoyed the turkey. but it shows how easy it could have been for me
to order something else not on plan...
On this last trip I packed almonds in all kins of favors....8 to a
baggie...2 pts. I ate them S L O W L Y and they helped me when my blood
sugar was low.

Hello,
I went out of town to fulfill a service commitment. A number of things made
it difficult. Some food related, some health related & some simply weight
related. Now I would like to participate in a retreat that is coming up with
many women who have some interests similar to mine.
I have been examining what made the trip out of town so difficult for me so
as to become more adaptive in the future. I thought if I mentioned some of
the difficulties I had, some of you might already have solved this in your
life.
The big change is that I am feeling better physically. This is the best
I have felt since I had lymphoma 5 years ago. So I am rejoining the
world of the living and am much more actively involved in my life.
I remain morbidly obese and my weight loss is slow and even unsteady while I
am on this journey.
I will be 64 this month and find that I am not anywhere near as adaptive as
I was at younger ages.
As near as I can see, here are the difficulties I had:
1. Making certain I have my proper snacks so as to keep my erratic blood
sugar under control.
2. No fridge or microwave available to bring my own stuff.
3. Food choices that did not include plan friendly vegetarian foods.
4. Food choices that were not appealing and didn't taste all that good
either leaving me disappointed and unsatisfied.
5. Unavoidable walking that was too much for my still heavy body leaving me
with a painfully swollen leg and foot.
6. General out of sorts feelings from being away from home, out of my own
routine and unable to care for myself in the same ways as usually.
I really look forward to hearing your experiences, knowledge and weight loss
strategies.
Laura

Thank you, Deb! I AM determined this time. Too many cute clothes in my skinny closet! I normally wear a 2X or sometimes a 3X, but yesterday, I put on an XL t-shirt and it fit me! I had to kinda stretch it out just a bit, but it looked good on me, it was pretty with embroidered flowers on it, and several of my friends saw me in it and said how pretty I looked yesterday! That was sure an upper! I've had my waist-length hair cut off short, in a more modern style, with the ends flipped out here and there, and pushed behind my ears, and it looks cute - and all my friends say I look so up-to-date, rather than that long hair I had. I love the new look, though it takes some styling, not much, but some. So I am updating my look. I am beginning to realize that I was dressing frumpy and my hair was frumpy - it was thinning due to age and medication I am on, plus tangles that just got pulled out, and so it wasn't a glorious thing of long hair - it was stringy looking. Now with the short hair, it looks thicker (I use a volumizer on it), and with more cute clothes, I am feeling good. All of that is motivation. But it started with the haircut. And I donated my hair to the Cancer Society, so that felt good to do. Some child will get a baseball cap with a ponytail attached of my hair. My hubbie looks at me and smiles and says I look so cute with my short hair, which he never expected. I am looking forward to doing a little bit of shopping for some smaller clothes, not too many, because I still have a lot of weight to lose, but when my jeans are sliding off of me, time to get new jeans! LOL !!!!! This time, at WW, I WILL succeed. I am determined to take it off and keep it off, and am developing habits that will help me do that. There is one lady at my meetings who has reached goal and is now going through that 6-week process of figuring out how many points she can have a day and keep her weight steady. Right now they have determined that she can eat 18 points per day (she is short and petite and an older woman). So I tried something for a few days. I tried what it would be like to be on a 20 point diet for a day, in case that is what mine comes down to, and it wasn't that hard, but boy you do have to watch everything, and plan ahead for dinner before you eat breakfast. I'm starting to add the exercise in daily with walking in the morning. Building up how far I walk a little more each week.
So, I look forward to knowing you too, Deb, and celebrating with you also!
Annie

