Subject: [After Weight Loss Surgery] Hi everybody
I'm a new member, and wanted to introduce myself. My name is Lori, I live in MA, am 45, and just had a lap gastric bypass on April 22nd. It's the best decision I ever made!!! I'm down 47 pounds, and already feel so much better. I have a great hubby (just had our 21st anniversary in May), and 2 kids, who are 5 and 7, so I had a lot to live for, and wanted to be here for a long time!!!! Am anxious to learn from you all, esp. ideas for meals...I have an awful time with the first meal of the day, can't get the shakes in without it taking at least 90 minutes, and just have no desire to consume ANYTHING in the am. Look forward to getting to know you all!!!!

Hi John,
Sorry to hear your wife is having problems with iron deficiency. The RNY definitely plays a big role in that.
I had the duodenal switch, which also poses similar iron deficiency problems. The way we DS'ers deal with the iron is by taking Polysaccharide Iron (called "Poly-Iron"), two capsules of 150mg each, daily. (Here is a link to the box of iron: http://www.americarx.com/Products/36107.html) This tends to lift our iron to sustainable levels. Many need infusions to get back on the right track, but taking the polysaccharide iron, two a day, should keep one on the right track. NOTE: It's important for iron absorption that your wife NOT take calcium within 2 hours of taking the iron. (The calcium will interfere with the iron absorption.)
Best of luck!
Julie

The Dr's are saying that she can't take a pill or eat foods high in iron because her body won't absorb it at all.

I know where you are coming from.
I chose the the lap band cuz I didn't want a quick fix and then go back to being fat so I am still just fat and have not lost much weight except for the 4o lb I lost in the beginning when I first got the surgery.
Being an addict I realize I have issues with food and I just want to learn how to eat better and want to eat that way so I don't get fat again. I have been doing research on different ways to control my eating I've decided to cut down on bread intake and I am starting to eat gluten free foods I am realizing that most foods have gluten so this is a tough to do. well I haven lost much from this change over but I feel better. Another thing, I got a colon cleansing they said I had a lot of yeast in my intestines so they gave me a combination of good bacteria and told me to eat a lot of yogurt they say that yeast thrives off of sweets and i may get craving from that growing in my body. My natural path Dr said that more and more diabetics are gluten intolerant and are finding that they are better off with a gluten free diet.
Anyways its a daily effort for me to stay on tract regardless of my lap band it is not a quick fix and I know it is still up to me to make an effort every day to want to take care of my self.
Love you all thanks PEACE always
Josie

Perhaps you could try the 5 day pouch diet test or change everything over
to sugar free. The 5 day pouch URL was posted a week ago. The compulsion to
over eat is a strong one because the natural desire to eat is strong. I watch
my son who is very fit and thin and watch the way that he eats. He eats
until his stomach is full and then he just walks away from the table. I try and
do the same thing.
good luck,
peace Lee
I am almost 3 years post-op, my problem is that I am a a stand still. I
have craving for sweets. Help I want to continue on journey successfully. I
fell of the wagon, and is having a difficult time trying to get back on track.

5a. New(ish) Member Introduction
Posted by: "g.dailey@comcast.net" g.dailey@comcast.net gpie3
Date: Wed Jun 10, 2009 7:25 am ((PDT))
I would like to introduce myself to the group. I have been a member for about six months now and have been reading posts.
I'm George Dailey, I had R-n-Y 01/19/04. At that time, I was a member of the Saint's Memorial Surgical Weight Loss program.
The program has now moved under the Lowell General Hospital's banner. I am 46, married with two middle school aged children.
Having been overweight all of my life, I wanted to do something for myself. My parents were both "normal" size but dad's side
had a history of heart problems. I lost my dad when he was 52 and my uncle at 46. Being from the Boston area and having the world's
best hospitals at my disposal, at 38, I found a cardiologist to keep track of my heart. After the results of my stress test, he said that my heart was
strong, but that my weight, at 320 lbs. on a 5'8" frame, was a cause for concern. I have had my share of other health issues as well.
I was hypertensive, diabetic, my back and knees ached and broke a sweat just thinking about exercise.
A few years had passed since my cardiologist visit, and I was getting heavier. Throughout my adult life, I had tried all of the diets. Nutrisystem,
Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, I knew them all. Although they did work and I did loose quite a bit of weight, I would end up putting on more than I lost.
So I went to an informational meeting @ Saint's on September 19 2003, had all of my tests applied for insurance and had my surgery exactly 4 months later.
I lost all of my weight in the first four months and blew by my goal of 180 (a goal that I thought was unrealistic when I set it) by 25 lbs.
I owe it all to the support and friendships that were built out of the WLS program at Saint's/Lowell General.
So after five plus years, I'm fluctuating around my original goal weight and feeling good.
Still keeping the faith,
George Dailey

rest of us. You followed the rules, stuck to the plan, and succeeded.
There's a powerful lesson in that for all of us. Thank you!

George, thank you for your inspirational testimony. I had my RNY almost two years ago - 7-2-07, I have reached my goal weight - and have maintained -125# pound loss since last summer. However, testimony such as yours certainly does help. I constantly worry that I will start gaining like all the other times that I had lost weight. Thank you for sharing your story!
