I am new to the group so I want to say hello. I finally got my surgery date yesterday. I am very nervous and excited. I am sure I have a lot of guestions but cant think of them all right now except what kind and where do you buy the protine shakes needed after the surgery? Did anyone have any special tricks to make them taste better?

Also, what can I expect after surgery. Mine is on a monday and I am planning on going back to work that following monday? Is this realistic? I own a day care with assistance so I can take it easy if needed and relay on others to lift the children and so on. Just wondering what others did...

Thanks and looking forward to getting to know you all,
Kim

Depending on what type of surgery you are having will depend on your recovery time.  What type of surgery are you having?

My surgeon's practice did lots of nutritional counseling, but never
recommended protein shakes so I didn't use them early on (had my
laparoscopic RNY in December 08). I did begin using them, however,
after about 3 months out -- found them handy for travel and for those
situations (like visiting relatives) where what to eat/what not to
eat could be problematic.

I'm lactose-intolerant (and some post-ops become lactose-intolerant)
so I seek out shakes with a soy base (some milk protein's OK for me,
but I look for it way down on the ingredients list). These are the
ones I like:

Slim-Fast Low-Carb Vanilla Cream (very cheap on Amazon, with free
shipping) (chocolate flavor is more expensive). Watch Slim-Fast
products for sugar, esp. if you're trying to break a sugar addiction.

EAS Carb Control, chocolate -- most enjoyable of the lot I've tried.
But at WalMart.

Can't stand "Muscle Milk Lite." Aaaarrrggghhh!

Depends on whether you have an "open" (tradional procedure with an
incision) or laparoscopic one. I think I could have gone back to work
after a week, but with a nap mid-day. Any surgery -- any anesthesia
-- can leave you weary. For me, that didn't happen in the first week,
but sometime thereafter (don't recall exactly when). Just follow your
surgeon's orders down to the last iota and you should be fine.

I am on the pre protein thing now. I bought unflavored protein powder at
GNC and mix it in Instant Breakfast INo surgar) I think it tastes great.
It works for me. I hated the protein drinks.

I think everyone is different. I had RNY and was ready to go back the day after. But, with the train tube, he made me stay out for 2 weeks only because I work in a coal trucking industry and it was too dirty for me.... too much of a chance for infection. I would think that it would really be up to you as long as you are getting the rest you need.

Congrats on your surgery date!!!! Be sure to update us ASAP when you have it ;)

Kelly

Hi Kim! I had my surgery one week ago yesterday! I also have a daycare with assistance. What a coincidence! Did your doctor require you loose weight before surgery? My starting weight was 232 I went into surgery 221. My first post-op appt. is tomorrow, I'm anxious to see the results. The protein shakes that a friend of mine recommended to me that I really like is called Syntax Nectar Chocolate Truffle. You can order it at Drugstore.com not a bad price. Each shake fits my doctors requirements and it has 22 grams of protein per shake. This is a plus because I need at least 60 grams of protein a day, so 3 shakes a day and I have already hit 60 grams. I had my surgery on a Tuesday so I remained open that week that I was in the hospital and had my staff run the program. I got home on Friday night and closed the daycare for the following week. I will open again on Monday and will have assistance with the lifting. Let me know if you need any more info. Sara

I'm confused, Cheeks. It sounds like you are concerned about experiencing very low blood sugar post-op and are worried what you can do about that -- presumably because you plan to get the RNY and are worried about dumping?

But you also said that the surgeons plan to remove much of your stomach.

Have you considered having the duodenal switch instead of the RNY? With the DS, they remove most of your stomach, but they leave your pyloric valve intact. This means no dumping syndrome, and you could eat a sweet as necessary for your diabetes. (The DS also seems to cure diabetes in pretty much everyone who has it.)

Sorry about the confusion. I am concerned about treating the low blood
sugar post op. I am having the RNY procedure. We talked about the DS but
it was decided that it was too risky. I can't give you all the details
because I'm not sure how to put it. The only reason they are removing the rest
of my stomach is because it is felt that if it stays in I will continue to
have pain etc. I am not worried about dumping.......I figure as long as I
follow their instructions I will be fine. I have rather complex medical
issues. Most of these problems are do to the diabetes.

3. Considering surgery questions
Posted by: "Cloudwriter40@aol.com" Cloudwriter40@aol.com cloudwriter40

Hi,
My doctor would like me to have weight loss surgery and is referring me to
the bariatric surgeon next month. I am 5'2" and weigh 230. I've been
working with a nutritionist for 2 years and have lost 24 pounds in that time but
have been stuck for more than 6 months and I am frustrated. I am on meds
for HBP and low thyroid and I was just diagnosed with type II diabetes and
she wants to put me on meds for that too. And I am 48 years old and don't
want more meds.

I am a widowed single mom of 3 daughters, 20, 18 and 16 and they don't want
me to have surgery for fear something will happen to me. And I understand
that as I am scared as well.

So here are my questions:

Has anyone had surgery with adverse after affects?

Is it true you can't eat more than a tablespoon of food for awhile?

And only protein shakes for how long?

Can you never eat anything with sugar or fat in it?

How bad is the skin afterwards?

Is it possible though exercise NOT to have all that excess skin issue?

Thanks a lot!!
Dottie