Annie,
Congrats on the much smaller top and the short haircut! My DH swears I
look better in short hair(currently it's about 1" below my shoulders),
but I have always hated short hair(my mom MADE me keep it short till I
was 18!). It's sure cooler in the summer, so I may relent for the rest
of the summer, but it takes forever to grow in and I don't want the
opposite reaction in the winter! I think it's great that you donate it
to the Cancer Societ, my hair isn't long enough to do that(I think it
has to be 12"??) THat's a great gesture.
Btw, your daily points WILL go down as you enter new decades of weight,
so don't be surprised when you get less. I think I was at 27 when I
first joined WW and I'm now at 22, although I'm mostly following Simply
Filling at the moment(I switched for vacation and am switching again
for next week at my mom's).
Have a great weekend and a great week, I will be MIA for all week from
tonight until the 16th.

lots of good information on products especially - I took advantage of
the Vitalicious muffin offer a while ago and love their products...
hard to believe that the vitatops are just 1 point and so chocolate-
y..... and still frozen with a little bit of peanut butter, can't be
beat for dessert.... thanks again, Mary Lou

13a. Thanks for helpful strategies!

Thanks to everyone for your great suggestions. Especially from
Mary, toddlermomof2 & Carol.
One of the things I love about WW today is how we
are able to tailor our eating patterns to our individual needs and lifestyle.
With this in mind, I do agree with Mary when she wrote: "Making your routine and self-care portable are key, if you
are to profit from an away from home experience."
At almost 64, it surprises me to see that I have been
dieting since I was 23 and I still do not know what I, Laura, will need under
those circumstances. I think this is due to spending all those years attempting
to force my round being into whatever square diet plan I was attempting that
moment. I never asked myself these questions before.
I am not able to use the products made for diabetics as they
are full of sugar, great for a diabetic insulin reaction but terrible for a
non-diabetic hypoglycemic episode. I just recently, with the help of my
husband, came up with my first ever successful hypoglycemia management plan
while trying to lose weight. I use some of my points for a protein type drink
that I split into 4 servings for the day.
You also asked: "What exercise is your mainstay now? How will you replace it if
that is not available where you are headed?"
This is a difficult aspect of my ww plan. I am morbidly obese and very
de-conditioned due to both my weight and the long term impact of the extensive
chemo I had for lymphoma.
Since I have been feeling better now on WW, I have increased
my activity level: going more places and doing more fun things. This has meant
more walking to and from activities. I pay for these with a swollen foot, leg
and ankle....none of which I have been able to obtain help for. I guess I just
have to stick with it until I lose enough weight for this to not happen.
In addition to this, I am riding my recumbent bike, doing
stretches, and some of the exercises from this old exercise book I used in the
past (The Canadian Air Force Exercises).
While at the retreat, I suspect I will need to use good
judgment and accept any rebound consequences from activity there.
I called the retreat coordinator and asked about the food
and available refrigerator. The food is planned to be healthy and with options.
As she listed the menus, I can feel relieved to know that the food will support
my WW lifestyle. Even the snacks are WW friendly such as fruit and popcorn. I
will just need to stay away from the granola bars. There will be one dessert
planned for the Saturday nite and I see that I can plan to have a small amount
and not feel deprived.
I can make my protein drink for the 2 days and keep it in a
big jar in the fridge with my name on it.
Laura
I do have that PB2 and that is an excellent idea. I like it
with carrot sticks! But rice cakes or Wasa Crackers are a good idea too.
I am not that fond of jello as it is not a vegetarian food.
Toddlermom of 2, you described my dilemma completely
accurately. I have always had unrealistic plans of dieting...rather than living.
I´ve been re-reading (over and over) book 5, eat out and on
the run, to see what ideas I could get.
Carol, that idea of wrapping whatever in individual bags is
one that does work for me. I do like the idea of wrapping almonds or whatever
into portion sized bags. When I make corn bread or any dessert type food, I now
make them in muffin pans and freeze all but the serving for that day. It seems
to really work for me.

Laura,
Glad to hear that our responses were helpful to you, and your responses
were helpful to me as well.
At almost 64, it surprises me to see that I have been
dieting since I was 23 and I still do not know what I, Laura, will need
under
those circumstances. I think this is due to spending all those years
attempting
to force my round being into whatever square diet plan I was attempting
that
moment. I never asked myself these questions before.
I, too, have been on many diets, over the years, although I'm only 35.
I've been overweight since the age of 12(thanks to puberty) and am
currently weighing less than I have all of my adult life(maybe 8th
grade??? I don't know what I weighed then, but I was *ALWAYS* teased
for being overweight in grade/high school). I still would like to lose
40-50 more lbs, but I sure feel a WHOLE lot better than I have in MANY
years. The diets I have tried over the years were: Slimfast(never
could stick with it, drinks were nasty, bars/meals were NOT filling AT
ALL and too expensive!), Ediets(worked, but too expensive and too
restrictive), Atkins(WAY too restrictive) and now Weight Watchers.
I've been on Weight Watchers for over 2 years, and while I was hoping
to be at goal by now, I am thankful every day for the changes I've seen
in myself, physical and emotional. For instance, I can run for 5-10
minutes straight now, I could NEVER do that
before I started WW,
couldn't even run the 1 mile required in HS(already about 160-180 lbs).
Until this summer when I stopped going to the gym, I could actually
run 3.1 miles straight. Now it's harder since I'm out of practice, but
I WILL get back to that point. I played sports in HS and college but
was always the slowest and worst player due to my weight. I'm actually
planning to join a volleyball league with my daughter this fall! YAY!!!
I just recently, with the help of my
husband, came up with my first ever successful hypoglycemia management
plan
while trying to lose weight. I use some of my points for a protein type
drink
that I split into 4 servings for the day.
Good for you and DH that you were able to come up with a plan to manage
your hypoglycemia. That's awesome that he's been willing/able to help
you. Using your points to maintain your sugar is a wise use of points.
I'm sure your dr would agree. Have you discussed WW with him/her? I
think that would be a good idea. My aunt is a diabetic(diagnosed at
65) and follows WW to help control her weight and it has helped control
her blood sugar some as well. Her dr is happy for sure!
In addition to this, I am riding my recumbent bike, doing
stretches, and some of the exercises from this old exercise book I used
in the
past (The Canadian Air Force Exercises).
The recumbant bike should definitely help as well as the stretches.
Any activity is better than NO activity! I used a machine I never used
before at the Y today, it was just like the machine that Chuck Norris(I
think it's him, maybe not) talks about on tv, the one that combines
the stair stepper motion with an elliptical machine. OUCH! My legs
are REALLY sore after just 30 minutes! I burned 270 calories doing 30
minutes, so that was good. I also did 35 mins on the treadmill and
burned another 130(mostly walking because of the sore legs due to the
other machine), so that was pretty good for 1 hour! Can you do water
aerobics at all? I know the Y I'm a member of has water aerobics 2-3x
a week and I plan to try that as well as Zumba soon. I've wanted to do
Zumba since I was in MD(just moved to DE a month ago) but the old gym I
was at charged extra whereas the Y it's included(YEAH!!!)
While at the retreat, I suspect I will need to use good
judgment and accept any rebound consequences from activity there.
Just do the best you can at the retreat and don't overdo and hurt
yourself more. It's great that they are providing healthy food instead
of cheap, convenient junk food that most companies provide! Granola
bars are not all bad, just have to watch how much you eat of them.
That's the joy of WW, you can have some dessert and not feel
deprived
as long as you have the points!
I do have that PB2 and that is an excellent idea. I like it
with carrot sticks! But rice cakes or Wasa Crackers are a good idea too.
I didn't care for PB2, didn't taste enough like the real thing to make
it worth it to me(I bought it off Ebay a year ago and threw it out,
didn't want to try and finish it!) I guess it's good that you like it
and can use it for a low point healthy snack.
Well, I gotta go finish the last minute stuff to get ready to go to my
Mom's for the week tomorrow. I will hopefully be going digest only(if
it works this time) and will check back in a week from Sunday!
Have a great weekend/week everyone.
Melissa
